[III. Introduction of Board & Administration]

INTRODUCTION TO THE BOARD MEMBERS AND ADMINISTRATION.

AND I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE TODAY OUR NEWEST BOARD MEMBER KATHY COOPER, AND SHE IS IN DISTRICT FIVE.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY A FEW WORDS? SURE.

I WAS WARNED THIS WAS GONNA HAPPEN, SO I WROTE DOWN A FEW THINGS SO I DIDN'T FORGET.

UM, MY HUSBAND AND I HAVE LIVED IN THE LOW COUNTRY FOR ABOUT 25 YEARS NOW.

WE LIVE ON SPRING ISLAND, UH, MOVED HERE FROM INDIANA, WHICH IS WHERE I ACTUALLY GREW UP.

SO I'M MARRIED.

I HAVE A STEPSON WHO IS IN CHARLESTON AND TWO GRAND BOYS.

ONE IS 16 AND ONE IS 19.

I'M A NURSE AND MY BACKGROUND IS IN THE OPERATING ROOM.

UM, I AM A VOLUNTEER FOR VOLUNTEERS IN MEDI BLUFFTON VOLUNTEERS IN MEDICINE.

I TEACH THEM CPR, UH, THE NURSES, THE DOCTORS, THE DENTAL STAFF.

I ALSO TEACH CPR TO SPRING ISLAND MEMBERS THAT WANT TO RENEW.

UM, WE HAVE A NATURE CENTER ON SPRING ISLAND, AND I VOLUNTEER AT THE NATURE CENTER.

I AM A MEMBER OF THE BEAUFORD LIBRARY, FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY.

AND JUST WHAT, A COUPLE WEEKS AGO, AMANDA, UH, WORKED AT THE, AT THE ANNUAL BOOK SALE, AND I'M ALSO A ON THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE AT TCL ON THE SURGICAL TECH PROGRAM.

PREVIOUSLY, I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE OF INTEREST.

UM, I HAVE VOLUNTEERED OR WORKED IN THE COUNTY IN THE UNITED WAY FOR THEIR COMMUNITY INVESTMENT PROGRAM.

THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT IS A DISASTER VOLUNTEER.

UH, RED CROSS IS A DISASTER SHELTER VOLUNTEER, UH, SERVED ON THE MARSH ASSOCIATION.

THE OPEN LAND TRUST IS A DOCENT AT AL BRASS WHEN THEY DO THAT.

UM, AND I WAS ON THE BEAUFORD MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR EIGHT YEARS.

UH, MY HUSBAND AND I ARE BOTH SCUBA DIVERS AS HIS OLDEST GRANDSON, SO A LOT OF OUR VACATIONS ARE SCUBA DIVE FOCUSED.

I LOVE TO KAYAK, AND MY HUSBAND AND STEPSON ALL WENT, BOTH WENT TO OHIO STATE, AND SO I'M AN OHIO STATE FAN.

THAT MAY BE GOOD.

THAT MAY, I JUST WANNA SAY GO BUCKS .

OH, REALLY? I HAVE MY GO BUCKS SHIRT ON.

I LOVE IT.

THEY'RE DOING WELL THIS YEAR.

I KNOW.

WE WON'T MAKE PEOPLE IN SOUTH CAROLINA FEEL BAD ABOUT THAT.

SO IS INDIANA ? AND I'M THRILLED TO, UH, BE ON YOUR BOARD WITH Y'ALL.

WELL, WE ARE, WE'RE EXCITED THAT YOU'RE GONNA BE PART OF THIS BOARD AND, UM, I'M THINK YOU'RE GONNA BE A TERRIFIC MEMBER.

SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR, THANK YOU FOR APPLYING.

AND WE HAD FOUR, UH, FOUR APPLICATIONS AND, UH, WE HAVE 2 1, 1 IS HOLDING, WAITING UNTIL WE HAVE A SPACE, BUT, UM, KEEP THOSE APPLICATIONS COMING BECAUSE WE ARE CHANGING ALL THE TIME.

SO, THANK YOU.

UH, IS, CAN

[V. Approval of Minutes:]

I HAVE A, UM, CAN I HAVE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM SEPTEMBER THAT WOULD, THEY WERE ALL MAILED OUT TO YOU.

IS THERE ANY CHANGES TO THOSE ALL? SO MOVE SECOND, SECOND, SECOND.

ALL IN FAVOR? YES.

AYE, AYE.

OPPOSED? NO.

OKAY.

UM, AMANDA, IS THERE

[VI. Correspondence and Communications]

ANY CORRESPONDENCE? YEAH.

I WANNA SHARE WITH YOU A LETTER FROM, UM, SENATOR TIM SCOTT.

WE'VE RECEIVED, UM, RIGHT AFTER YOUR LAST MEETING, AND IT SAYS, DEAR FRIENDS, CONGRATULATIONS ON THE OPENING OF SAMUEL E. MURRAY PUBLIC LIBRARY.

YOUR DILIGENT WORK IN THE COMMUNITY IS MUCH APPRECIATED, AND I WISH YOU MUCH LUCK AS YOU EMBARK ON THIS EXCITING VENTURE.

THIS OCCASION IS A WELL-DESERVED DISTINCTION AND A TESTAMENT TO YOUR DEDICATION TO THE PALMETTO STATE.

PLEASE ACCEPT MY BEST WISHES AND LET ME KNOW IF THERE'S ANYTHING I CAN DO FOR YOU.

SINCERELY, TIM SCOTT, UNITED STATES SENATOR, YOU ALSO HAVE, UM, DISTRIBUTED BEFORE YOU A COPY OF A MEMORANDUM I RECEIVED FROM THE STATE LIBRARY.

I WAS ASKED AS THE LAST LINE OF IT SAYS TO PLEASE SHARE THIS MEMORANDUM

[00:05:01]

WITH YOUR LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES, THIS MEMORANDUM.

UM, YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO READ OVER IT, UM, BUT IT IS FROM THE STATE LIBRARY INFORMING YOU THAT THEY'VE SOUGHT AN OPINION FROM THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATTORNEY GENERAL REGARDING PROVISO 27.1, WHICH YOU MAY REMEMBER THAT PROVISO SAYS, I DON'T HAVE THE FULL, UM, LANGUAGE OF THE PROVISO, BUT IT TALKS ABOUT, UM, NOT DISSEMINATING, PROCURING, OR PROMOTING OBSCENITY UNLAWFUL, UM, MATERIAL DESIGNATED AS PUR OR OF PUR INTEREST.

YOU'LL REMEMBER THAT THE, THE STATE ATTORNEY DID NOT MAKE AN OPINION, AND THAT'S THE PURPOSE OF THIS LETTER.

OKAY.

THANK YOU.

UM, MAY WE HAVE THE, YOUR

[VII. Library Director’s Report]

DIRECTOR'S REPORT? ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.

THIS MIGHT TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME.

I HAVE A LOT OF EXCITING INFORMATION TO SHARE WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT OUR LIBRARIES HAVE DONE IN THE LAST TWO MONTHS SINCE YOU MET.

SO YOU HAVE YOUR SCREEN HERE SO YOU CAN SEE SOME PHOTOS.

AND ALSO, UM, I'LL BE TALKING TO YOU NARRATING ALL THE FUN STUFF WE HAVE TO GO OVER.

SO IT'S BEEN A BUSY, THIS IS A BUSY TIME OF YEAR FOR OUR LIBRARIES.

UM, OCTOBER IS HUGE WITH OUTREACH EVENTS AND ALSO LIBRARY EVENTS.

UM, IT'S THE SPOOKY TIME OF YEAR.

IT'S THE TRICK OR TREATING TIME OF YEAR, IT'S COSTUMES, IT'S CANDY, IT'S PUMPKINS.

UM, LOTS OF GREAT THINGS.

AND SO YOU SEE KIND OF AN ASSORTMENT OF, UM, ACTIVITIES THAT HAPPENED STARTING IN THE LEFT.

WE HAVE OUR, UM, HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION THAT HAPPENS HERE IN THIS ROOM WHERE YOU'RE SITTING IN THE BLUFFTON LIBRARY EVERY SEPTEMBER OR OCTOBER TO CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.

SO THOSE YOUNG INDIVIDUALS ARE WEARING THEIR, UM, ATTIRE IN DEMONSTRATING DANCE RELATIVE TO THEIR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN.

WE ALSO HAVE A YOUNGSTER AT THE HILTON ED LIBRARY MAKING A SKIPPY JOHN JONES TOTE BAG TO GO WITH SKIPPY JOHN JONES PICTURE BOOK.

I SEE WE HAVE SOME MOMS IN THE AUDIENCE WHO KNOW SKIPPY JOHN VERY WELL.

UM, WE THANK OUR COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR FOR ALLOWING US TO DRESS UP, UM, ON HALLOWEEN.

AND SO YOU SEE AC AND ITEL HERE, OUR BLUFFTON STAFF DRESSED UP FOR HALLOWEEN.

UM, THE BIG PICTURE OF ALL OF US IN OUR BLUE IS FROM STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY THAT WAS HELD IN OCTOBER.

THAT'S A DAY WHERE ALL LIBRARY STAFF GATHERED TOGETHER FOR A DAY OF TRAINING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, AND IN THIS CASE A PHOTO.

IN THE BOTTOM.

YOU ALSO SEE ANOTHER YOUNGSTER AT HILTON HEAD CREATING A TOTE BAG.

UM, OUR LITTLE PUMPKIN IS FROM LOKO PARTICIPATING IN A PUMPKIN, WHAT THEY CALLED A PUMPKIN PATCH, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS REALLY CUTE.

AND THEN AT PORT ROYAL, WE HAVE OUR READ TO A DOG PROGRAM.

SO WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT THERE'S NEVER A DULL DAY IN A LIBRARY, IT IS TRUE.

IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING GOING ON.

