CLOSED CAPTIONING PROVIDED BY BUFORT COUNTY

YOU START WITH THE INTRODUCTIONS.CARLOS K DISTRICT ATHLETIC DIRECTOR OF BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOLS.
UH, BRUCE JAGER, UH, SOUTH OF BROAD.
RON CAMPBELL, NORTH OF BROAD KAISER, SOUTH OF BROAD JANAE.
YOU WANNA INTRODUCE YOURSELF? JANA HAYES, NORTH OF BROAD.
ERIC BROWN PARK AND RECREATION DIRECTOR VAUGHN, ATHLETIC SUPERVISOR.
BILL, ASSISTANT COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR.
MR. GOINS? I'M FROM BUFORT AND WE'RE HERE TO, UH, OKAY.
UH, GAVIN MCS, TECH, BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH.
UH, SPECIAL RECREATION AND SPECIAL OLYMPICS.
WELL, THANKS EVERYBODY FOR BEING HERE.
ERIC, YOU HAD A STAFF MEETING RIGHT? PROCEEDING THIS.
SO ANYBODY WHO THINKS THAT THEY'RE JUST ALL HERE FOR THIS ONLY, WE HAD A STAFF MEETING, RIGHT? YES, SIR.
[4. Approval of Agenda]
FOR TODAY, UH, IN FRONT OF YOU.CAN SOMEONE, UH, GIVE ME A, UM, A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA? MOVED.
UH, I DON'T BELIEVE, DO WE HAVE ANYONE HERE FOR PUBLIC COMMENT? THAT'S THE SHORTEST PUBLIC COMMENT WE'VE HAD IN QUITE SOME TIME.
UM, WE HAVE A REVIEW AND APPROVAL
[6. Review and Approval of May Minutes – May 02, 2024 (backup)]
OF THE MAY MINUTES.HAS EVERYBODY HAD A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THESE? YES.
ENTERTAIN A MOTION TO APPROVE.
[7. Requests: Waiver of Rental Fees]
REQUEST WAIVER OF RENTAL FEES.UH, WE HAVE SOAR SPECIAL OLYMPICS.
HELLO? UM, WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT DOING IS AT SHELL POINT PARK, UH, WE'RE LOOKING AT STARTING A ADULT BOCCE PROGRAM FOCUSED PRIMARILY ON DDSN RESIDENTS.
UH, WE HAVE ALSO INVITED, UH, OUR GENERAL ATHLETES WHO LIVE IN THE BEAUFORT AREA TO COME OUT AS WELL.
SO, WEEKLY PROGRAM WOULD GO ONCE A WEEK ON TUESDAY MORNINGS FOR ONE HOUR 9:00 AM TO 10:00 AM IN THE MORNING, WOULD RUN FOR EIGHT OR NINE CONSECUTIVE WEEKS.
UH, WE GOT A DAY BUILDING THERE IN CASE THERE'S A WEATHER ISSUE.
UM, AND THE PARTICIPATION, THE, THE FOCUS OF THE PROGRAM IS TO TEACH, UH, ATHLETES NEW SKILLS, UH, PRIMARILY IN THE BOCCE, UH, WITH THE GAME OF BOCCE.
UH, THESE ATHLETES WOULD ALSO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE SEASON TO TRAVEL WITH US TO MYRTLE BEACH FOR THE SPECIAL OLYMPICS, UH, STATE COMPETITION, UH, WHICH WILL BE ON SEPTEMBER 14TH.
SO BOCCE IS A, UH, IS A, UH, A SPORT FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS? IT IS, YES, SIR.
CAN, CAN YOU, CAN, I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE DDSN ACRONYM, CAN YOU? UH, YEAH.
THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SOCIAL SERVICES.
SO THESE ARE, UH, OUR RESIDENTS WHO ARE IN GROUP HOMES AND ALSO AT, AT THEIR, UH, THEIR FACILITY, UH, IN BUFORT WOULD BE INVITED TO COME OUT AND PARTICIPATE.
VERY SIMILAR TO THE GROUP THAT CAME FOR THE PICKLEBALL PROGRAM THAT WE JUST DID THIS PAST SPRING.
AND WHAT, UM, WHAT, UH, PART OF THE FACILITIES, YOU JUST USE THE OPEN FIELD THERE.
[00:05:01]
YES, SIR.THERE'S AN AREA, UH, IN THE OPEN FIELD AND THERE ARE A COUPLE OF LARGE SHADE TREES.
WE WOULDN'T NEED A REAL BIG AREA.
THEY'RE JUST BASICALLY RIBBONS THAT, UH, YOU KNOW, YOU STAKE TO THE GROUND, SET THE COURTS UP.
UM, WE HAVE ALL THE EQUIPMENT, THE BALLS, THE BOCCE BALLS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
UH, WE WOULD RUN OUR PRACTICE FOR AN HOUR, UH, PICK EVERYTHING UP, UH, AND CLEAN UP ANY LITTER OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT WAS THERE AND, AND BE ON OUR WAY.
THERE'D BE NO LONG-TERM IMPACT TO THE PARK.
AND IT'S ONCE A WEEK FOR NINE WEEKS AND IT'S TWO HOURS FROM BEGINNING TO END? YEAH.
FOR SETUP AND, AND TEAR DOWN WOULD BE TWO HOURS.
AND I PRESUME THROUGH THE LAST MEETING THAT WE HAD, ERIC, THAT WE WORKED OUT INSURANCE OR WHATEVER, DO WE NEED INSURANCE FOR THIS ACTIVITY? OKAY.
WHAT'S THAT? IT'S NOT BEING USED OTHERWISE.
WELL, I WOULD SAY AT 8:30 AM ON A TUESDAY.
I WOULD THINK THAT WOULD BE, UH, THAT WOULD BE OKAY.
UM, DO YOU, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OF JIM? OKAY.
ANYBODY HAVE A MOTION? WE WOULD WAIVE THE FEE FOR THE ONE TWO HOUR FUN TIME PERIOD ON TUESDAYS.
