SO, FOR ANYONE WHO, UH, WAS EXPECTING 12 PUBLIC HEARINGS TODAY, UM, WE ONLY HAVE TWO, SO I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW. SO, UM, THE FIRST, UH, AMENDMENT THAT WE'RE GONNA GO THROUGH IS THE, UM, AMENDMENT TO OUR MAJOR SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS PERTAINING TO OPEN SPACE AND PATHWAYS. AND SO, UM, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON AN LMO AMENDMENTS PROJECT FOR SOME TIME. IT IS A PRIORITY PROJECT WITHIN OUR STRATEGIC ACTION PLAN OF, AND IT'S PART OF OUR GROWTH MANAGEMENT STRATEGY, OF WHICH A LAND MANAGEMENT ORDINANCE, A AMEND AMENDMENTS PROJECT HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED. UM, WE HAVE TALKED TO YOU BEFORE THAT THAT AMENDMENT PROJECT IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEPARATE PIECES, THE FULL CODE AMENDMENT AND THESE PRIORITY AMENDMENTS. UM, THE PRIORITY AMENDMENTS WERE IDENTIFIED TO INCLUDE INCREMENTAL CHANGES THAT ARE I TWO IMPORTANT, UM, AND URGENT THAT THEY CANNOT WAIT FOR THE FULL LMO OVERHAUL. UM, THESE PRIORITY AMENDMENTS AIM TO ADDRESS PRESSING COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ISSUES WITH THE BEST SHORT-TERM SOLUTION WHILE MINIMIZING UNINTENDED OUTCOMES. UM, ANY ISSUES THAT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL ANALYSIS AND RESEARCH THAT ARE MORE COMPLEX HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED TO BE FURTHER EXPLORED WITHIN THE FULL LMO OVERHAUL. UM, WHEN WE MET TO REVIEW THESE AMENDMENTS WITH YOU ALL IN JANUARY, UM, WE WENT THROUGH THE PAST AMENDMENTS AS PART OF THE LMO AMENDMENT PROJECT THAT HAVE BEEN ADOPTED TO DATE. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF AMENDMENTS, UH, IN MARCH OF 2023 THAT ARE IDENTIFIED HERE. UM, AND THEN THERE ALSO WAS AN AMENDMENT TO, UM, OUR FOREST BEACH, UH, NEIGHBORHOOD CHARACTER OVERLAY DISTRICT FLOOR AREA RATIO [00:05:01] REQUIREMENTS IN 2024. UM, AND THEN IS THIS PRO PROCESS ROLLED ON, WE REVIEWED A SET OF 10 PRIORITY AMENDMENTS, UH, WITH TOWN COUNCIL AT A WORKSHOP IN SEPTEMBER OF LAST YEAR. UM, ON THESE TOPICS THAT WE REVIEWED WITH THE PLANNING COMMISSION, UM, IN JANUARY, UH, BEFORE US TODAY ARE THE SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS, THE MAJOR SUBDIVISION AND DEVELOPMENT PLAN REVIEW PROCESSES, AND THE COMMON OPEN SPACE. WE BLENDED TOGETHER ITEM NUMBER THREE AND ITEM NUMBER SEVEN IN ONE AMENDMENT SET. THAT'S THE FIRST ONE THAT I'M GONNA GO OVER. UM, AND THEN THE SECOND AGENDA ITEM WILL COVER THE NUMBER FIVE HERE, MAJOR SUBDIVISION AND DEVELOPMENT PLAN REVIEW PROCESS. SO, UM, THESE STAFF REPORTS COVER A SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS, AND THEN A TABLE THAT WALKS YOU THROUGH THE AMENDMENT. IT HOPEFULLY WILL ALLEVIATE THE NEED TO, UM, GO BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN THE STAFF REPORT AND THE ACTUAL AMENDMENT. UM, AND WE TRIED TO DO THAT AND ARE TRYING TO ALIGN THOSE WITH ALL OF THESE AMENDMENTS COMING FORWARD FOR EASE OF REVIEW OF THESE PROPOSED AMENDMENTS. UM, SO THE UPDATES TO THE SUBDIVISION REQUIREMENTS ARE DRIVEN BY SOME PUBLIC CONCERNS FROM RECENT DEVELOPMENTS THAT, UM, WE'VE HEARD THAT THEY'RE OUT OF ALIGNMENT WITH DESIRED COMMUNITY STANDARDS, UM, SUCH AS EXCESSIVE TREE CLEARING, OVERLY LINEAR LAYOUTS, UM, ARCHITECTURAL MONOTONY WITHIN SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENTS IN ADEQUATE OPEN SPACE AND CONNECTIVITY. UM, AND THOSE HAVE LED TO SOME CONCERNS THAT OUR CURRENT REGULATIONS ARE NOT PROVIDING THE DESIRED OUTCOMES THAT OUR COMMUNITY DESIRES. UM, OUR SUBDIVISION REGULATIONS CURRENTLY WITHIN THE LAND MANAGEMENT ORDINANCE ARE SCATTERED ACROSS MULTIPLE SECTIONS, UM, THAT MAKES CHANGING OUR SUBDIVISION REQUIREMENTS OR THOSE REQUIREMENTS THAT AFFECT GOOD SUBDIVISION DESIGN AND OUTCOMES A LITTLE BIT MORE COMPLEX WITHIN OUR EXISTING REGULATORY FRAMEWORK. SO, UM, SOME OF, UH, DUE TO THAT NATURE WE'RE, UM, PROPOSING TODAY IN THE PRIORITY AMENDMENT SET SOME LIMITED IMPROVEMENTS TO SUBDIVISIONS, UM, BUT MOST OF THE FULL OVERHAUL OF SUBDIVISION REQUIREMENTS WILL BE HANDLED IN THAT FULL LMO OVERHAUL. UM, TODAY WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THESE TWO BULLETS HERE, IMPROVING OUR COMMON OPEN SPACE REGULATIONS WITHIN, UH, MAJOR SUBDIVISIONS AND ENHANCING OUR PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST CONNECTIVITY WITHIN SUBDIVISIONS. CURRENT REGULATIONS, UM, APPLY CURRENTLY. THEY ALLOW POORLY PLANNED OR UNDER UNDERUTILIZED COMMON OPEN SPACES. UM, THE CHANGES THAT ARE PROPOSED AIM TO BALANCE THE NEED FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE CREATION OF SPACES THAT ARE ACCESSIBLE AND CONNECTED AND ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WHILE PRESERVING THE UNIQUE CHARACTER OF HILTON HEAD. UM, ALSO, OUR CURRENT REGULATIONS DO NOT MANDATE PATHWAYS OR CONNECTIVITY TO EXISTING TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS. AND THIS AMENDMENT SEEKS TO RECTIFY THAT GAP, ENSURING SAFER, MORE ACCESSIBLE CONNECTIONS FOR PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS IN NEW DEVELOPMENTS. LIKE I SAID, WE DID REVIEW THESE AMENDMENTS WITH COUNCIL AT A WORKSHOP IN SEPTEMBER. WE IDENTIFIED SOME OF THE INPUT THAT WE HEARD DURING THAT REVIEW. UM, SUBDIVISIONS NEED MORE