I WANNA SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SOME THINGS THAT I'VE DONE RECENTLY.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT, UM, THAT DR. PORTER GETS TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IS WHAT HAS AMANDA DONE TO CONTINUE TO DEVELOP HERSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL? WELL, I DIDN'T PLAN IT THIS WAY, BUT TWO WEEKS BACK TO BACK, I ATTENDED TWO CONFERENCES.

ONE OF THEM WAS TOGETHER FOR TOMORROW, THE SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.

THAT WAS HELD ON THE LAST WEEK OF OCTOBER IN COLUMBIA.

AND THEN ONE WEEK LATER I PARTICIPATED IN LIBRARY JOURNAL'S DIRECTOR SUMMIT, A LIBRARY DIRECTOR ONLY EVENT, ALSO HELD IN COLUMBIA, WHERE DIRECTORS FROM PUBLIC LIBRARIES ACROSS THE NATION GATHER AND TALK ABOUT THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE PROFESSION AND HOW TO MOVE FORWARD FOR SCLA.

I PARTICIPATED ALSO AS, UM, A MEMBER OF THE PLANNING OR THE CONFERENCE PLANNING, UM, TEAM.

SO I GOT TO TALK TO VENDORS AND HAVE THEM PARTICIPATE.

WE HAD, BASED ON OUR, UM, BASED ON A COLLECTIVE EFFORT OF THE ENTIRE TEAM, WE HAD THE MOST VENDORS THAT I'VE SEEN IN THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS, WHICH IS GREAT.

AT THE DIRECTOR SUMMIT LAST WEEK.

UM, I JUST WANNA SHARE WITH YOU THAT I WENT INTO IT THINKING THAT I WAS A LITTLE DOG, RIGHT? THE BEAUFORT COUNTY, WE HAVE SIX BRANCHES NOW, TWO BOOKMOBILES, ALMOST A MILLION DOLLARS IN MATERIALS.

WE'RE NOT THE SMALLEST LIBRARY SYSTEM IN THE STATE, BUT WE'RE ALSO NOT THE BIGGEST.

BUT I WAS SITTING AT A TABLE WITH THE HEAD OF BOSTON, THE HEAD OF CINCINNATI, THE HEAD OF HOUSTON, AND MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS,

[00:10:01]

OH, BIG POND, LITTLE FISH .

BUT I HAVE TO TELL YOU, AS I LISTEN TO THEM TALK, NUMBER ONE, THEY ARE, UM, VERY SMART, VERY ACCOMPLISHED EXECUTIVES WHO ARE RUNNING THOSE LIBRARIES.

THEY'RE VERY, UM, VERY WELCOMING AS WELL.

SO THEY, UM, WERE HAPPY TO SHARE, BUT HERE'S WHAT I WANT YOU TO TAKE AWAY FROM THAT.

OVER THE COURSE OF THOSE TWO DAYS, THE CHALLENGES AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE HAVE IN BEAUFORT COUNTY ARE THE SAME ACROSS THE NATION.

THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH THE COST OF EBOOKS, THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH MULTIPLE PLATFORMS, THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH FINDING SKILLED WORKERS.

THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH THE SAME THINGS AND THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT WE ASK OURSELVES.

SO I SHARE THAT WITH YOU BECAUSE IT WAS ENCOURAGING TO ME TO KNOW THAT THE BIG DOGS IN THE BUSINESS, UM, HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITIES AND OBSTACLES IN FRONT OF THEM AS WE DO.

UM, AND TO LET YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE WELL REPRESENTED, AT LEAST I DO SAY SO MYSELF.

ONE OH, GO AHEAD.

AND AT THE, AT THE, GO BACK TO THE PREVIOUS SLIDE AT THE DIRECTOR SUMMIT MEETING, WHICH WAS A NATIONAL MEETING.

WERE THERE ANY OTHER DIRECTORS FROM THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA? YES, THERE WERE.

SINCE IT WAS HELD IN COLUMBIA, IT WAS EASIER FOR SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARY DIRECTORS TO ATTEND.

IN PREVIOUS YEARS IT'S BEEN IN BOSTON AND IN TEXAS AND OTHER PLACES.

SO VERY, UM, VERY MUCH A BLESSING TO THE PALMETTO STATE TO BE ABLE TO HOST IT.

OH, WOW.

OKAY.

AND HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD'VE BEEN THERE? ABOUT A HUNDRED.

WOW.

THEY CAP, YOU KNOW, THEY PUT A REGISTRATION AMOUNT ON, A LIMITED REGISTRATION AMOUNT ON IT, AND IT'S FIRST SIGN UP, FIRST, GET THE SEAT.

AND, UM, THE HEAD OF CINCINNATI SAID I'D SEE HER IN CLEVELAND NEXT YEAR.

SO YEAH, WE HOPE THAT'S WHERE IT'LL BE.

OKAY, I SEE CLEVELAND LYNN LYNN, YOU'LL TAKE ME ACROSS THE DIRECTOR SUMMIT.

ACROSS THOSE TWO DAYS, WE ENGAGED IN A LOT OF TABLE TALK CONVERSATIONS, AND I WANTED TO BRING ONE TO YOU, AND I'M GONNA ASK YOU THIS QUESTION, USING SIX WORDS, COMPLETE THE SENTENCE, THE LIBRARY, 10 YEARS FROM NOW IN 2035, WILL BE, MUST BE, WILL NOT BE OR MUST NOT BE.

HOW WOULD YOU COMPLETE THAT SENTENCE USING SIX WORDS ONLY? I WOULD SAY THE LIBRARY IN 2035 WILL BE ROBUST, ROBUST, MORE THAN A WAREHOUSE FOR BOOKS.

LET'S, LET'S COUNT.

IS THAT SIX MORE THAN A WAREHOUSE FOR, WELL, WE'LL GIVE YOU THE, A'S WE'LL GIVE YOU THE ARTICLES.

, LIBRARY FOR EVERYBODY.

JANINE, DID YOU, I WAS GONNA SAY SOMETHING SIMILAR, JUST CONTINUING TO BE WELCOMING TO ALL.

IT WAS FUN TO HEAR ALL OF THE LIBRARY DIRECTORS ANSWER THAT IN ONLY SIX, SIX WORDS.

THERE IS A BOOK CALLED LIBRARY 2035 THAT'S AVAILABLE ON AMAZON THAT IS A COLLECTION OF, UM, PROFESSIONALS, UM, FROM ACADEMIC LIBRARIANS TO, UM, PUBLIC LIBRARIANS WHO'VE ANSWERED THAT QUESTION AS WELL.

SO IF YOU WANNA CHECK THAT OUT, YOU CAN.

SO, MOVING ON, I'M GONNA MOVE INTO OUR UPDATES, AND AS JANET LIKES TO PORT OUT, POINT OUT, I CAPTURE OUR UPDATES ACCORDING TO THE FOUR GOALS OF OUR STRATEGIC PLAN.

SO WE'LL START WITH COMMUNICATION.

SO ON OCTOBER THE 14TH, WHICH IS A MONDAY COLUMBUS DAY, WE CHOSE, UM, TO HAVE OUR IN SERVICE STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY.

AND OVER THE COURSE OF THAT DAY, WE PARTICIPATED IN DISC TRAINING.

DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW WHAT DISC TRAINING IS? OKAY, KATHY, AS THE NEWEST MEMBER, WOULD YOU GIVE THIS ONE OF THESE TO EVERYBODY? THE WIT I'M GONNA GIVE YOU JUST A HANDOUT THAT'S AN OVERVIEW OF THE DISC ASSESSMENT.

IF YOU'RE NOT FAMILIAR WITH IT, SOME PEOPLE CALL IT A PERSONALITY ASSESSMENT.

IT'S REALLY MORE OF A STYLE.

IT'S A STYLING OF HOW YOU AS A PERSON MOVE THROUGH THE WORLD AND, AND THINK AND PROCESS.

WE HAD ALL OF OUR STAFF GO THROUGH AN ONLINE ASSESSMENT TO FIND OUT WHAT THEIR NATURAL DISC STYLE IS.

THEY THEN FOLLOWED THAT UP WITH A THREE HOUR TRAINING SESSION TO UNDERSTAND WHAT THAT MEANS.

AND THEN ON STAFF DAY AS A FULL DEPARTMENT, WE ALL SHARED OUR STYLE AND TRIED TO SEE HOW THOSE STYLES INTERACT IN THE WORKPLACE.

WHAT YOU SEE ON THE SCREEN IS MY PROFILE.

I AM PREDOMINANTLY A C THINKER.

THAT MEANS I'M A THINKER, I'M A PLANNER.

I'M NOT A KNEE JERK REACTION TYPE OF PERSON.

I'M GONNA THINK ABOUT IT FORWARDS, BACKWARDS, AND THEN MAKE A CHOICE.

THAT ALSO MEANS I'M

[00:15:01]

RELIABLE AND STEADY.

YOU ALSO SEE THAT, UM, I HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF THE D WHICH IS, UM, MORE DOMINANCE, BUT THAT'S A, THAT'S A DECISION MAKER.

THAT'S A, THAT'S A MOVER, THAT'S A GET OR DONE PERSON.

I HAVE LESS ON THE EYE.

I THINK THAT'S WHEN I PLAY GUITAR.

I THINK THAT'S WHEN THAT COMES OUT.

EYES ARE THE SOCIAL PEOPLE, THE INFLUENCERS, THE ENTERTAINERS.

THEY'RE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE, UM, THE, THE KIND OF THE CELEBRITY PERSONA.

THEY'RE, THEY'RE VERY MUCH LIFE OF THE PARTY.

AND THEN THE S'S ARE PEOPLE WHO, UM, THINK ABOUT THEY'RE OTHER PEOPLE.

THEY'RE THE HARMONIZERS, THEY'RE THE PEACEMAKERS, THEY'RE THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT AND ACCOMMODATING EVERYBODY ELSE.