FIRST OF ALL, WE WANNA THANK, UM, THE, FROM BEAUFORT TENNIS COMMUNITY.
WE ARE THOROUGHLY ENJOYING OUR NEW COURTS AND IT'S BEEN QUITE A, UH, RESURGENCE OF ACTIVITY.
UH, JUST TO KIND OF BRING EVERYBODY UP TO DATE, YOU KNOW, LARRY SHEPHERD HOLDS CLINICS THERE, AND ON SATURDAYS HE GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY WITH HIS YOUTH CLINICS.
AND OUR BEAUFORT TENNIS CLUB, AGAIN, HAS BEEN REENERGIZED AND WE'RE HOSTING, UM, MIXED DOUBLES EVENTS.
SO HERE TODAY THOUGH, WE'RE, UH, REPRESENTING SENIOR CITIZENS WHO ARE PASSIONATE CI CITIZENS WHO ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT TENNIS.
AND WE HAVE NOW HAVE ENOUGH WOMEN TOGETHER TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A-U-S-T-A OF THREE OH, RATED OVER 60, UM, UH, TEAM TO PLAY.
IN THIS COMING FALL, WE WOULD HAVE FOUR HOME MATCHES, AND THAT WOULD BE ON THREE COURTS.
AND BASICALLY, AS SENIOR CITIZENS, WE ARE REQUESTING THE WAIVER FOR THE COURT FEES.
UM, AND WE ALSO WANTED TO BRING MY, MY TENNIS MATE HERE WOULD LIKE TO ALSO BRING MAYBE SOME OTHER ADVANTAGES THAT WE SEE AS FOR BRINGING USTA AND GETTING THINGS, YOU KNOW, EVEN BIGGER, UH, DOWNTOWN IN BEAUFORT.
HEY, SO THE MATCHES, UM, WE HAVEN'T HAD USTA IN BEAUFORT, UH, FOR QUITE A WHILE.
MANY, MANY TEAMS, BUT WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIELD THE TEAM IN BEAUFORT.
SO WE'RE REALLY EXCITED TO REPRESENT BEAUFORT COUNTY.
AND IT'S OUR INTENTION THAT AT THE END OF THE SEASON, WE WOULD BE ABLE TO GO TO THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND REPRESENT BEAUFORT COUNTY, UM, AS THE USTA THREE OH OVER 60 TEAM.
UM, SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
YOU GET A BIG BANNER, BUT IT'LL REENERGIZE THE YOUNGER FOLKS AS WELL TO FIELD TEAMS IF THEY SEE THAT A TEAM IS NOW FIELDED AND IT'S REPRESENTING USTA.
AND YOU HAVE SUPPORTED US THROUGH WAIVING THE COURT FEE FOR THOSE FOUR HOME MATCHES.
THE NICE THING IS WE'RE ABLE TO PICK THE TIME SO WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT WE PICK THE TIME FOR THE MATCHES WHEN THEY'RE NOT UTILIZED MUCH.
AND IF YOU'VE EVER DRIVEN BY THE COURTS, YOU KNOW, PRETTY MUCH EVERY AFTERNOON THERE'S NOBODY THERE.
UM, THURSDAY, FRIDAY MORNINGS, NOT A LOT OF FOLKS THERE.
SO THAT WE COULD DEFINITELY UTILIZE THEM WHEN, UM, THERE'S NOT A LOT OF COUNTY UTILIZATION.
SO WE'RE LOOKING TO BUILD THIS IN THE YEARS TO COME SO THAT WE GET MORE USTA TEAMS, WE GET MORE PEOPLE INVOLVED.
THERE'S A SPRING, THERE'S A SUMMER, THERE'S A FALL.
UM, SO A LOT OF CAPABILITY TO EVEN USE THE COURTS MORE THAN WHAT THEY'RE BEING UTILIZED.
SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT AND WE WOULD LOVE IT IF YOU COULD WAIVE THAT FEE FOR US.
'CAUSE IT'S KINDA STEEP
UM, SO YOU'VE GOT FOUR MATCHES.
AND SO YOU WOULD, YOU WOULD BE USING THREE COURTS FOR WHAT PERIOD OF TIME? IT'S ABOUT TWO, TWO AND A HALF HOURS PER MATCH.
TWO, TWO AND A HALF HOURS PER MATCH.
[00:10:01]
TIME.SO WHAT, WHAT DOES THAT, SO WE'LL HAVE THREE QUARTS IN USE FOR TWO AND A HALF HOURS.
WE WOULD HOPE TO, WE'RE GONNA BEAT 'EM IN TWO HOURS.
BUT I, I PRESUME YOU COME OUT AND YOU WARM UP AND YOU DO WHATEVER AS WELL.
YOU JUST DON'T COME OUT AND WORK COLD.
SO I'M TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT THE TOTAL FEE FOR THIS WOULD BE.
UM, WHAT'S THAT? 600, $600 FOR THE ENTIRE OKAY.
AND, AND THE DATES ARE SPECIFIED ALREADY WHEN THEY SET THE SEASON? IT WILL BE, SO IT WILL BE BETWEEN SEPTEMBER THE END OF SEPTEMBER AND THE FIRST PART OF DECEMBER.
THEY HAVEN'T SET, WE THINK IT'S GONNA BE TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS OR WEDNESDAYS, AND THEN WE CAN SET THE TIME.
SO, SO AGAIN, IT'LL BE THREE DAYS ON THREE DIFFERENT, I MEAN THREE DIFFERENT WEEKS, OR WAS IT FOUR? FOUR FOUR.
FOUR TOTAL OF EIGHT MATCHES AND FOUR OF THOSE WOULD BE HOME MATCHES FOR US.
THAT'S WHY WE ARE REQUESTING FOR OKAY.
SO I'M JUST, I'M JUST TALKING ABOUT, I'M, I'M JUST TRYING TO DEFINE WHAT OUR COURTS AND, AND THIS IS THE BUFORT, UH, MAIN COURTS THAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT? YES.
SO YOU MAY HAVE ONE WEEK, WE, WE ARE AWAY.