INTENTIONAL AND WELL-DESIGNED OPEN SPACE REGULATIONS NEED TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE ENVIRONMENT, CELEBRATE TREES AND VIEW SHEDS, UM, CONNECTION OF COMMON OPEN SPACE TREE PROTECTION LOT COVERAGE ARE IMPORTANT STEPS TO PRESERVE THE CHARACTER OF OUR ISLAND AND DEVELOPMENT. UM, AND ADDITIONAL, UM, FEEDBACK AND COMMENTS THAT, THAT YOU CAN SEE ON THE SCREEN. WE REVIEWED, UM, THIS SET WITH THE PLANNING COMMISSION IN JANUARY. WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, UM, FROM THE PLANNING COMMISSION AT THAT TIME ON THIS PARTICULAR, UH, SET OF AMENDMENTS. THE APPLICABILITY OF THESE CODE CHANGES, UM, FOR COMMON OPEN SPACE AND PATHWAY CONNECTIVITY APPLY ONLY TO MAJOR RESIDENTIAL SUBDIVISIONS OUTSIDE OUR PD ONE AREAS, UM, THAT ARE PLATTED. AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS ORDINANCE, THEY WOULD NOT APPLY TO MINOR SUBDIVISIONS OR FAMILY SUBDIVISIONS. SO THE PRIORITY AMENDMENTS AIM TO REFINE THE DEFINITION CALCULATION AND DESIGN STANDARDS FOR OPEN SPACE WITHIN SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENT. EMPHASIZING CONNECTIVITY AND DESIGN CONSISTENCY. UM, IT PRIORITIZES FUNCTIONAL, CONNECTED, AND ACCESSIBLE COMMON OPEN SPACE THAT SHOULD ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR RESIDENTS WITHIN THOSE SUBDIVISIONS. IT ALSO ENHANCES WALKABILITY, IMPROVES COMMUNITY INTEGRATION AND ENSURES A COHESIVE AESTHETIC, UM, WITHIN THESE DEVELOPMENTS. AND HERE'S THE TABLE THAT I MENTIONED THAT WALKS YOU THROUGH THE ISSUES THAT WERE IDENTIFIED AND HOW THE PROPOSED AMENDMENT MEETS THOSE ISSUES THAT WERE IDENTIFIED. UM, THE ISSUE THAT WAS RAISED WAS TO CLARIFY THE DEFINITION OF COMMON OPEN SPACE AND REMOVE DETENTION FACILITIES AND NATIONAL, UM, NATURAL WATER BODIES FROM THE DEFINITION AND TO ADD [00:10:01] DOCS AND BOARDWALKS. THE NEW DEFINITION FOR COMMON OPEN SPACE IS OUTLINED HERE. UM, IT STATES THAT ANY PART OF A DEVELOPMENT SITE MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF SECTION 16 5 1 0 4, THAT'S NOT UTILIZED FOR SINGLE FAMILY LOTS RIGHTS OF WAYS, STREETS, COMMERCIAL STRUCTURES, MULTIFAMILY STRUCTURES, PARKING AND LOADING AREAS, DETENTION PONDS AND NATURAL WATER BODIES. THE FOLLOWING ARE INCLUDED IN THE DEFINITION. GOLF COURSES, TENNIS COURTS, AREAS, OTHER, UH, COURT GAMES, SWIMMING POOLS, PEDESTRIAN BICYCLE PATHS, EQUESTRIAN TRAILS, PLAY FIELDS, PICNIC AREAS, HORSE PADDED STOCKS, BOARDWALKS LOCATED ENTIRELY WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENT PARCEL PLACES FOR PEOPLE TO GATHER IN PASSIVE RECREATION AREAS. THE OTHER ISSUE THAT WAS IDENTIFIED WAS TO CLARIFY LANGUAGE AND ADDITIONAL