SO NOW YOU KNOW WHAT MY STYLE IS AND WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT ON STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY WAS HOW THESE STYLES IN THE WORKPLACE CAN COMPLIMENT OR CAUSE CONFLICT IF WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO FLEX.

SO JUST BECAUSE MY NATURAL THING IS TO PLAN AND THINK AND SCHEME.

SOMETIMES I NEED TO BE THE LIFE OF THE PARTY AND SOMETIMES I NEED TO BE ACCOMMODATING AND THINKING ABOUT OTHERS.

AND SOMETIMES I JUST NEED TO PULL THE TRIGGER AND MAKE A CHOICE.

SO KNOWING WHEN AND HOW OTHER PEOPLE APPROACH THINGS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DAY.

WE ALSO HAD UNIT MEETINGS.

SO AS A LIBRARY STAFF, WE HAVE PEOPLE WHO WORK IN SIX DIFFERENT BUILDINGS, TWO BOOKMOBILES AND IN VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS.

AND SOME OF THOSE FUNCTIONS OVERLAP.

WE HAVE SELECTORS, SO PEOPLE AT EACH BRANCH WHO, UM, RECOMMEND ITEMS FOR PURCHASE AND THEY DON'T OFTEN GET TO SIT AND TALK WITH EACH OTHER.

WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO CHECKBOOKS IN AND OUT.

WE CALL THAT OUR CIRCULATION TEAM.

THEY DON'T ALWAYS GET TO SIT AND TALK WITH EACH OTHER.

SO WE HAD UNIT MEETINGS WHERE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING THE SAME JOB FUNCTIONS GET TO SIT AND, AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH EACH OTHER, HASH OUT ISSUES THAT THEY MIGHT BE HAVING.

ASK QUESTIONS, LEARN INFORMATION, AND KIND OF GET ON ONE PAGE.

AND THEN WE ALSO HAD AN OPPORTUNITY IN THE AFTERNOON FOR BRANCH STAFF TO HAVE A MEETING AND HAVE A STAFF UPDATE AS WELL AS BRANCH PHOTOS AND LIBRARY PHOTOS.

SO EACH STAFF MEMBER HAS A PROFESSIONAL PHOTO NOW THAT THEY CAN USE IN THEIR CAREER ON THEIR EMAILS, THINGS LIKE THAT.

AND WE HAVE BRANCH PHOTOS THAT WE CAN PUT ON OUR WEBSITE AND A FULL STAFF PHOTO.

THAT WAS OUR STAFF DAY.

YES.

HOW DID IT, HOW DID THE, IF YOU REMEMBER, HOW DID THE LIBRARIANS, ALL THE, ALL THE STAFF BREAKOUT AS FAR AS WHO WAS DOMINANT IN THE DISC? DO YOU REMEMBER, I'M GONNA TURN THAT BACK ON YOU AS A WHOLE BOARD.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PEOPLE WHO WORK IN LIBRARIES, ? THINK ABOUT THE INTERACTIONS YOU'VE HAD AT EACH OF OUR BRANCHES, THE, THE STAFF MEMBERS THAT YOU'VE MET.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OUR BREAKDOWN IS? I WILL TELL YOU THERE IS A STYLE THAT WE HAVE MORE OF THAN ANY OTHERS.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS OUR PREDOMINANT STYLE? SEE, SAY STEADINESS.

SEE IS THE PREDOMINANT, WE HAVE A LOT OF C'S, ABOUT 50% OF US ARE C'S.

YEAH.

WHAT WOULD YOU THINK IS THE NEXT STEADINESS? STEADINESS.

S YEP.

AND THEN WE HAVE A FEW D'S AND A FEW I'S, YEAH.

NICE.

VERY NICE.

THANK YOU.

OUR SECOND, UM, GOAL OF THE STRATEGIC PLAN IS COLLECTIONS.

SO WE'RE ALWAYS LOOKING AT WAYS TO, UM, TELL PEOPLE WHAT WE HAVE AND MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEM TO USE IT.

SO TODAY I WANTED TO DO A SPOTLIGHT ON TUTOR.COM, AND THE REASON WHY IS WHEN I LOOKED AT THE STATS, IT JUMPED OFF THE PAGE.

IF YOU LOOK AT THE GRAPH, YOU'RE GONNA SEE ALMOST NON-USE FOR A WHOLE YEAR AND THEN A BIG SPIKE IN USAGE.

AND SO I ASKED MYSELF, WHY, WHY DID THAT HAPPEN? TUTOR.COM, FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T REALIZE WHAT IT IS, IT IS AN ONLINE ON DEMAND OR BY APPOINTMENT TUTORING SERVICE.

IT WILL TUTOR IT, IT PAIRS YOU UP WITH A PERSON WHO CAN READ YOUR, UM, YOUR WRITING ASSIGNMENT, OFFER YOU FEEDBACK, GRAMMAR, CRITIQUE, UM, THEY CAN TUTOR YOU IN MATH, SCIENCE, ANY SUBJECT.

AND IT'S ALL AGES.

SO ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND EVEN PEOPLE WHO AREN'T PURSUING A DEGREE, BUT JUST WANT SOME SKILL IMPROVEMENT.

THE, UM, THE CIRCULAR GRAPH SHOWS YOU LAST MONTH'S STATISTICS.

WE HAD 55% OF HIGH SCHOOLERS ACCESSED TUTOR.COM FOR HELP.

AND I WILL TELL YOU, JUST BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE ROOM, IT MIGHT, IT MIGHT BE ON THE NEXT SLIDE THAT THE MAJORITY OF THAT WAS FOR MATH.

IT DOESN'T SURPRISE YOU BEHIND THE HIGH SCHOOLERS, WE HAD MIDDLE SCHOOLERS TAKING UP 17% ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AT 14%, COLLEGE AT 9%, AND ADULT LEARNERS AT 3%.

IT

[00:20:03]

OVERALL, IN AUGUST 14, TUTORING SESSIONS OCCURRED IN SEPTEMBER 80, TUTORING SESSIONS OCCURRED.

AND IN OCTOBER, 110 TUTORING SESSIONS OCCURRED.

PART OF THAT CAN BE ACCOUNTED FOR THE FACT THAT SCHOOL CAME BACK IN SESSION IN AUGUST.

BUT IF YOU LOOK COMPARED TO THE OTHER MONTHS, IT'S STILL OFF THE CHARTS COMPARED TO WHAT WE HAD BEEN HAVING.

SO I WANTED TO FIND OUT WHY.

AND AMANDA, ARE YOU GONNA DESCRIBE, THIS IS A SERVICE THAT WE PAY FOR AT THE LIBRARY? YEAH.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

FOR, AND IT'S A SUBSCRIPTION AND THEN IT'S AVAILABLE TO OUR CLIENTS FOR FREE.

YES.

EXPLAIN ALL THAT.

I ALSO, THAT'S SOMETHING FOR YOU TO HANG OUT, HANG, HANG IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS OR DISTRIBUTE TO ANYBODY THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE.

THANK YOU FOR THAT.

UM, TUTOR.COM IS PROVIDED TO ALL RESIDENTS IN SOUTH CAROLINA BY THE STATE LIBRARY.

SO IT IS FUNDED BY STATE DOLLARS AND IT'S MADE AVAILABLE REGARDLESS OF LIBRARY CARD ACCOUNT.

IT'S AVAILABLE TO ANY PERSON.

UM, WE HAVE A LINK TO IT PROVIDED BY THE STATE LIBRARY SO THAT WE CAN HAVE, WE CAN DIRECT PEOPLE FROM OUR WEBSITE, BUT IT IS 100% FREE.

AND IT DOES NOT ASK YOU FOR A LIBRARY CARD.

SO DOES THAT MEAN, DOES THAT MEAN THIS IS, IS THIS FOR BEAUFORT COUNTY? THIS IS OUR USAGE.

THIS IS BEAUFORT COUNTY USAGE.

THIS IS NOT THE WHOLE STATE.

SO WHEN YOU, RIGHT.

SO WHEN YOU SAY OUR USAGE, SO I'M AT HOME AND I GET ON TUTOR.COM THAT GETS CAPTURED AND I HAVE A LIBRARY HOLDER THAT GETS CAPTURED.

MM-HMM.

, IF YOU'VE GONE THROUGH IT GETS CAPTURED WHETHER I'M A LIBRARY HOLDER OR NOT.

CORRECT.

OKAY.

I UNDERSTAND.

INTERESTING.

I BELIEVE THAT IT IS ABLE TO TELL BY YOUR, YOUR GEOGRAPHY ON YOUR IP ADDRESS WHERE IT'S CONNECTING, AND THEN IF IT CONNECTED THROUGH OUR WEBSITE TO IT.

AND THERE'S THE BREAKDOWN OF WHAT TOPICS WERE UTILIZED, HOW MANY HOURS WHERE UTILIZED.

AND THE, AND THE BIGGEST ONE IS MATH, BUT ALSO WORLD LANGUAGES.

I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY INTERESTING AS WELL.

YES, SIR.

YEAH, I'VE, I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING TUTOR AND, AND THE ACTIVITIES HERE, BUT I'VE NEVER USED IT.

IS THIS A LIVE TUTOR? IS THIS INTERPERSONAL? IT IS.

IT CAN BE LIVE.

SO SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT THAT IS REACHED, THAT'S CORRECT.

THEY EMPLOY PEOPLE WHO ARE SUBJECT EXPERTS AND THEY ARE LIVE 24 7.

BUT YOU CAN ALSO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT IF YOU KNOW THAT YOU NEED SOMEONE AT A SPECIFIC TIME.

AND HOW DOES THE CITIZENRY FIND OUT ABOUT THIS? I MEAN, I'M SURPRISED WE HAVE SO LITTLE USAGE EVEN AT 110, BECAUSE I WOULD THINK KIDS WOULD GO CRAZY THINKING, YOU KNOW, I CAN GET A MATH TUTOR LIKE THIS.