THE NEXT WEEK WE WOULD BE AT HOME AND NEED THREE COURTS.
THE NEXT TWO WEEKS WE COULD BE AWAY.
SO THAT'S KIND OF HOW IT OPERATES.
UM, DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS? MY, MY QUESTION IS, IS THAT, UM, AS YOU HAD MENTIONED, THERE ARE, THERE IS A LOT OF ACTIVITY OVER HERE ON THIS SIDE OF THE BROAD.
AND, UM, I, I KNOW A LOT OF FOLKS WHO PLAY TENNIS AND, UM, AND THAT ARE INVOLVED IN ACTIVITIES SUCH AS THIS.
UM, USUALLY WHEN WE LOOK TO WAVE FEES FOR PEOPLE, UM, IT'S TYPICALLY NOT IN A SITUATION SUCH AS THIS, UM, NOT DUE TO AGE OR, UM, BECAUSE OUR TRAVEL TEAMS AND THINGS LIKE THAT, IT'S ALL SPACE AVAILABLE.
YOUR POINT, I THINK, IS THAT THERE IS SOME SPACE AVAILABLE, BUT, UM, REGARDLESS OF OUR AFFILIATION WITH WHATEVER ORGANIZATION, UH, OR GOVERNING BODY, WE PAID THE FEES.
SO THAT'S, I GUESS THAT'S THE ISSUE THAT I HAVE WITH THIS, UM, IS THAT, UM, THAT'S WHY WE HAVE A FEE LIST BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, WE NEED TO HAVE USER FEES AS A COUNTY.
UH, AND I THINK THAT, UH, IN MY CONVERSATIONS WITH THESE PEOPLE, OUR USER FEES ARE VERY REASONABLE FOR USING THE COURTS IN TERMS OF, I THINK IT'S $50 FOR, FOR THREE HOURS.
RIGHT? SO THAT'S THE ISSUE THAT, THAT I HAVE WITH IT.
I DON'T WANT TO SET A PRECEDENT HERE WHERE EVERYBODY CAN JUST COME AND WE'LL HAVE TO WAIVE FEES FOR, FOR THAT.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY OTHER THOUGHTS OR ANY THAT WAS, THAT WAS A HUNDRED PERCENT MY WORRY.
AND, AND I GUESS THE QUESTION WILL GO BACK TO YOU.
THERE'S A BUNCH OF TEAMS IN BLUFFTON THAT ARE USDA ALREADY.
AND THEY, DO YOU HAVE ANY AGREEMENTS LIKE THAT WITH ANY OTHER ORG, YOU KNOW, THAT ARE USD? WELL, THEY PLAY PRIVATELY, SO I DON'T KNOW.
UM, SO WE DON'T, YEAH, WE ARE, UH, NOT, WE DON'T BELONG TO A COUNTRY CLUB.
SO WE UTILIZE THE, AND WANNA SUPPORT THE DOWNTOWN COURTS, BUT, UM, IT IS AN EXPENSE.
I THINK TO HIS POINT, THAT WOULD BE THE HARD PART THOUGH, IS IF WE DO THAT, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN IT OPENS UP FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO START DOING THAT AS WELL.
THERE COULD BE ANY EXCEPTION, UM, MADE BASED ON THE SENIOR CITIZEN ARGUMENT.
Y YOU KNOW, I DON'T, UH, I DON'T, UH, I DON'T THINK SO, UH, TO BE HONEST.
UM, WHAT, WHAT ARE THE USES, WHAT, WHAT TYPE OF CAPACITY ARE THOSE COURTS USING? I MEAN, WE'VE SPENT A LOT OF MONEY REDOING THESE COURTS, AND THE INFERENCE I THINK THAT YOU MADE IS THAT THEY'RE NOT BEING USED.
I MEAN, BECAUSE, I MEAN, IS THAT WHAT WE SEE OR, I MEAN, WE'VE GOT A RESERVATION FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE KIND OF THING.
[*A portion of this video is without audio*]
[00:17:48]
I BASIS FOR THIS HAPPENING OR IN, IN HOPES THAT WE WOULD GET, YOU KNOW, GREATER USE OUT OF THE FACILITY FACILITIES.BUT I MEAN, I'M NOT OVERWHELMINGLY FOR THAT.
SO THAT'S, THAT'S A POSITION I COULD PROBABLY SUPPORT.
BUT DO I, THE PROBLEM, THE PROBLEM WITH THE AWARENESS THING IS IF IT DID PICK UP TRACTION.
I, I COULD SEE THAT IF WE SAY WE KNOW THERE'S NOT GONNA BE THAT WE DO SOME SORT OF A PARTIAL.
AND, AND AGAIN, IT'S NOT, IT'S NOT THAT, UH, I'VE, I'VE, I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THIS SUBJECT AND EVERYBODY WHO'S PLAYING TENNIS IN THESE EVENTS ARE PAYING TYPICALLY TO PLAY.
AND IN THE OTHER FACILITIES THAT THEY'RE USING, UM, THEY'RE EITHER PRIVATE CLUBS WHERE, AS YOU SAID, SOMEBODY, UH, UH, SPONSORS THEM OR, UM, THEY'RE DONE THROUGH, UH, UH, WELL THAT'S REALLY, OR US TENNIS OR WHATEVER OUT AT, UH, UH, I FORGOT THE NAME OF THE ENTITY THAT WORKS AT CHAPLAIN PARK.
SO A PARTIAL WAIVER WOULD CERTAINLY HELP.
I MEAN, WE WOULD BE JUST OVERJOYED TO, BECAUSE IT IS, IT, IT'LL EQUATE TO ABOUT $46 PER PERSON.
WE HAVE A ROSTER RIGHT NOW OF 16.
IT COULD GET SMALLER IF THE ROSTER'S SMALLER, OUR INDIVIDUAL EXPENSE GOES UP, IF IT'S STILL THE $50 PER COURT PER SESSION.
SO ANYTHING YOU CAN DO WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
DOES SOMEONE WANNA MAKE A MOTION? CARLOS? I'M INCLINED TO SUPPORT THE PARTIAL.