DESIGN STANDARDS FOR COMMON OPEN SPACES TO REQUIRE HIGHER QUALITY DESIGN AND IMPROVED FUNCTIONAL ACCESS VIA PATHWAYS AND OTHER MEANS, AND REMOVE THE CALCULATION OF REMNANT O OPEN SPACE. UM, THERE ARE SOME, UM, COMMON OPEN SPACE STANDARDS THAT ARE PART OF 16 5 1 0 4. IT IDENTIFIES NOW THAT COMMON OPEN SPACE MUST BE VISUALLY IDENTIFIABLE, DISTINGUISHED BY ELEMENTS SUCH AS SIGNS, FENCING, LANDSCAPE BUFFERS, TRAIL SYSTEMS, POOLS, SPORT FACILITIES, GRASS LAWNS, OR OTHER MEANS APPROVED BY THE OFFICIAL. THERE ALSO IS SOME CRITERIA FOR THE LOCATION AND CONFIGURATION OF COMMON OPEN SPACE THAT IS OUTLINED. THERE'S A REQUIREMENT THAT IT SHALL BE CONNECTED. UM, OPEN SPACE, COMMON OPEN SPACE SHALL BE CONNECTED TO ALL LOTS WITHIN THE SUBDIVISION BY PATHWAYS. UM, ADDITIONALLY, COMMON OPEN SPACE SHALL BE ACCESSIBLE TO ALL RESIDENTS WITHIN THE SUBDIVISION DEVELOPMENT, UM, SUBJECT TO REASONABLE RULES AND REGULATIONS. UM, IT DOES NOT REQUIRE THAT IT BE DEDICATED FOR GENERAL PUBLIC USE. HOWEVER, UM, IT MAY BE THERE ARE A NUMBER OF DESIGN, UM, ESTABLISHMENT, UM, STANDARDS, UM, AND THAT THERE ARE AN AREA OR MULTIPLE AREAS OF COMMON OPEN SPACE BE PLANNED FOR ACTIVE AND PASSIVE RECREATIONAL USE, AT LEAST 75% OF COMMON OPEN SPACE SHALL BE ARRANGED IN DIMENSIONS NO LESS THAN 15 FEET IN ANY DIRECTION. UM, AT LEAST 50% SHALL BE ARRANGED IN ONE CONTIGUOUS AREA, AND THAT THE ARRANGEMENT AND DESIGN OF COMMON OPEN SPACE SHALL PRIORITIZE THE PRESERVATION OF EXISTING TRACKS OF SPECIMEN INSIGNIFICANT TREES. ANOTHER ISSUE WAS RAISED TO REMOVE THE ADJACENT STREET AND USE BUFFER CREDIT. UM, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THAT SECTION WAS STRUCK. UM, WE WILL SHOW SOME EXHIBITS ON FURTHER SLIDES THAT SHOW, UM, OPEN SPACE THAT NO LONGER QUALIFIES, AND THAT'S WHERE THE REMOVAL OF REMNANT OPEN SPACE AND, AND SOME OF THE CRITERIA MENTIONED UP HERE WILL, WILL BE SOLVED BY, UM, SOME OF THOSE EXAMPLES. ADDITIONALLY, THE, THE PEDESTRIAN, UM, CONNECTIVITY COMPONENT, UM, IS INCLUDED. THE CURRENT LANGUAGE OF THE CODE, UM, ENCOURAGES PATHWAY CONNECTIVITY. IT WAS NOT A REQUIREMENT. SO THE ISSUE THAT WAS RAISED IS THAT IT SHOULD BE A REQUIREMENT, NOT ENCOURAGED. AND SO THE CHANGES THAT ARE IDENTIFIED REQUIRES PATHWAY CONNECTIVITY, AND IT IS WELL SPELLED OUT, UH, WITHIN SUBDIVISION STANDARDS LAYOUT OF LOTS AND BLOCKS RELATED TO PATHWAY CONNECTIVITY IN SUBSECTION FIVE. IN THAT SECTION, PATHWAYS ARE REQUIRED THROUGHOUT SUBDIVISIONS. UM, IT APPLIES, IT DOES NOT APPLY AGAIN TO MINOR SUBDIVISIONS AND FAMILY SUBDIVISIONS. PATHWAYS SHALL PROVIDE DIRECT CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN ALL