AND SO HOW DO, HOW DO, HOW DO PEOPLE FIND OUT ABOUT THIS? YOU KNOW, THAT'S THE QUESTION THAT WE'RE TRYING TO ANS OR FIGURE OUT HOW TO BETTER TELL PEOPLE ABOUT IT.

AND SO WHAT I WAS GONNA TELL YOU IS WHERE I THINK THAT THE, OUR USAGE INCREASED IS THAT WE MADE AN INTENTIONAL EFFORT TO TELL PEOPLE WE, WE WENT TO BACK TO SCHOOL EVENTS.

WE WENT TO, UM, EVENTS AT SCHOOLS, AND WE ALSO JUST AT OUR SERVICE DESKS, PUSHED IT OUT IN SEPTEMBER.

WE INCLUDED THIS AS A RESOURCE HIGHLIGHT IN OUR EMAIL NEWSLETTER TO ALL CARDHOLDERS.

SO I THINK THAT'S WHY YOU SAW THAT SPIKE IN SEPTEMBER AS WELL.

SO IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT IT.

I WOULD NOTE THAT I, I WOULD SPECULATE AS A PARENT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THIS STAGE OF LIFE, THE SEPTEMBER USAGE CORRELATING TO MATH PROBABLY ALSO DIRECTLY CORRELATES TO SAT AND PSAT TIMES BECAUSE THOSE TESTS WERE GIVEN IN OCTOBER.

SO, UM, THAT HOPEFULLY THAT'S THE CASE.

AND, UM, PEOPLE ARE UTILIZING THIS AMAZING RESOURCE, UM, BECAUSE TEACHERS AREN'T ALWAYS AVAILABLE AFTER HOURS WHEN YOU'RE HOME AFTER SCHOOL AND SPORTS AND FAMILY.

AND THIS IS AMAZING.

IT IS.

IT REALLY IS.

SO IF YOU WOULD HELP US, JOIN US IN TELLING THE, TELLING OUR, OUR PEOPLE ALL ACROSS THE STATE THAT THIS IS AVAILABLE TO THEM.

I THOUGHT, JEANINE, YOU WERE GONNA SAY THAT IT WOULD COINCIDE WITH PROGRESS REPORTS, WHICH I COULD TOTALLY THEN MAYBE POSSIBLY THAT AS WELL.

BUT YEAH, OUR THIRD STRATEGY IS SPACE.

UM, AND I AM PLEASED TO SHOW YOU OUR WRAPPED LOCKERS.

SO THESE ARE THE LOCKERS YOU'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT, AS OUR STAFF SAID.

ARE THESE FINALLY THE LOCKERS I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT FOR THREE YEARS? YES.

THESE ARE THE LOCKERS YOU'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT FOR THREE YEARS.

WE NOW HAVE THEM WRAPPED AND THEY ARE, UM, THEY'VE BEEN TESTED.

WE'VE HAD, UM, FOCUS GROUPS TEST THEM OUT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE WORKING PROPERLY.

SINCE THEY ARE AT A RECREATION CENTER WITHOUT ANY LIBRARY STAFF.

WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE WEREN'T PUTTING A BURDEN ON THE RECREATION STAFF TO INHERIT ANY, ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS. SO WE'RE TRYING TO ANTICIPATE ALL THE POSSIBLE THINGS THAT COULD HAPPEN.

AND I THINK WE'RE READY TO LAUNCH OUR MARKETING TEAM IS, UM, LOOKING AT THE CALENDAR AND DETERMINING WHEN WOULD BE A GOOD TIME

[00:25:01]

TO LAUNCH THIS NEW SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC.

AND WHO IS PHOTOED THERE? THAT'S PROBABLY A QUESTION.

WHO IS THAT? WELL, THAT'S ME IN THE PINK.

UM, BUT THE, UM, THE YOUNG LADY WITH ME, HER NAME IS ALEXANDRA SANDERS AND SHE WORKS FOR THE STATE LIBRARY.

HER, HER JOB IS TO HANDLE ALL THE GRANTS THAT THE STATE LIBRARY ISSUES.

AND THIS WAS GRANT FUNDED BY THE STATE LIBRARY.

SO SHE'S HERE, SHE CAME TO VISIT TO LOOK AT IT.

AND SAMANTHA, WE'VE UM, EXCUSE ME, AMANDA, I'M SORRY, I DON'T WHAT I WAS THINKING.

UM, WE'VE, UM, ESTABLISHED CRITERIA FOR HOW WE'RE GONNA EVALUATE THIS 'CAUSE IT'S A PILOT.

MM-HMM.

.

SO WE HAVE ABOUT VOLUME AND RE UH, CUSTOMER SATISFACTION AND WE HAVE CRITERIA WE'RE GONNA USE TO THINK DID THIS WORK OR NOT, RIGHT? YEAH.

SO AS A PART OF THE FOCUS GROUPS, I HAD OUR TEAM CREATE A, A CUSTOMER OR A USER FEEDBACK SURVEY THAT WE'LL BE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT AND TRY TO GAIN SOME FEEDBACK FROM PEOPLE FROM, FOR EASE OF USE TO HOW LIKELY THEY WOULD TO CONTINUE AND ANY OTHER COMMENTS THAT THEY'D LIKE TO SHARE.

OKAY.

AND THEN IT IS ON OUR NETWORK AND IT'S IN OUR, WHAT WE CALL THE ILS, BUT OUR SOFTWARE SYSTEM.

SO I'LL GET REPORTS FROM IT AS WELL.

IT IS IN ESSENCE OUR SEVENTH BRANCH.

IT FUNCTIONS AS A BUILDING EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT A BUILDING.

SO I'LL GET THE SAME USAGE REPORTS THAT I GET FOR ALL THE OTHER BRANCHES.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN IT? YES, I CAN EXPLAIN IT.

SO A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY, WHAT ARE THEY GONNA, WHAT ARE THE LOCKERS? WHAT DO LIBRARY LOCKERS DO? SO LIBRARY LOCKERS ARE, UM, PICKUP LOCKERS.

SO IF YOU'VE EVER BOUGHT ANYTHING FROM AMAZON AND CHOSE AN AMAZON LOCKER TO RETRIEVE IT YES.

OR LOWE'S, A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE GONE TO LOWE'S AND ORDERED AHEAD.

SAME THING.

YOU WOULD ORDER A BOOK OR DVD ANY ITEM THROUGH OUR CATALOG.

AND INSTEAD OF SELECTING ONE OF OUR LOCATIONS, YOU WOULD SELECT THE LOCKER.

GOT IT.

THANK YOU.

OUR STAFF WOULD DELIVER IT.

YOU'LL GO PICK IT UP AND IT'S YOURS.

CAN THEY RETURN? THAT'S WHAT WE'RE WORKING ON.

OKAY.

ONE OF THE FEATURES THAT I THOUGHT WAS GREAT ON THE LOCKERS THEMSELVES WAS THAT TECHNOLOGY HAS ADVANCED SINCE THEY WERE FIRST, UM, DESIGNED AND IMPLEMENTED THAT THE LOCKERS COULD EITHER BE BORROWING OR RECEIVING, BUT IN ACTUALITY, THAT'S NOT WORKING THE WAY WE THINK IT SHOULD INTUITIVELY ENOUGH.

SO WE'RE LOOKING AT GETTING A, A BOOK RETURN , LIKE A, A NON-TECHNOLOGY BOOK RETURN, JUST TO MAKE IT SIMPLE.

TO THE LOCKERS BE DONE THROUGH THE BOOKMOBILE.

THEY'RE NOT BEING DONE BY THE BOOKMOBILE.

THEY ARE BEING DONE BY OUR COURIER AT THIS TIME.

SO WHILE, UM, HUDSON IS HIS NAME, WHILE HE'S OUT AND ABOUT DELIVERING ITEMS TO EACH OF OUR LIBRARIES, HE WILL STOP BY BURTON WELLS AND OKAY.

AND PUT ANY ITEMS THAT HAVE BEEN REQUESTED THERE.

YOU HAVE A LAUNCH DATE, YOU DON'T, WE ARE WORKING ON WHAT WOULD BE, WHAT WOULD MAKE MOST, WHAT MO WHAT WOULD MAKE THE MOST SENSE WITH THE HOLIDAYS AND MAKING SURE WE HAVE THE BOOK RETURN AND ALL THAT.

I HOPE YOU'LL TRY IT OUT.

AND LASTLY, USER EXPERIENCE.

UM, WE HAVE AN APP.

WE HAVE AN SC LENS APP.

IT'S AVAILABLE ON ALL MOBILE DEVICES, ANDROID AND APPLE.

YOU CAN GET IT THROUGH YOUR, UM, PLATFORM.

SO IF YOU HAVE AN APPLE DEVICE, IT'LL BE IN THE ISTORE.

IF YOU HAVE AN ANDROID DEVICE, IT'LL BE IN GOOGLE PLAY.

YOU CAN LITERALLY JUST TYPE SC LENS AND IT WILL SHOW UP.

YOU DOWNLOAD IT, PUT IN YOUR LIBRARY CARD ON THE FIRST TIME.

IF YOU ALLOW IT TO REMEMBER IT, YOU WON'T HAVE TO PUT IT IN AGAIN.

UM, BUT IT'S IN ESSENCE YOU'LL HAVE YOUR LIBRARY ACCOUNT IN YOUR POCKET.

YOU ALSO HAVE ACCESS TO THE CATALOG, SO YOU CAN, I YOU CAN PLACE ITEMS ON REQUEST RIGHT THROUGH THE APP.

ONE INTERESTING THING ABOUT THE APP IS THAT IT COMBINES BOTH OF YOUR ITEMS, UM, DIGITALLY AS WELL AS PHYSICAL.