UM, I, I WOULD BE SUPPORTIVE OF A, OF A PARTIAL, UM, WAIVER, UM, AND THEM NOT HAVE TO PAY THE FULL DOLLAR AMOUNT.
UM, SO I'LL MAKE A MOTION TO, UH, UH, ALLOW THEM TO, UH,
[00:20:02]
USE REPORTS, UH, MAKING A, WHATEVER WE DETERMINE TO BE THAT PARTIAL PAYMENT FOR THE FACILITY, UM, USE OF THE FACILITY.DO YOU HAVE A, DO YOU HAVE A 75%, 50%? DO YOU HAVE A UH, I WOULD GO 50.
I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE PORTION YOU WERE PAYING
UM, I WOULD, UH, I WOULD ADD TO THAT, THAT IT NEEDS TO BE AT A TIME, AS YOU SAID, THAT MEETS THE, UH, REQUIREMENTS AND, AND DOES NOT IMPACT ANYBODY ELSE.
AND ALSO I WOULD ADD THAT IT'S FOR THE BASIS OF YOU ALL, UH, TRYING TO EXPAND TENNIS.
UH, AND THIS WOULD BE A ONE TIME THING.
UM, SO WHAT KIND OF IMPACT WOULD THIS HAVE ON PARKS AND RECREATION? WOULD THEY HAVE TO, WOULD THEY BE INVOLVED IN ANY ASSISTANCE OUT THERE WITH ANYTHING? NO, WE WOULDN'T REQUIRE ANY OF THEIR ASSISTANCE.
WE'D LOVE FOR THEM TO COME OUT AND CHEER US ON WHEN WE HAVE OUR MATCHES.
JUST, DO YOU WANNA AMEND YOUR MOTION OR SOMEONE WANNA PUT A AMENDED MOTION UP? WE WERE ALSO, WE JUST HAVE ONE LITTLE FOLLOW UP QUESTION.
IS IT POSSIBLE, HOW DO WE GO ABOUT, UM, MAKING A REQUEST FOR SOME EQUIPMENT? WE WOULD LOVE SCORECARD SCOREKEEPERS ON THE COURTS.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S ALREADY READY.
WELL, I, AND I'M, THAT'S WHY I, THAT'S WHY I, I'M SORRY, I DIDN'T HEAR YOU.
SO I'VE HEARD THOUGH THAT THAT'S IN THE WORKS WORKS.
THAT POSSIBLY THAT REQUEST HAS ALREADY BEEN MADE, BUT WE JUST THOUGHT WHILE WE WERE HERE WHEN, WHEN WE, WE GET MORE UTILIZATION WITH PEOPLE PAYING A HUNDRED PERCENT OF THE FEES THAN I THINK WE CAN PROBABLY.
SO, UH, ALL RIGHT, CARLOS, YOU WANNA AMEND YOUR, UH, I I DON'T THINK WE HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THAT.
SO I, I DON'T BELIEVE WE HAVE THAT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.
UH, BUT YOU CAN CHECK THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS.
UH, BUT WE NEED TO, UH, SOMEONE NEEDS TO AMEND CARLOS'S MOTION OR CARLOS, GIVE US A PERCENTAGE SO WE CAN VOTE ON IT.
SO THE PERCENTAGE WILL BE 50% AND THIS WILL BE A ONE TIME, UH, THIS WOULD BE A ONE TIME, UH, OPTION.
UM, AS FAR AS THIS WAIVER IS CON THAT WE ARE PUTTING ON BEFORE THE GROUP FOR CONSIDERATION.
AND IT'S, AND, AND, AND WE WILL NOT ENTERTAIN OTHER WAIVERS SUCH AS THIS FOR THIS PURPOSE.
ANY MORE DISCUSSION? ALL IN FAVOR? A OPPOSED? OKAY.
UM, WHOEVER WOULD BE HANDLING THAT WITH THEM THAT YOU NEED TO, LET'S GET THESE DATES NAILED DOWN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
YEAH, YOU DON'T WANT NEED A PHONE CALL THE NIGHT BEFORE, YOU KNOW.
[8. Department Report]
UH, I'LL GO AHEAD AND TALK ABOUT BEAUFORT REGISTRATION NUMBERS REAL QUICK.UM, LEAGUES COMING UP, COMING UP UP OR GOING ON RIGHT NOW WE'VE GOT SUMMER BASKETBALL FOR THE YOUTH AND THEN ADULT BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL GOING ON RIGHT NOW.
UM, NUMBERS ARE DOWN A LITTLE BIT, NOT A WHOLE LOT.
I THINK THAT'S JUST GENERAL KIND OF UP AND DOWN OF THE PROGRAM AS FAR AS THAT GOES.
UM, WE GOT ONE LESS TEAM IN OUR ADULT BASEBALL PROGRAM.
REGISTRATION IS TECHNICALLY STILL OPEN FOR ADULT SOFTBALL.
WE'VE GOT PROBABLY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE THAT ARE SLOW TO GET REGISTERED.
WE HAD ONE WEEK OF GAMES OR ONE ROUND OF GAMES ON TUESDAY.
UM, SO WE USUALLY, TYPICALLY POLICY IS THE SAME FOR US AS IT IS OVER IN, UH, BLUFFTON.
REGISTRATION IS OPEN FOR THE FIRST TWO WEEKS, UM, FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE A LITTLE SLOWER GETTING REGISTERED.
UH, AND THEN WE'RE RUNNING A SUMMER KICKBALL PROGRAM.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE'VE DONE IT IN THE SUMMER.
WE RAN IT IN THE WINTER LAST YEAR.
SO WE DECIDED TO TRY IT AGAIN IN THE SUMMER.
UM, SO WE DON'T HAVE ANY MARGIN TO LOOK AT THERE.
UM, COMPARED TO THE SUMMER OF LAST YEAR, HOW MANY PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN THE WINTER LAST YEAR? I THINK IT WAS 60.
[00:25:01]
80.SO WE'RE, WE'RE DOWN A, A DECENT AMOUNT FROM THE, FROM THE WINTER, BUT DIFFERENT SEASON AS DIFFERENT SEASON.