LOTS AND THE SUBDIVISION'S, COMMUNITY AMENITIES, INCLUDING USABLE, COMMON OPEN SPACE MAILBOXES, COMMUNITY BUILDINGS, AND RECREATION AREAS. UM, IT DOES EXPLAIN THAT A LOT LOCATED ACROSS THE STREET FROM A PATHWAY WITHIN THE SAME SUBDIVISION ADJACENT TO COMMON OPEN SPACE IS CONSIDERED TO BE SERVED BY AND CONNECTED TO THAT PATHWAY. UM, SO IT'S A LITTLE BIT, UH, IT PROVIDES SOME PRESCRIBED FLEXIBILITY TO MEET THIS REQUIREMENT. THE PATHWAY SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE CONNECTIVITY FROM WITHIN THE SUBDIVISION, UM, TO AN EXISTING PATHWAY SYSTEM THAT'S LOCATED ALONG, UM, OR A BUDDING, A RIGHT OF WAY. UM, AND ANY PATHWAY SYSTEM THAT'S PLANNED, UM, IN AN ADOPTED TOWN PATHWAY PLAN OR THE CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM. UM, IT ALSO CALLS FOR, UM, THAT IF THE LAND PROPOSED FOR THE SUBDIVISION SERVES AS A PRIORITY CONNECTION BETWEEN EXISTING PATHWAYS AND IS INCLUDED IN ADOPTED TOWN PATHWAY PLAN, THAT THE PATHWAY SYSTEM SHALL BE DESIGNED TO CONNECT TO EXISTING PATHWAYS THROUGH THE SUBDIVISION OR ALONG THE ABUTTING STREET RIGHT OF WAY. ADDITIONALLY, THE AMENDMENT, UM, TERM OPEN SPACE HAS BEEN [00:15:01] UPDATED TO COMMON OPEN SPACE, UM, TO EMPHASIZE THAT IT'S SHARED WITHIN THE DEVELOPMENTS. UM, PATHWAYS ARE REQUIRED UNLESS SIDEWALKS ARE DEMONSTRATED TO BE MORE APPROPRIATE. UM, THERE ARE SPECIFIC DESIGN STANDARDS FOR PATHWAYS AND SIDEWALKS, UM, THAT ARE INCLUDED BY REFERENCE TO, UH, SEVERAL ASSOCIATED PROFESSIONAL MANUALS AND STATUTES, AS WELL AS SOME CHANGES TO THE DEFINITIONS OF PATHWAYS AND SIDEWALKS. THERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES THAT WE INCLUDED IN THE STAFF REPORT OF SOME AREAS WITHIN, UM, TOWN OF HILTON HEAD, UM, EXISTING SUBDIVISIONS THAT WOULD NO LONGER QUALIFY, SUCH AS THIS OPEN SPACE THAT YOU CAN SEE HERE ON THE SCREEN THAT'S ADJACENT TO A STREET. THIS IS BASICALLY IN WHAT I WOULD CALL THE, THE DITCH ALONG THE ROAD. IT CURRENTLY QUALIFIES AS OPEN SPACE, MEANING THE OPEN SPACE CALCULATIONS THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR THAT SUBDIVISION. WITH THE CHANGES PROPOSED TODAY, THIS WOULD NO LONGER BE RE UM, MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR COMMON OPEN SPACE. ADDITIONALLY, THIS DIAGRAM SHOWS SOME PIECES OF OPEN SPACE THAT YOU CAN SEE IDENTIFIED WITH ARROWS UP HERE, UM, SHOWING ADJACENT USE, UH, BUFFER OPEN SPACE PIECES THAT WOULD NOT MEET BOTH THE MINIMUM. UM, THIS ELIMINATES THAT REMNANT OPEN SPACE. UM, IT DOES NOT MEET THE DIMENSIONAL REQUIREMENTS THAT WE'VE IDENTIFIED, UM, IN THE NEW PLAN. SO THESE LITTLE STRIPS OF OPEN SPACE WOULD NO LONGER QUALIFY. THE