SO I USE HOOPLA A LOT.

SO WHEN I DO ITEMS I HAVE CHECKED OUT, IT SHOWS ME THE DIGITAL ITEMS I HAVE CHECKED OUT THROUGH HOOPLA AS WELL AS THE PHYSICAL ITEMS I HAVE CHECKED OUT FROM THE LIBRARY.

IT'S KINDA INTERESTING, IT COMBINES YOUR DIGITAL CONTENT AND YOUR PHYSICAL PRINT COPIES IN ONE INTERFACE.

IT ALSO HAS, FOR SOMEONE LIKE ME, I'LL BE HONEST, I DON'T ALWAYS HAVE MY LIBRARY CARD WITH ME.

IT HAS A DIGITAL SCANNABLE, UM, CARD THAT YOU CAN JUST SCAN YOUR PHONE AND USE THAT DIGITAL VERSION OF YOUR CARD INSTEAD OF A PHYSICAL CARD.

YEAH.

YEAH.

SO YOU'RE ALL GONNA DOWNLOAD YOUR APP TONIGHT, OR RIGHT NOW , I HAVE A QUESTION.

UM, FOR PARENTS, ARE YOU ABLE TO UTILIZE THE APP AND PUT, FOR EXAMPLE, YOUR CHILDREN'S ACCOUNTS IN THERE? I HAVEN'T EXPLORED WHETHER OR NOT YOU CAN ADD MULTIPLE LIBRARY CARD ACCOUNTS IN ONE.

UM, BUT THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION.

I'M SURE I COULD FIGURE IT OUT, BUT YOU THOUGHT YOU MIGHT KNOW.

THANK YOU.

I'M SURE I COULDN'T.

SO , I'M JUST THINKING ABOUT NOT HAVING TO HAVE ALL OF THE PEOPLE'S

[00:30:01]

CARDS, ALL THE CARDS EVERY TIME WE GO TO THE LIBRARY, RIGHT? THAT WOULD BE A GREAT TOOL FOR A PARENT TO JUST HAVE EVERYTHING ON THE PHONE.

WELL, IF I FORGET TO EXPLORE IT AND YOU FIND OUT, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

IF IT'S NOT A FEATURE THAT'S CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, I'D LIKE TO BE ABLE TO PASS THAT ON FOR CONSIDERATION.

I AM VERY HAPPY TO SEE THIS ACTUALLY COME INTO EXISTENCE.

I WOULD SAY ONCE YOU DOWNLOAD IT, THEY WILL ASK YOU ONE TIME IF IT WANTS TO USE YOUR LOCATION INFORMATION.

I WOULD ALLOW IT TO SHARE SO THAT YOU CAN SEE MORE THAN JUST WHERE YOU PHYSICALLY ARE AT THAT MOMENT.

IT'S NOT GONNA TRACK YOU.

IT'S NOT AI TRACKING YOUR MOMENT, YOUR MOVEMENTS.

UM, IT'S NOT BIG BROTHER.

IT'S JUST GONNA GIVE YOU A BETTER EXPERIENCE.

AND THEN I'M, I'M SLOWLY GETTING TO THE END OF MY REPORT.

I DO WANT YOU TO KNOW SOME UPCOMING PROGRAMS AGAIN, EVEN THOUGH OCTOBER WAS BUSY, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER EVEN BUSIER.

SO I WANNA MAKE SURE YOU KNOW OF A COUPLE THINGS.

OUR BELOVED RAILROADERS MODEL TRAIN DISPLAY IS COMING BACK TO THE BEAUFORT BRANCH THIS CHRISTMAS.

IT'LL BE THERE DECEMBER THE 10TH THROUGH THE 14TH.

UH, OUR ST.

HELENA LIBRARY IS HOSTING FOR THE THIRD YEAR AN UNRATED CHESS TOURNAMENT THAT DRAWS A CROWD.

I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH OF IT IS THE CHESS OR THE PIZZA OR BOTH, BUT IT'S ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE A BUNCH OF YOUNG STUDENTS ENJOYING CHESS AND TOGETHERNESS.

IN BLUFFTON.

WE HAVE A PAJAMA PARTY ON NEW YEAR'S WITH, SO FOR KIDS, THEY CAN COME IN THEIR PJS, THEY HAVE CRAFTS ACTIVITIES ON DECEMBER 31ST AT 11:00 AM NOT 11:00 PM SO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO LIKE TO GO TO BED BEFORE THE BALL DROPS, OUR LOCAL HISTORY, UM, TEAM IS DOING A HISTORICALLY SPEAKING LECTURE ON BEYOND FALLS, THE UNTOLD STORIES OF THE FREEDOM SEEKERS ON THE PLANTER THAT'S GONNA BE HELD AT ST.

HELENA BRANCH ON DECEMBER THE 12TH.

IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN LOCAL HISTORY, PLEASE TAKE THE TREK OUT TO ST.

HELENA AND HEAR THIS AMAZING LECTURE.

LUKO IS GETTING INTO THE FESTIVE SPIRIT WITH SELFIE WITH SANTA ON DECEMBER THE 14TH.

THAT'S A SATURDAY.

THEY HAVE A SANTA, I DON'T, THEY TELL ME HE'S THE REAL ONE, BUT I'M NOT A HUNDRED PERCENT SURE.

BUT YOU CAN TAKE A SELFIE WITH HIM AND PARTICIPATE IN SOME GOODIES AND SOME ACTIVITIES AS WELL.

REMEMBER, WE HAVE SIX BRANCHES, SO I DIDN'T WANNA LEAVE ANYBODY OUT.

UM, OUR PORT ROYAL LIBRARY IS, UM, HAVING A DOUBLE FEATURE OF THE POLAR EXPRESS.

SINCE THEY HAVE A SMALLER FOOTPRINT, THEY WANNA MAKE SURE THEY CAN ACCOMMODATE AS MANY PEOPLE THAT WANT TO PARTICIPATE.

SO THEY'RE HAVING TWO DIFFERENT SHOWINGS OF THE POLAR EXPRESS AND RELATED ACTIVITIES.

ONE'S AT 10 30 ON DECEMBER THE 14TH AND A SECOND SHOWING LATER THAT AFTERNOON.

AND THEN HILTON HEAD, UM, BASED ON COMMUNITY FEEDBACK, THEY LOVE MAKING CRAFTS OUT OF OYSTER SHELLS.

SO WE'RE GONNA HAVE OYSTER SHELL SANTAS THANK YOU ON DECEMBER 9TH AND 12TH.

SO LIBRARIES ARE MORE THAN BOOKS, UM, BUT WE ALSO HAVE A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOU TO GET ENGAGED IN THE COMMUNITY.

AND THAT IS THE CONCLUSION OF MY REPORT.

, THANK YOU.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

UM, THANK YOU.

I I'M IMPRESSED WITH PORT ROYAL.

I THINK THEY'VE JUST JUMPED IN AND DONE A FABULOUS JOB.

JUST, THEY'VE JUST BLENDED IN, LIKE THEY'VE BEEN THERE FOREVER.

SO, UH, THANK YOU TO THE, TO THE LIBRARIANS THAT ARE OVER THERE, THE STAFF.

UM, OUR NEXT,

[VIII. Library Director’s Financial Report:]

UH, FEATURE WILL BE THE FINANCE REPORT.

JOE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO GIVE THE FINANCE REPORT? YES, I'D LIKE TO GIVE THE FINANCE REPORT.

IT WON'T BE AS COLORFUL OR AS ENTERTAINING AS WHAT YOU'VE JUST SEEN AND HEARD, BUT HERE IT IS.

NONETHELESS, UH, AMANDA HAS BEEN GOOD ENOUGH TO PUT THESE UP ON THE SCREEN.

SO, UH, WE CAN LOOK AT IT IN THAT WAY.

TO MAKE LIFE EASY, I'M GONNA PRESENT IT REALLY FROM HERE RATHER THAN AT THE PODIUM BECAUSE AT THIS POINT, WE'RE ONE THIRD OF THE WAY THROUGH THE FISCAL YEAR.

FOUR MONTHS IN, IT'S GOING TO BE A VERY SIMPLE, STRAIGHTFORWARD REPORT.

UH, SO WE CAN TAKE IT FROM THERE.

AND WE'LL DO THIS IN A NORMAL ORDER THAT WE, THAT WE LOOK AT THESE EVERY, UH, AT EVERY ONE OF OUR MEETINGS HERE.

AND STARTING OFF ON, ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE, TOP LEFT HAND SIDE, YOU SEE THAT WE'VE RECEIVED OUR FIRST INSTALLMENT OF STATE AID LOTTERY FUNDS, 117,000.

THIS BEAR IN MIND, WE HAVE THREE MORE INSTALLMENTS TO GO.

SO WE'LL GET THREE TIMES 117,000, YOU KNOW, ABOUT ABOUT $351,000.

YET THROUGHOUT THE YEAR HERE, WE HAVE SPENT YEAR TO DATE OUT OF THE 117 37,600, WHICH GIVES US OVER $79,000 INDICATED TO BE SPENT AS YET.

UH, AND YOU'LL SEE THAT $37,000 NUMBER REPEATED ON THE MATERIALS REPORT, WHICH SHOULD COME IN JUST A FEW MINUTES

[00:35:01]

HERE ON OUR IMPACT FEES.

AND AGAIN, WE'RE LOOKING AT THE OLD SYSTEM, NEW SYSTEM OF IMPACT FEES AND, AND THE RIGHT.

AND THE CENTER COLUMN HERE IS THE OLD IMPACT FEE ARRAIGNMENT, WHICH WE HAD OUR, OUR SIX DIFFERENT DISTRICTS HERE.

AND THIS TOTAL IS FOUR 4.2 MILLION.

AND ON, ON THE NEW IMPACT FEE DISTRICT, WHICH IS REALLY THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH OF THE BROAD, WE HAVE ALMOST 500,000.