I MEAN, NOT A WHOLE LOT OF PEOPLE WANT TO GO RUN AROUND.
AND WHERE DID THEY, A BASEBALL FIELD? THEY PLAY KICK WELL IN BUFORT, UH, BURTON WELLS.
UM, SO WE HAD SEVEN TEAMS. SO WE UTILIZED ALL THREE FIELDS OVER THE WINTER.
UM, AND THEN RIGHT NOW WE'RE SITTING AT FOUR TEAMS. HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET A FEW MORE, UH, AND GET A FIFTH TEAM, A FEW MORE PLAYERS AND GET A FIFTH TEAM, UH, WOULD BE HELPFUL.
UH, OTHER THAN THAT, OUR REGISTRATION FOR OUR OTHER SPORTS ARE STILL OPEN.
UM, SO OBVIOUSLY THOSE NUMBERS ARE DOWN RIGHT NOW.
UM, BUT WE'VE GOT I THINK ANOTHER COUPLE WEEKS OF REGISTRATION.
SO I WOULD EXPECT ALL THOSE TO GO BACK UP AND HOPEFULLY EXCEED WHERE WE WERE AT IN THE PREVIOUS SEASONS.
DON'T WE HAVE, UH, I MEAN, FALL SPORTS TYPICALLY WOULD START WHEN? IN SEPTEMBER.
SO I THINK WE'VE GOT PRACTICES STARTING IN SEPTEMBER, AND THEN GAMES ARE GONNA START IN AUGUST.
PRACTICE, REAL WORLD OUT THERE.
WE'RE GONNA MAKE 'EM PLAY GAMES AND THEN GO TO PRACTICE AFTERWARDS.
AND PRETEND THAT I KNOW THAT'S OUR NORMAL REGISTRATION PERIOD.
AND THEN DON'T WE HAVE LIKE A LATE REGISTRATION PERIOD WHERE THEY PAY MORE IF THEY DON'T REGISTER? YEAH, SO IT'S USUALLY A $20 EXTRA FEE.
IT GOES FROM 70 TO 90 FOR A LATE REGISTRATION.
SO
ANYTHING ELSE? MM, EVAN WILL GO, WE'RE BLUFFING AND HE'LL TALK ABOUT THE TOURNAMENTS COMING UP TOO.
UM, RIGHT NOW THE ONLY SPORT WE GOT GOING ON, UM, IS WINTER BAS, OR I'M SORRY, SUMMER BASKETBALL.
UM, THAT'S SEVEN TO 16 YEAR OLDS.
UM, WE ARE ALMOST FINISHED FINALLY, UM, OUR ADULT SOFTBALL PROGRAM TONIGHT.
HOPEFULLY THERE'S NO RAIN AND THAT THAT'S COME TO AN END.
UM, SO THAT'S WHAT WE GOT GOING ON NOW.
UM, OPEN REGISTRATIONS, OR I'M SORRY, KICKBALL AND VOLLEYBALL ARE ADULT SPORTS IN THE SUMMER.
UM, KICKBALL IS DOWN A LITTLE BIT.
UM, I THINK THAT'S PARTLY BECAUSE OF, UM, SOFTBALL STILL GOING ON AND THE GUY'S JUST TAKING A LITTLE BIT OF A BREAK.
UM, AND THEN OUTDOOR VOLLEYBALL WE DO AT BLUFFTON CENTER OUTSIDE.
UM, IS THAT TWO ON TWO OR IS THAT FIVE ON FIVE? IT'S FOUR.
UM, SO I GET JUST LIKE BE FOR OUR FALL YOUTH SPORTS, ALL THAT REGISTRATION'S OPEN RIGHT NOW.
UM, OBVIOUSLY ALL OUR NUMBERS ARE DOWN, BUT WITH TWO WEEKS OF REGISTRATION LEFT, UM, SHANE ACTUALLY DID SOME, UM, MATH THE OTHER DAY AND WE'RE ACTUALLY AHEAD OF WHERE WE WERE AT THIS POINT LAST YEAR, UM, WITH OUR REGISTRATION.
SO WITH TWO WEEKS, THOSE NUMBERS WILL OBVIOUSLY GET CLOSER TO WHAT THEY SHOULD BE.
UM, THE ONLY TOURNAMENT WE HAVE COMING UP, I SHOULD SHOULDN'T SAY THE ONLY TOURNAMENT.
UM, WE'VE GOT TWO, THE DIXIE BOYS AND JUNIOR BOYS WORLD SERIES, UM, JULY 26TH THROUGH 31ST AT BURTON WELLS.
UM, BOTH TEAMS WILL HAVE, UH, 12, BOTH TOURNAMENTS WILL HAVE 12 TEAMS, UM, DIFFERENT STATES.
UM, AND, UH, WE'RE, WE'RE MOVING ALONG ON THAT.
IT'S A, IT'S A BIG, UH, PROJECT, BUT, UH, WE'RE GETTING CLOSE.
ARE YOU UTILIZING, UH, THE NEW AND THE OLD FIELDS OVER THERE? YEAH, SO WE'RE JUST GONNA BE AT THE THREE FIELDS, NEW FIELDS, UM, AT THE NEW FIELDS.
WHEN I SAY NEW, I MEAN YEAH, THE MOST RECENTLY CONSTRUCTED FIELDS.
NO, WE, THERE WAS, THERE WAS A TALK WHEN THIS ALL GOT STARTED OF POSSIBLY USING, UM, OLD BURN WELLS OR ANOTHER FIELD IN BEAUFORT.
BUT JUST WITH HAVING TO DO ALL THE RENOVATIONS AND GETTING IT ACCEPTABLE FOR THE WORLD SERIES, UM, WE WERE ABLE TO FIGURE IT OUT JUST USING THE THREE FIELDS.
AND
WE COMPLETELY CHANGED THE FORMAT, UM, FROM LAST YEAR.