EXAMPLE HERE SHOWS, UM, A, A DRAINAGE EASEMENT AND LAGOON THAT COUNTS AS OPEN SPACE, UM, THAT WOULD NO LONGER QUALIFY AS QUALIFIED COMMON OPEN SPACE. EVERY 10 YEARS THEY DROP THE LAKE SIGNIFICANTLY LOW, UM, TO KILL AN INVASIVE HYDRILLA PLANT AS WELL AS FOR PEOPLE TO WORK ON THEIR DOCKS. AND SINCE THE DAM AND THE TOWERS ARE SO OLD, IT GIVES THEM A CHANCE TO MAINTENANCE THOSE AS WELL. UM, LAKE MURRAY IS 50,000 ACRES, UM, OF MANMADE LAKE ANDRE ISLAND. UM, BENEFITS FROM THIS LAKE HEAVILY. UM, IT BRINGS SO MUCH, SO MANY GUESTS TO OUR PARK. UM, THEY COME TO HANG OUT HERE AT THE SHELTERS. UM, PITCH A HAMMOCK LAY OUT AT THE LITTLE BEACHY AREA WE HAVE AT OUR OLD OFFICE. UM, IT BRINGS A LOT OF VISITORS COME SUMMERTIME. UM, WE WANNA MAKE SURE THAT, UH, WE HAVE RUNNING WATER, FLUSH THE TOILETS, YOU KNOW, CHECK BEHIND, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING'S CLEAN. THEN WE GO IN TO CHECK IN THE FIRST BEDROOM. I LIKE TO DO IT IN A BIG CIRCLE SO I DON'T MISS ANYTHING WALKING THROUGH THESE VILLAS. WE CHECK ALL THE DRAWERS TO MAKE SURE THAT A GUEST DIDN'T LEAVE ANYTHING BEHIND IN PREVIOUS STAY. MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE WANT TO CHECK UNDER THE BEDS TO MAKE SURE THERE'S NOTHING UNDER THERE THAT, UM, WE'RE CAUSING ISSUE FOR A GUEST. EVERYTHING LOOKS CLEAN. CHECK AROUND IN THE NIGHTSTAND AS WELL. WE'RE GONNA SHRINK THE SOLAR SYSTEM DOWN FROM 3.5 BILLION MILES TO THE SIZE OF THE DISTANCE FROM THE HUNTING ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE TO THE YEE TRAIN STATION, WHICH IS ABOUT 32 MILES. SO LET'S GO. WE ARE STARTING HERE AT THE CENTER OF A SOLAR SYSTEM. OUR SUN, THE SUN IS THE ONLY STAR IN OUR SOLAR SYSTEM, BUT MORE ON THAT LATER. ALL OF THE PLANETS AND EXTRA SOLAR OBJECTS LIKE ASTEROIDS AND COMETS AND OUR SOLAR SYSTEM ORBIT AROUND THE SUN. AT THE SCALE WE ARE USING THE DIAMETER OF THE SUN WOULD BE ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THE HEIGHT OF THIS LIGHTHOUSE. THE FIRST FOUR PLANETS ORBITING AROUND THE SUN ARE ROCKY PLANETS AND RELATIVELY CLOSE. THE FIRST ONE IS MERCURY, AND ON OUR SCALE ONLY ABOUT A THIRD OF A MILE AWAY FROM THE SUN AND SMALL ABOUT THE SIZE OF A PINK PONG BALL. MERCURY IS THE SMALLEST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM, AND IT TAKES ONLY 88 EARTH DAYS FOR IT TO MAKE A COMPLETE REVOLUTION AROUND THE SUN. VENUS HAS A VERY THICK ATMOSPHERE CREATING A GREENHOUSE EFFECT THAT RESULTS IN EXTREMELY HOT TEMPERATURES ON THE PLANET'S SURFACE. IT ALSO HAS VOLCANOES, SOME OF WHICH ARE THOUGHT TO BE ACTIVE. VENUS IS ONE OF THE PLANETS THAT IS EASILY VISIBLE IN THE NIGHT SKY FROM EARTH. IN