SO TOGETHER WE'RE AT $4.7 MILLION IN TERMS OF IMPACT FEES AND METS LEAVES US IN A VERY, VERY COMFORTABLE STATE HERE.

UM, DURING THIS REPORTING PERIOD, WE HAD RECEIPTS IN BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH DISTRICTS OF OVER 47,000.

AND WE HAD ONE SINGLE EXPENDITURE, WHICH YOU SEE HERE IN THE BEAUFORT PORT, WHILE A SECTION IN THE CENTER COLUMN HERE, $9,700.

AND THAT WAS FOR AN EXTERIOR, THE, THE EXTERIOR BOOK RETURN OVER AT THE PORT ROYAL LIBRARY.

OKAY, NOW STILL OFF ON THE ZEN.

NOW WE HAVE 4.7 MILLION OUT THERE.

WE HAVE ENCUMBRANCES, WHICH IS TO SAY IDENTIFIED FUNDS, FUNDS THAT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED ON THE END OF COUNTY CAPITAL REPORT OF ABOUT $2.3 MILLION.

AND THAT, AND THAT INCLUDES, UM, AN OBLIGATION FOR THE PRITCHARD LIBRARY.

THREE QUARTERS OF A MILLION DOLLARS OUT THERE.

BLUFF IN PHASE TWO FOR THIS FACILITY HERE, ABOUT 800,000 IN HILTON HEAD LIBRARY RENOVATION, $800,000.

UM, WE HAVE ONE OUTSTANDING INVOICE, AND THAT IS FOR A SCANNER, FLATBED SCANNER FOR THE PORT WELL LIBRARY.

AND THAT'S ABOUT $1,800 THERE.

SO WHEN WE TAKE A LOOK AT THIS, WE ARE PRETTY WELL SITUATED ON IMPACT FEES, 4.7 MILLION.

UM, AND ALSO LOOKING GOOD ON THE STATE AID LIBRARY SIDE HERE.

UM, ON THE SPECIAL TRUST FUNDS HERE, WE HAD MOVEMENT OF ABOUT 150 THOU $150.

WE HAD IMPACT, WE HAD INTEREST ON THE ENDOWMENT, AND WE HAD ALSO SOME MATERIALS, SOME DOLLARS SPENT FOR BEAUFORT COUNTY, UH, DISTRICT COLLECTION THERE.

SO ON THIS SIDE, WE'RE LOOKING PRETTY GOOD.

AND THEN, AND IF WE COULD MOVE OVER TO THE NEXT SECTION THERE, WHICH IS REALLY OUR .

THANK YOU.

I HAVE ONE DISTRICT, I HAVE ONE QUESTION.

THE IMPACT FEE, YOU SAID OF $4 MILLION, RIGHT? IS THAT AFTER BUYING THE, UM, THE LAND PROPERTY SITE? YEAH, THE, THE NEW SITE FOR A NEW LIBRARY, YEAH.

THERE'S ALREADY BEEN $2 MILLION SPENT FOR THE LAND THERE.

AND THIS 4 MILLION IS AFTER? THAT'S AFTER THAT, YES.

WOW.

YES.

SO I SAY WE ARE IN, WE ARE IN VERY GOOD SHAPE.

YES.

WE'RE VERY COMFORTABLE HERE NOW.

ANYTHING ELSE THERE? OKAY.

OKAY.

SO WE ARE, NEXT PAGE.

HERE IS REALLY OUR, OUR BUDGET HERE.

AS I SAID, WE ARE THREE QUARTERS OF THE WAY THROUGH THE FISCAL ONE THIRD, ONE THIRD OF THE WAY THROUGH THE FISCAL YEAR.

UM, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM HERE AND YOU SEE OPERATING AND PERSONNEL AND OPERATING LINE OFF TO THE FAR RIGHT HAND SIDE, 31,000, 31%.

SO WE ARE 33% WAY THROUGH THE YEAR.

WE SPENT 31% OF OUR TOTAL BUDGET HERE.

UM, AND AS YOU CAN EXPECT, WE'VE SPENT 31% OF OUR PERSONNEL LINE AND 33% OF OPERATING EXPENSES IN THE PERSONNEL LINE.

THE DEFICIT THERE IS REALLY VACANCIES THAT HAVE BEEN OCCURRED OVER TIME.

UM, WE ARE VERY GOOD AT THIS POINT.

NOTHING REALLY JUMPS OUT.

WE'VE DISCUSSED THIS IN, IN OUR, UM, IN OUR SHORT FINANCE COMMITTEE MEETING.

BUT A COUPLE THINGS THAT I, THAT DESERVE MENTIONED HERE, UM, PURCHASES IN SEPTEMBER, WE HAD $964 FOR PRINTING FOR THE NEW PROMOTION OF BOOKMARKS.

AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE SEEN THOSE, BUT THOSE ARE VERY GOOD.

UH, MY FAVORITE BOOKMARK IS ONE THAT SAYS, AT THIS POINT I WENT, I FELL ASLEEP, .

SO THESE ARE VERY GOOD, VERY, VERY ATTENTION GATHERING.

UM, WE HAD, UH, $1,300 FOR LIKE UNIFORM SHIRTS FOR THE STAFF, AND $940 FOR TRAINING, SENDING FOUR EMPLOYEES TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE.

SO THAT'S WHERE WE ARE IN TERMS OF THE, UM, THE BUDGET ITSELF IN SHORT, 33% THROUGH THE YEAR, 31% SPENT.

SO WE'RE IN COMFORTABLE SHAPE.

AND IF WE COULD JUMP OVER TO THE LAST REPORT, WHICH IS THE MATERIALS REPORT.

AND YOU'LL SEE AGAIN, FOUR MONTHS TO THE YEAR WE SPENT

[00:40:01]

172,000 AND PICKING UP THE CONTINUITY OF NUMBERS FROM THE EARLIER REPORTS THERE.

STATE AID, YOU'LL SEE THE 37,600 THERE COUNTY FUNDS, 129,000 SPENT FOR THE FOUR MONTHS.

THE MAJOR EXPENDITURE IS REALLY HOOPLA, $118,000.

AND YOU TAKE, AND IF YOU WERE TO GO BACK AND TAKE A, A HARD LOOK AT THE LIBRARY DIRECTOR'S REPORT ON CIRCULATION, THERE WERE ABOUT 50,000 ITEMS CIRCULATED IN OCTOBER, AND OVER 20,000 OF THOSE WERE HOOPLA.

SO REALLY HOOPLA IS A MAJOR, MAJOR ACTIVITY HERE.

UM, AND WE'VE SEEN THAT FOR THE FULL YEAR AND IT REALLY POINTS ITSELF OUT IN, IN THIS REPORT HERE.

UM, WHEN WE TAKE A LOOK AT WHERE WE WERE A YEAR AGO AT THIS POINT IN TIME, WE SPENT 188,000.

SO WE'RE CONSISTENTLY SPENT.

A LOT OF THIS IS REALLY TIMING WHEN BOOK PURCHASES COME DUE, WHEN LEASE RENEWALS COME DUE.

AND IF WE TAKE A LOOK AT OUR FULL YEAR RESOURCES, WHICH IS REALLY THE REMAINING AND 350,000 THAT WE HAVE IN STATE AID, THE REMAINING MATERIAL BUDGET THAT WE HAVE HERE, WE'RE LOOKING AT A FULL YEAR POTENTIAL SPEND OF ABOUT 925,000.

AND AGAIN, THAT'S TIMING.

AND THAT WILL COME IN THE REMAINING EIGHT MONTHS OF THIS YEAR.

SO THAT WRAPS UP THE VERY SIMPLE AND STRAIGHTFORWARD FINANCE REPORT, AND IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS, WE'LL DO WHAT WE CAN TO ADDRESS THEM.

DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? NOTHING.

OKAY.

NO.

WELL, THANK YOU, JOE.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

UH, UH, TO GO WITH THE REST OF

[IX. Committee Reports:]

THE COMMITTEE REPORTS, UH, POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.

TRACY, IS THERE ANYTHING? NO.

OKAY.

NO, WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING YET.

UM, NEXT PAGE.

UH, JANET, STRATEGIC PLANNING, NOTHING TO REPORT.

OKAY.

AND WHEN ARE WE, WHEN ARE WE LOOKING AT THAT AGAIN? NEXT YEAR.

UM, A YEAR OR TWO.

A YEAR OR TWO.

OKAY.

UM, SO REQUEST FOR RECONSIDERATION COMMITTEE.

IS THERE ANYTHING, NOTHING TO CONSIDER? THAT'S GREAT.

UH, BERNIE LIBRARY FACILITIES.

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO REPORT? NO.

KIND OF QUIET, BUT, UH, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY I GET A LOT OF FEEDBACK ON THE NEW LIBRARY IN PORT ROYAL.

YES.

YEAH.

UH, I HAPPY HAVE NOTHING TO DO IN THE AFTERNOON, SO I COME TO ME, THEY KNOW I'M A TRUSTEE AND ALL THAT.

THANK YOU.

I I'M IMPRESSED WITH PORT ROYAL TOO.

I THINK, UM, AMANDA, YOU DID A FABULOUS JOB PUTTING THAT TOGETHER AS, AND HAS GREAT STAFF.

AND I THINK WE'RE DOING, I THINK IT'S GREAT.

IT'S A GREAT, UH, EXAMPLE FOR OUR FUTURE LIBRARY, I THINK.

THANK YOU.

UM, OUR WHAT? OH, OUR LIAISONS.

UM, FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY.

BRENDA IS NOT HERE.

UM, DOES ANYONE HAVE A REPORT FROM BUFORT? I CAN TELL YOU THAT THEY HELD THEIR, UM, BOOK SALE, UM, ON THE FIRST WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER.

SEEMED TO BE WELL ATTENDED.