UM, ADDED A FEW EXTRA CAMPS FOR LACROSSE, UM, WHICH WE'RE STILL SEEING SOME INCREASED GROWTH ON, SO THAT'S GOOD.
HOPEFULLY A HARBINGER OF THINGS TO COME.
UH, WE ENDED UP CANCELING ONE OF THE SITES AT BROOMFIELD AND ADDING ANOTHER, UM, SITE, UH, TERM FOR THE FOLKS ON ST.
SO, UM, THERE'S A LOCAL CHURCH THAT'S DOING QUITE A BIT TO FUND THE REGISTRATIONS FOR THE SCOTT CENTER FOLKS.
MUCH ALL OF OUR BLUFFTON CAMPS ARE FULL WITH, UH, WITH WAIT, THEY ALL HAVE WAIT LISTS.
UM, AND THEN BURTON PICKED UP NICELY, UM, OVER THE LAST SEVERAL WEEKS.
SO WE'RE GETTING WELL, UH, MY EYES ARE DEFINITELY NOT THAT GOOD, BUT, UH, SO SCOTT CENTER IN, IN, UH, ST.
[00:30:01]
UP DRAMATICALLY, IS THAT CORRECT? UH, IT'S A LITTLE BIT OF A, SO THIS, THIS IS ACTUALLY SHOWING THE, UM, THE MAXIMUM OF LAST.SO NOT AS MANY ON A PERCENTAGE BASIS AS, BUT DOWN HERE WE'RE PRETTY, PRETTY FULL ON THE SOUTH END, IS THAT CORRECT? ON THE SOUTH END? YES.
SO WE'RE AVERAGING, IT'S THE SUMMERTIME, SO IT'S HOT.
UM, THIS PICTURE OR THIS GROUP OF PICTURES WAS TAKEN ON AN OUTING UP IN, UM, ORANGEBURG AT THE ROSE GARDEN.
UM, SO WE'RE AVERAGING ABOUT 20 TO 25 PEOPLE PER DAY ACROSS ALL THE SITES.
WE JUST GOT THE NEW BUS, SO THAT'S A, THEY'RE LOVING THE BUS
UM, AND OTHER THAN THAT, WE'RE JUST HAVING FUN.
HOW MANY PEOPLE DOES THE BUS HOLD? 36.
AND IT HAS A TWO SPOTS FOR WHEELCHAIR CAPABILITIES.
LIKE THEY CAN JUST GET ON WITH THE RAMP AND EVERYTHING AND JUST STRAP 'EM RIGHT INTO THE WHEELCHAIR AREA.
AND IS THAT BUS USED ACROSS ALL THE CENTERS OR? YES.
SO EVERY MONTH THEY SUBMIT A, UM, CALENDAR THAT HAS ALL THEIR FIELD TRIPS AND THEN WE MAKE A MASTER TRANSPORTATION CALENDAR THAT BUSES OUT FOUR OUT OF FIVE DAYS EVERY WEEK.
SO ARE WE PRETTY MUCH AT CAPACITY IN MOST OF THOSE? YES.
THERE'S A SECOND BUS THAT WILL BE COMING IN HOPEFULLY SOON.
[9. Aquatics]
WOW.UM, FOR BATTERY CREEK, SAME HOURS AS NORMAL.
UM, THE PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE GOING ON AT OUR BATTERY CREEK POOL, WE HAVE OUR DEEP WATER AEROBICS, WHICH IS ON MONDAYS AND FRIDAYS.
THAT USED TO BE AT OUR BLUFF AND POOL.
AND BECAUSE, BECAUSE BLUFFTON IS CLOSED RIGHT NOW, THEY MOVED OVER TO BATTERY CREEK.
WE HAVE OUR FIN SWIM TEAM ALSO WAS AT BLUFFTON, CAME TO BATTERY CREEK AS WELL.
AND THEN WE OFFER OUR SCUBA CLASSES AS WELL.
UM, THE PATRONS, THE CHECK-INS FROM MAY, IT WAS 369, BUT FOR JUNE YOU CAN SEE THAT IT WENT UP BECAUSE OF THE PATRONS COMING FROM BLUFFTON POOL TO BATTERY CREEK POOL.
SO, AND WAS THERE ANY WAS, I MEAN THE ISSUE FOR US ALWAYS HAS BEEN THE UTILIZATION OF THE POOL AND UNDERSTANDING, UM, WHERE IT'S AT RELATIVE TO CAPACITY.
SO AT 8 91, BECAUSE OF ALL THE SCHEDULING, WHATEVER, IT'S THE POOL'S HANDLING IT FINE.
ALL THE SCHEDULING AND EVERYTHING, WE'RE MAKING SURE THAT EVERYTHING'S NOT OVERLAPPING OR WHATNOT.
SO EVERYONE'S IN THEIR SPACES, EVERYONE'S FINE.
AND, AND, AND I HAVEN'T HEARD ANY HUGE UPROAR, AT LEAST I HAVEN'T, BUT I'M SURE MAYBE YOU ALL HAVE ABOUT BLUFFTON.
SO, SO IS THAT WORKING OUT? I MEAN, I HAVEN'T SEEN IT IN THE PAPERS OR ANYTHING, OR
SO YOU MUST BE DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB OF YES, WE DO HAVE A FEW OF THE PUBLIC, UM, LAP SWIMMERS THAT NORMALLY SWIM AT BATTER UP LEFT AND POOL THAT HAVE COME OVER TO BATTERY CREEK AND THEY ACTUALLY LIKE IT.
SO, AND THE FINS ARE FINE AS OF RIGHT NOW, THE FINS ARE FINE? YES.
SO YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANYTHING FROM MAY RIVER OR BLUFF AND HIGH, CORRECT.
BECAUSE THAT, THAT THE COACH YEAH.
THAT'S THE SAME COACH FOR THE FIN SWIM TEAM.
SO I WOULD ASSUME IT WOULD BE AT THE SAME TIME, BUT HE HAS NOT LET ME KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HE WANTS.
I'LL CHECK WITH BOTH OF THOSE HIGH SCHOOLS.