FACT, IT IS THE BRIGHTEST OBJECT OTHER THAN THE MOON. NOW HERE WE'RE AT EARTH'S LOCATION, JUST LESS THAN A MILE AWAY FROM THE SUN. EARTH WOULD BE JUST A LITTLE BIT LARGER THAN VENUS. THE EARTH IS HIGHLY UNIQUE AMONG ALL PLANETS. IT SUPPORTS A VAST DIVERSITY OF LIFE. JUST OVER ONTO HARBOR ISLAND. HERE WE ARE AT MARS, A LITTLE MORE THAN A MILE AWAY FROM OUR SUN. MARS IS THE LAST OF THE ROCKY PLANETS. IT IS A PLANET SIMILAR TO EARTH. HAVING AN ATMOSPHERE, SIMILAR GEOLOGY, AND EVEN FROZEN WATER PRESENT, IT TAKES ABOUT TWICE AS LONG FOR MARS TO GO AROUND THE SUN THAN THE EARTH DOES. NASA'S CURIOSITY ROVER HAS BEEN ON THE SURFACE OF MARS SINCE 2012. EXPLORING AND ANALYZING THE PLANET BETWEEN MARS AND THE GIANT PLANETS IS AN ASTEROID BELT. ON OUR SCALE. THE ASTEROIDS WOULD BE TINY, LIKE THE GRAINS OF SAND WASHING IN AND OUT WITH THE TIDE. JUPITER'S COMPARATIVELY FAR AWAY, MORE THAN FIVE TIMES THE DISTANCE FROM THE SUN AS EARTH. AND IT'S HUGE. IT'S MORE THAN TWICE THE MASS OF ALL THE PLANETS COMBINED. CONVECTION FROM THE INTENSE HEAT IN JUPITER'S CORE CREATES VIOLENT WEATHER ON THE PLANET. THE RED SPOT IS A HUGE STORM, LARGER THAN THE DIAMETER OF EARTH. JUPITER ALSO SPINS VERY RAPIDLY, WHICH IS WHAT CREATES ITS STRIPED APPEARANCE. NEXT COMES SATURN TWICE THE DISTANCE FROM THE SUN. AS JUPITER AND A LITTLE BIT SMALLER, SATURN IS SURROUNDED BY RINGS MADE UP OF ICE, DUST, AND CHUNKS OF ROCK. DOUBLE THE DISTANCE AGAIN, AND WE REACH URANUS ON OUR SCALE ABOUT 15 MILES AWAY. AND THE SIZE OF THE BEACH BALL. URANUS IS UNIQUE FROM THE OTHER PLANETS BECAUSE IT ROTATES ON ITS SIDE IN RELATION TO THE SUN. NEPTUNE, THE OTHER ICE GIANT IS ONCE AGAIN NEARLY TWICE THE DISTANCE FROM THE SUN AS ITS NEAREST NEIGHBOR. NEPTUNE AND URANUS ARE ABOUT THE SAME SIZE, AND BOTH PLANETS HAVE METHANE IN THEIR ATMOSPHERES, MAKING THEM APPEAR BLUE. LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THEM DUE TO THEIR EXTREME DISTANCES FROM EARTH. THIS IS THE HOME OF THE KUPER BELT, AN AREA OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM CONTAINING COMETS, ASTEROIDS, AND OTHER SMALL ICY OBJECTS. THE KUPER BELT IS HOME TO PLUTO ONCE THE LAST PLANET IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM. BUT NOW CONSIDERED A DWARF PLANET PLUTO WOULD ONLY BE ABOUT THE SIZE OF A WALL ON OUR SCALE, BUT THIS IS NOT THE EDGE OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM. THERE'S MORE BEYOND PLUTO. THE FURTHEST KNOWN OBJECT THAT IS PART OF OUR SOLAR SYSTEM IS THREE TIMES FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SUN THAN PLUTO. AND THE ACTUAL EDGE OF THE SOLAR SYSTEM EXTENDS EVEN FURTHER.