I DON'T HAVE NUMBERS FROM THEM YET, BUT IN TERMS OF HOW MUCH MONEY THEY WERE ABLE TO RAISE.

BUT IT DID, THEY HAD GREAT WEATHER.

THEY HAD GREAT BOOKS TO BE BOUGHT, SO I HOPING FOR AN EXCELLENT TURNOUT.

UM, THEY WILL NEXT MEET TOMORROW AFTERNOON AT FOUR O'CLOCK AT THE BEAUFORT BRANCH LIBRARY.

GREAT.

OKAY.

THANK YOU.

THANK YOU.

UM, BLUFFTON, ROSALIE, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING FROM BLUFFTON? YES.

UM, LAST SATURDAY WE HAD A PRESENTATION IN THE BLUFFTON LIBRARY OF TWO AUTHORS, LOCAL AUTHORS.

THEY WERE, UM, MYSTERY WRITERS.

AND UNFORTUNATELY THERE WEREN'T TOO MANY PEOPLE THERE 'CAUSE IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY AND EVERYBODY MUST HAVE BEEN OUTSIDE.

BUT THE PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE WERE VERY INTERESTED IN BEING AUTHORS AS WELL.

AND THEY WANTED TO GET INFORMATION FROM THE AUTHORS AS WHAT THEY NEED TO DO.

AND THE AUTHORS SAID THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO READ, READ, READ.

AND THAT HELPS YOU IF YOU WANT TO BE AN AUTHOR.

AND WHAT THEY WROTE WERE LIKE A SERIES.

SO IF YOU BOUGHT THEIR BOOK, THERE WAS LIKE ONE AFTER ANOTHER AFTER ANOTHER, AND THERE WERE LIKE FOUR IN A SERIES.

AND IF YOU BOUGHT ONE, THEN YOU'D WANNA BUY THE NEXT ONE BECAUSE YOU'D WANNA KNOW HOW DID THINGS TURN OUT.

AND THEY, THEY SPOKE ABOUT HOW THEY SEPARATED

[00:45:01]

IT AND DID IT IN SUCH A WAY.

SO WHEN THE, THE BOOK THAT YOU WERE READING ENDED, IT KIND OF LEFT YOU WITH A DESIRE TO GET THE NEXT BOOK TO FIND OUT HOW SOME THINGS WORKED OUT.

THERE WAS, UM, I DON'T REMEMBER THE AUTHOR'S NAMES, BUT IT WAS A MALE AND A FEMALE AUTHOR, AND THEY WERE VERY GOOD AND, AND THEY WERE VERY, UM, WILLING TO SPEAK TO THE PEOPLE TO SEE IF THEY COULD BE OF HELP TO THEM IN ANY WAY.

AND THEY'RE ALSO VERY CONCERNED ABOUT, UH, RAISING MONEY AND DOING BOOK SALES.

IT'S GOOD THIS TIME OF YEAR BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

UM, I WAS AT THE HILTON HEAD LIBRARY MEETING AND, UH, THEY HAD THEIR, UH, BIRTHDAY PARTY ON NOVEMBER 6TH, WHICH WAS QUITE SUCCESSFUL.

I WASN'T ABLE TO GET THERE FOR THAT.

UM, THE OTHER THING IS, UM, THERE IS, THERE IS A, UH, IN, IN PALMETTO HALL, THERE'S SIX BOOK CLUBS AND SOME OF THEM GOT TOGETHER AND IN MEMORY OF SOMEONE WHO WAS A REGULAR BOOK CLUB MEMBER AND A, A VOLUNTEER AT THE LIBRARY, UM, THEY DONATED A BENCH.

AND I HAVE TO SAY IT'S IN RIGHT IN THE FRONT.

EVERY TIME I WALK PAST THERE IS SOMEBODY ON THAT BENCH.

I AM AMAZED THERE'S ALWAYS SOMEONE, BECAUSE WE HAD A BENCH OVER ON THE OTHER SIDE AND I, I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT WAS THERE.

BUT THIS, WE'VE PUT THIS RIGHT IN THE FRONT AND, AND SO WE, WE THANK THOSE PEOPLE WHO DONATE IT, NUMBER ONE.

AND IF YOU WANNA DO SOMETHING NICE FOR THE LIBRARY, DONATE A BENCH BECAUSE IT'S VERY WELL APPRECIATED.

, TALK TO ME FIRST.

OH, YEAH, .

I KNOW.

I'M ALWAYS LOOKING FOR DONATIONS AND SHE SAYS, NO, IT'S NOT THAT.

JUST, YEAH, WE'D LOVE TO ADVISE.

OH YES, OF COURSE.

DON'T SHOOT ME LATER, .

ALL RIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

ALL RIGHT, NEXT, UH, OH, AND THE LIBRARY FOUNDATION, UH, THEY'RE WORKING ON THEIR ASK LETTER.

SO, AND ALSO THEY HAVE A NEW MEMBER, THEY HAD HAVE A NEW, UM, UH, MEMBER, UH, DEBORAH HUTTON, AND SHE IS FROM SEA PINES.

SO, UM, SHE IS, HAS A GIFT FOR MARKETING.

SO I THINK THAT SHE WILL DO VERY WELL WITH THAT GROUP.

UH, IS THERE ANY OLD BUSINESS? IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE? NO.

ANY OLD BUSINESS? NO.

ANY NEW, WE HAVE SOME NEW BUSINESS.

THE NEW

[XI. New Business:]

BUSINESS, FIRST OF ALL, UH, YOU WERE GIVEN THE LIBRARY OR THE, UM, HOLIDAY CLOSINGS FOR 2025.

DID YOU LOOK THAT OVER TO SEE IF THERE'S ANY, UH, THEN I ALSO INCLUDED THE BACK PAGE OF YOUR PACKET IS A CALENDAR OF ALL OF 2025.

SO IF YOU WANTED TO KIND OF SEE WHERE THESE DATES FALL.

UM, SO OKAY.

WITH THOSE DATES, WE DON'T HAVE ANY CONFLICT.

I DON'T KNOW.

I'LL CHECK IT OUT WHEN I GET HOME AND IF THERE'S A PROBLEM, I'LL, UM, I, AND AT THIS POINT I THINK WE'RE GOING TO, UM, VOTE TO ACCEPT THEM.

CAN I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THOSE? UH, I THINK I CHECK THOSE.

I THINK I CHECK FOR THE JEWISH HOLIDAYS.

I'M PRETTY SURE.

OKAY.

BERNIE, UH, MOVES THAT WE ACCEPT THE DATES FOR NEXT YEAR FOR THE CLOSING DATES FOR THE LIBRARY FOR 2025.

SECOND.

SECOND.

IT'S JANET.

UH, ALL IN FAVOR? OPPOSED? OKAY.

UM, THE, THE OTHER ONE IS THE, UM, OUR MEETING DATES AND OUR MEETING DATES, UM, FOR OUR LIBRARY TRUSTEE MEETINGS.

UM, ARE THERE ON THE SHEET WE ARE GOING TO BE JUST AT BUFORD AND AT BLUFFTON.

UM, I, I THINK IT, IT'S IN, IN LIGHT OF THE TRAFFIC AND ALL THE PROBLEMS GETTING TO PLACES, I THINK WE'RE GONNA SHORTEN THAT.

THE, THE PLACES THAT WE'RE GONNA GO.

UM, THE ONLY THING, ALL OF 'EM ARE GOOD EXCEPT FOR JANUARY.

UM, IT FALLS TOO CLOSE TO WHEN THE REPORTING DATE IS FROM THE INVOICES, IS THAT CORRECT? SO WE'D LIKE TO MOVE THAT TO THE NEXT DAY, TO THE NEXT TUESDAY, WHICH IS, I BELIEVE THE 15TH WAS MY CALENDAR.

THERE ARE TWO DATES THAT BE THE 22ND JANUARY 15TH, AND JANUARY SIX AND JULY 16TH, OR THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF THE MONTH.

BUT YOUR SECOND WEDNESDAY DUE TO WHERE IN THOSE MONTHS, I JUST DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET YOU ACCURATE INFORMATION.

MM-HMM, .

SO, SO THE DATES ON THE SHEET ARE RIGHT OR THEY'RE WRONG? YES, THESE ARE CORRECT.

SHE'S JUST POINTING OUT THAT FOR JANUARY AND JULY, IT'S THE THIRD WEDNESDAY INSTEAD OF THE SECOND WEDNESDAY.

OH, THE DATES WERE, GOT IT.

GOOD TO KNOW.

OKAY.

SAME THING.

PRETTY.

AND THEN, UM,

[00:50:01]

THE, UM, AND THAT IT, IT ALSO TELLS YOU WHERE IT'LL BE BUFORD OR, UH, BLUFFTON.

SO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THOSE.

ALL RIGHT, BERNIE.

I SECOND, SECOND IT.

UM, IN FAVOR.

A OPPOSED? OKAY.

ROUNDABOUT THOUGH.

OH MY GOSH.

ROUNDABOUT.

THE ROUNDABOUT.

I THINK THAT'S ALL.

UM, OUR NEXT MEETING

[XII. Announcements:]

THEN WILL BE IN, WAS IT BUFORD? I DON'T HAVE MY CALENDAR HERE.

OH, YES.

HERE IT'S, OH, THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE ON THE RIGHT.

JANUARY 15TH.

JANUARY 15TH.

OH YES, THIS ONE.

OKAY.

JANUARY 15TH IN BUFORD.

UM, ALRIGHT, IS THERE, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE YES, I HAVE TWO ANNOUNCEMENTS.

OKAY.

ONE IS IN LAST NIGHT'S COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING, UM, THEY AUTHORIZED AN ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY CLOSURE FOR THIS YEAR.

SO WE, OUR LIBRARIES AND ALL COUNTY DEPARTMENTS WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 23RD, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24TH, AND WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 25TH.