'CAUSE THAT WAS A CONCERN FROM THERE, BOTH ATHLETIC DIRECTORS, UM, WHICH IS TOTALLY FINE.
WE CAN DO WHAT WE'VE DONE BEFORE.
UM, WHEN BLUFFTON WAS CLOSED THE FIRST TIME, UM, THEY CAN SWIM IN THE MORNING IF THEY WANT TO DO THAT OR IF THEY CAN STAY IN THE AFTERNOON.
SO IT'S HOWEVER THEY WANNA DO IT.
[00:35:01]
CONTACTED ME YET.I'LL MAKE SURE I SPEAK WITH THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORS.
SO WE HAVE A SCHEDULE THAT ALIGNS WITH WHAT YOU GUYS HAVE COME GOING ON, ON A NORMAL BASIS.
BECAUSE I KNOW THAT BUFORD HIGHS PRACTICE THEIR STARTS, UM, IN AUGUST.
SO, SO FOR, AND SAME HOURS AS NORMAL.
UM, THE PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE RIGHT NOW IS OUR WATER AEROBICS, UH, WEDNESDAYS AND FRIDAYS, SORRY.
UM, AND THAT'S WITH A DIFFERENT INSTRUCTOR.
AND THEN OUR CHECK-INS FOR THAT LOCATION IS 1,543 FOR MAY.
THAT'S THE DROP OFF THERE IS BECAUSE FINS WAS SPLIT UP WITH THREE POOLS AND THEN THEY ALL TRANSFERRED ALL TO BATTERY CREEK.
SO I'M LITERALLY AGAIN, ANOTHER QUESTION PERTAINING TO THE POOLS.
AGAIN, YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS POTENTIALLY BEING AT THAT POOL.
'CAUSE YOU HAVE MAY RIVER BLUFFING, BATTERY CREEK, AND WELL BRANCH, BATTERY CREEK AND WELL BRANCH, WHICH IS A COMBINED TEAM.
SO LAST YEAR, BATTERY CREEK AND WELL BRANCH DID NOT HAVE A TEAM.
WE ASKED AND IT WAS, IT WAS, YEAH.
IT WAS VERY SLOW IN TRYING TO GET IT ESTABLISHED.
AND BY THE TIME THAT THEY DID ASK, AND THEY MAY NOT AGAIN THIS YEAR, SO YEAH.
THAT BY THE TIME THEY ASKED, THE SEASON HAD ALREADY BEEN HALFWAY THROUGH AND YEP.
OUT OF ALL THE SPORTS, THAT IS THE SMALLEST SEASON.
I'LL CHECK WITH THEIR ATHLETIC DIRECTORS TO SEE WHAT THE STATUS OF THOSE TEAMS ARE.
SO YEAH, IF WE HAVE FOUR TEAMS, THAT'S TOTALLY FINE.
WE CAN IT BATTERY CREEK AND WELL BRANCH COULD BE THE ONES FIRST THING IN THE MORNING BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY THEY'RE RIGHT THERE.
WHILE WE COULD HAVE MAY RIVER AND, UM, BLUFFTON IN THE AFTERNOONS, WHICH IS PRETTY MUCH WHERE THEY'RE SWIMMING RIGHT NOW BECAUSE MOST OF THEM ARE ON THAT FIN SWIM TEAM.
SO THERE REALLY AREN'T MANY, MANY FIN SWIMMERS THAT AREN'T ON HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS UNLESS THEY'RE YOUNGER.
MOST OF THE OLDER KIDS ON THE TEAM ARE ON THE HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS. YES.
AND THEN OBVIOUSLY BLUFFTON POOL IS CLOSED.
UM, THEY HAVE BEEN DOING CONSTRUCTION GOING ON THERE.
UM, IT IS COMPLETELY EMPTIED OUT
WELL I THINK THE, THE BIGGEST ISSUE IS GONNA BE, I, I'M SURE THE COUNTY HAS THE LAY EYES ON WITH THE CONTRACTOR RIGHT.
TO
SO LET'S KEEPING CHARGE OF IT.
AND THEN OUR OUTDOOR POOL, OUR ALVIN SETTLES OUTDOOR POOL.
SO WE ARE OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, 11 TO SEVEN, SUNDAYS ONE TO SEVEN, AND MONDAYS WE ARE CLOSED.
EVEN THOUGH MONDAY THE POOL IS CLOSED HERE, THE INDOOR POOLS ARE OPEN.
SO WE HAVE A POOL OPEN AT LEAST SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.
SO, UM, WE ARE ALSO OPEN ON THE HOLIDAYS AS WELL.
SO, UM, MEMORIAL DAY, 4TH OF JULY WE WERE OPEN AND WE'LL BE OPEN ON LABOR DAY AS WELL.
AND THAT WILL BE OUR LAST DAY THAT WE CLOSE THE PATRONS FOR MAY.
AND IT WAS LITERALLY MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TO THE END OF MAY.
SO THIS IS OUR MOST POPULAR POOL OUT OF ALL OF THE POOLS.
AND THAT, THAT POOL'S IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE.
UH, WE DO NEED SOME REGULAR MAINTENANCE GOING ON TO IT.
UM, WE HAVE PUT IN THAT REQUEST AND EVERYTHING LIKE THAT, BUT AS OF RIGHT NOW, YEAH, WE ARE GOOD TO GO.
AND THE SLIDES ARE WORKING WELL,
WE ARE HOPING THAT NEXT SUMMER WE WILL HAVE A NEW SLIDE.
BUT WE HAVE THE INFLATABLES OUT THERE.
THE INFLATABLES ARE THERE EVERY SINGLE DAY.
THEY GOT PUT IN THE FIRST WEEKEND AND THEY HAVE NOT BEEN TAKEN OUT AND THE KIDS LOVE THE INFLATABLES.
NOW DO THEY BUY SUMMER PASSES FOR THE POOL? YEP.
SO WHATEVER PASSES YOU BUY AT THE INDOOR POOLS CAN WORK AT ANY OF THE POOLS.
SO YOU CAN BUY IT AT THE OUTDOOR POOL OR AT THE INDOOR POOL.