SO THEY ADDED THE MONDAY AS AN ADDITIONAL, UM, COUNTY EMPLOYEE HOLIDAY.

OKAY.

SO JUST BY WAY OF INFORMATION.

AND THEN ALSO I'VE PRINTED OUT, UM, A CARD SIZE INVITATION THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE RECEIVED BY EMAIL FROM BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.

THEY'RE HOSTING A HOLIDAY DROP IN FOR MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE SERVING RIGHT NOW ON BEAUFORT COUNTY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.

SO I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO RSVP TO THE EMAIL ADDRESS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE, UM, INVITATION.

YOU HAVE UNTIL NOVEMBER THE 29TH TO RSVP.

BUT THIS WOULD BE, I JUST WANNA ENCOURAGE YOU TO ATTEND IF YOU'RE ABLE TO SO THAT YOU CAN MEET OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE SERVING ON BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS AND SOME OTHER COUNTY DEPARTMENTS.

YOU CAN SEE THAT WE ARE GONNA BE THERE.

PARKS AND RECREATION, HUMAN RESOURCES, PASSIVE PARKS, NEXUS CARE, WHAT USED TO BE CALLED ALCOHOL AND DRUG, AND ALSO SOLID WASTE AND RECYCLING.

SO IT'S A DROP IN FOUR TO 6:00 PM AT THE, UM, COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING.

WELL, AT THE COURTYARD ADJACENT TO THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATION BUILDING.

I'LL BE THERE, ILEANA WILL BE THERE.

UM, SO WE'D LOVE TO SEE YOU OVER THE COURSE OF THOSE TWO HOURS.

UM, ONE OTHER ANNOUNCEMENT, UH, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT DOING A RETREAT.

UM, THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE CAN, UH, PROBABLY BENEFIT FROM UNDERSTANDING HOW TO, HOW TO FUNCTION BETTER AS A BOARD.

SO I'M TALKING ABOUT, I'M THINKING ABOUT DOING THAT MAYBE IN FEBRUARY, MAYBE THE BEGINNING OF FEBRUARY, MIDDLE OF FEBRUARY.

SO IF ANY OF YOU WOULD EMAIL ME ANYTHING THAT YOU'RE, ANY DATE THAT YOU'RE CONCERNED ISN'T GONNA WORK OR WHAT, WHAT WOULD BE BETTER, YOU KNOW, IF, IF FRIDAY'S BETTER THAN A MONDAY OR AFTERNOONS, OR I THINK MORNINGS ARE PROBABLY PRETTY, PRETTY EASY TO GET TO.

UM, SO, UH, SO IF YOU GIMME SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WHEN WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO DO THAT, AND THEN I'LL PUT TOGETHER SOME DATES AND SEND 'EM OUT TO YOU.

AND THEN WE'LL, I'LL PUT TOGETHER WHAT WE'RE, WE HAVE A LITTLE COMMITTEE, THEN WE'RE GONNA WORK ON THAT AND COME UP WITH THE, UH, THE PROGRAM.

OKAY.

ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT.

CAN I HAVE A MOTION TO ADJOURN, BERNIE? OKAY.

AND SECOND.

I SECOND.

OKAY.

JOE, SECOND.

ALL IN FAVOR? AYE.

OPPOSED? ALRIGHT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THANK YOU.

THANKS FOR WATCHING BC TV.

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN BEAUFORT COUNTY.

UH, THE BEAUFORT COUNTY OFFICE RECYCLING PROGRAM, UH, CAME ABOUT IN 2010, UH, THROUGH AN ENERGY GRANT, UH, THAT THE COUNTY GOT TO, UH, SAVE ENERGY AND, AND IT ALLOWED US TO PURCHASE A VEHICLE AND ESTABLISH A POSITION FOR SOMEBODY TO GO AROUND AND PICK UP ALL THE OFFICE RECYCLING.

I, I THINK IF YOU LOOK AT THE TONNAGE NUMBERS, UM, WHEN WE FIRST STARTED THE PROGRAM, WE HAVE GROWN FROM, YOU KNOW, BASICALLY ZERO TO,

[00:55:01]

TO 200 TONS A YEAR, WHICH IS HUGE.

UM, YOU KNOW, THAT THAT TRANSLATES TO ABOUT $10,000 IN RECYCLING AND SAVED DISPOSAL FEES.

BUT IT'S NOT JUST THAT, IS THAT, YOU KNOW, RECYCLING IS NOT JUST ABOUT SAVING MONEY, IT'S ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY AND IT'S ALSO ABOUT THE JOBS THAT IT CREATES.

IT'S AN ECONOMIC VALUE.

IN OUR STATE, WE HAVE APPROXIMATELY A HUNDRED STOPS, AND THAT THAT'S HUGE.

AND ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT WE'VE JUST RECENTLY ADDED, THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND THE EMS SUBSTATIONS.

SO WE STARTED IN THE ADMINISTRATION BUILDING AND NOW WE'VE BRANCHED OUT IF IT'S IMPORTANT FOR OUR, OUR EMPLOYEES TO RECOGNIZE WHY IS IT THAT, UH, YOU SORT THE RIGHT THINGS.

UH, WE'VE ONLY GOT ONE PERSON DOING THIS, UH, IN THE COUNTY GOING AROUND AND PICKING UP THIS MATERIAL.

IT COMES BACK HERE.

UH, IF IT'S NOT SORTED OR IF WE PUT THE WRONG ITEMS IN A CONTAINER, IT TAKES MORE TIME, MORE LABOR, AND EVEN CAN CONTAMINATE ITEMS TO THE POINT THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE THROWN AWAY VERSUS BEING RECYCLED.

WE NEED AS MUCH HELP AS POSSIBLE AS FAR AS SEPARATING THE RECYCLING.

UH, PLASTIC GOES WITH PLASTIC BY ITSELF, CANS BY ITSELF.

UH, MIXED PAPER CAN ALL BLEND IN TOGETHER, BUT YOUR SHREDS, IT KIND OF NEEDS TO BE CONTAINED IN A BAG.

YOUR NEWSPAPER SHOULD BE SEPARATED FROM THE MIXED PAPER.

ALL RECYCLING PROGRAMS, WHETHER IT'S ON YOUR CURB OR AT THE OFFICE, YOU DO NOT PUT ANY KIND OF FOOD CONTAMINATION IN THERE.

UM, WE ASK PEOPLE WHEN THEY PUT THEIR BOTTLES OR CANS IN THERE TO EMPTY THE MATERIAL.

THEY DON'T HAVE TO SCRUB IT.

AND EVERYBODY WANTS TO RECYCLE STYROFOAM.

AND UNFORTUNATELY IT IS NOT RECYCLABLE IN OUR SYSTEM RIGHT NOW.

SO THAT MATERIAL HAS TO GO INTO THE TRASH.

CAN.

WE ALSO ASK EMPLOYEES TO FLATTEN ANY CARDBOARD AND STORE IT OUT OF THE WAY SO NOBODY TRIPS OVER IT.

AND THEN IF SOMEBODY HAS A LARGE LOAD TO GIVE US A CALL AT THE OFFICE AND WE WILL HAVE A SPECIAL PICKUP TO MANAGE THAT MATERIAL.

WE DO NOT, UM, TAKE ANY KIND OF GLASS IN OUR SYSTEM AND THAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE.

WE NEED TO RECYCLE GLASS AT HOME.

IF YOU HAVE A CURBSIDE SYSTEM OR YOU USE A CONVENIENCE CENTER, PLEASE BRING YOUR GLASS, UH, THROUGH THOSE SYSTEMS. WHEN AN EMPLOYEE AT THEIR DESK HAS A PIECE OF PAPER THAT THEY KNOW IF THEY CAN'T, WE DO SUGGEST THAT PEOPLE, YOU TRY TO USE THE OTHER SIDE.

SO IT'S USED TWICE.

AND THEN ONCE THEY'VE USED UP THE PAPER, THEY CAN PLACE IT INTO THE RECYCLING BIN AND THEN THEY WILL TAKE IT TO THE CENTRAL LOCATION, WHICH MIGHT BE OUT IN THE HALL OR IN ANOTHER AREA OF THEIR, IF THEY'RE IN A BIG OFFICE WITH LOTS OF OTHER EMPLOYEES, THEY'LL PUT THEIR PAPER AND RECYCLABLES IN THE BIN IN THE CENTRAL BINS.

FROM HERE, I COLLECT ALL THE PAPER, MIXED PAPER SHREDS, THE CANS, THE BOTTLES AND EVERYTHING THAT'S RECYCLABLE.

WE THEN TAKE IT TO THE RECYCLING CENTER WHERE IT SEPARATED.

UM, WE HAVE A BILLER MACHINE THAT ACTUALLY COMPACTS THE MIXED PAPER TOGETHER WITH THE SHREDS.

WHEN THAT PRODUCTS IS FINISHED, UM, IT SHRINK WRAP, THE COUNTY IS ABLE TO TAKE THOSE ITEMS, PARTICULARLY PAPER AND CARDBOARD, AND SELL THOSE AND THAT REVENUE COMES BACK INTO THE GENERAL FUND.

SO EVERYTHING THAT OUR EMPLOYEES DO TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS PROGRAM GENERATES REVENUE, HELPS LOWER OUR COSTS, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE'RE SETTING THE EXAMPLE FOR OUR CITIZENS.

WE'RE TRYING TO TEACH, UH, THE CITIZENS TO THE, THE RIGHT THINGS TO DO, MAKE OUR COMMUNITY MORE SUSTAINABLE.

AND RECYCLING AND REDUCING WHAT WE PUT IN THE LANDFILLS IS ONE OF THE BEST WAY WE AS EMPLOYEES OF THE COUNTY CAN, UH, LEAD THE WAY FOR OUR CITIZENS AND BE AN EXAMPLE TO 'EM ON HOW TO RECYCLE.

AND THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN BEAUFORT COUNTY.