AND IT DOES THE EXACT SAME THING FOR ALL THE POOLS.
SO, UM, WE TRY TO ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO BUY THE MONTHLY PASSES, THOSE, THAT'S $40 FOR A FAMILY AND THAT COVERS UP TO FOUR PEOPLE.
WHERE IS ALVIN SETTLES FOR? IT IS RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE NATIONAL CEMETERY DOWNTOWN ALSO BY BROWN CENTER.
AND THEN THE CLASSES THAT WE OFFER, WE OFFER SWIM LESSONS GROUP AND PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS.
IT PRETTY MUCH GOES MONTH BY MONTH.
UM, WE OFFER OUR STROKE IMPROVEMENT THAT'S FOR THE ADULTS
[00:40:01]
FOR IT'S SWIM LESSONS, BUT IT'S FOR THE ADULTS AND GEARING MORE TOWARDS WHAT THEY INDIVIDUALLY WANT.AND THEN WE HAVE CPR AND LIFEGUARDING CLASSES.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR THE POOLS? ARE WE HAVE ENOUGH LIFEGUARDS? NO, WE DEFINITELY NEED MORE.
WE WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MORE SWIM LESSONS, BUT IT'S MAINLY BECAUSE WE ARE SHORT STAFFED WITH LIFEGUARDS, SO WE ARE DOING WHAT WE CAN FOR SWIM LESSONS.
UM, WE HAVE GROUP SWIM LESSONS AT OUR BEAVER POOL WHILE WE HAVE PRIVATE LESSONS AT OUR BATTERY CREEK POOL TO NOT CONFUSE PEOPLE.
UM, BUT YEAH, AS LONG AS WE CAN GET MORE STAFF.
AND THEN WHAT ABOUT THE SWIM LESSONS WITH THE SCHOOL? SO THAT IS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND THAT'S ALWAYS IN THE MORNING TIME, SO BETWEEN NINE AND ONE.
SO THE FACT THAT WE'RE, WE'RE NOT GONNA HAVE BLUFFTON FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS.
ARE THE, ARE THE SWIM LESSONS TYPICALLY IN THE MORNING? I MEAN IN THE, IN THE FALL OR THE SPRING OR BOTH? THE MOMENT SCHOOL YEAR STARTS GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.
SO WHENEVER SCHOOL, WHENEVER ANY OF THE SCHOOLS WANT TO SIGN UP, I'VE CALLED THE BLUFFTON SCHOOLS.
WE ARE BOOKED FROM FEBRUARY TILL MAY FOR 2025 FOR BLUFFTON.
ALL THE SCHOOLS THAT ARE NOT FOR BLUFFTON OR NOT SCHEDULED FOR BLUFFTON, I HAVE OFFERED THEM TO GO TO BATTERY CREEK, BUT NONE OF THEM HAVE TAKEN THAT OFFER UP YET.
I, YEAH, SO THIS IS A CONTRACT THAT, THAT WE HAVE WITH BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOLS.
AND SO I I GUESS WITH, WITH THERE BEING NO FACILITY THEN ARE WE, THEY'RE THERE.
SO WHAT WE'VE OFFERED THE LAST TIME WE CLOSED A POOL, WE NORMALLY SWIM LESSONS ARE FOR SECOND GRADERS.
WE DID OPEN IT UP FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
YOU CAN DO SECOND AND THIRD GRADE.
SO I, I GUESS ALL I'M SAYING, AND THIS IS BEYOND MY PAY GRADE OBVIOUSLY, IS THAT WE'RE MEETING THE TERMS OF THAT CONTRACT CORRECT.
REGARDLESS OF BY, BY MOVING THOSE PEOPLE TO THE NEXT YEAR.
SO NEXT YEAR WE'LL OFFER AGAIN, SECOND AND THIRD GRADE IF THAT SCHOOL DID NOT COME, AND THEN IT'S STILL O OPEN IF THEY WANT TO GO TO BATTERY CREEK, SINCE THAT'S THE CLOSEST POOL TO BLUFFTON.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? MR. MAY CARLOS WAS THE SCHOOL UP FOR RENEGOTIATION FOR RENEWAL OF THE CONTRACT? I WAS JUST SPEAKING TO ERIC ABOUT THAT.
WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING THROUGH THAT RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK.
SO I MEAN, IT'S GOING TO WORK OUT.
IS THE, IS NOT GONNA BE PROBLEMATIC AT ALL.
I THINK THE COUNTY'S ATTORNEY AND OUR ATTORNEY THAT'S WORKING OUT SOME LANGUAGE.
I THOUGHT YOU MENTIONED THAT THE CONTRACTOR WAS COMING UP.
IS THAT GONNA BE FOR ANOTHER FIVE YEARS OR WITHOUT ME HAVING IT IN FRONT OF ME? YEAH, I, I THINK IT IS YEAR.
IT'S A YEARLY CONTRACT WITH THE OPTION TO EXTEND OUT IS WHAT I BELIEVE WAS PART OF THE VERBIAGE.
UH, BUT LIKE I SAID, I DO NOT FORESEE A SCENARIO WHERE, UH, WE'RE NOT GONNA BE ABLE TO WORK TOGETHER LIKE WE HAVE BEEN WORKING WITHOUT ANY ISSUES.
[10. Department Updates]
HELLO? I HAVE JUST ONE THING, RIGHT?UH, THE FIRST THING I'LL TALK ABOUT IS WE, WE ARE IN THE HUNT OF A DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR BEAUFORT COUNTY PARKS AND RECREATION.
UH, WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT ALL THE PROGRAMMING THAT'S HAPPENING IN BEAUFORT COUNTY.
WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THE, UH, UM, PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD.
THE SHARED AGREEMENT, UH, AS, UH, DR.
CAVE JUST MENTIONED TO ME ABOUT, AND OUR ATTORNEYS ARE WORKING OUT ALL OF THE LOGISTICS ON THE AGREEMENT AND WE'RE HOPING TO HAVE, I WAS JUST TEXTING OUR ATTORNEY JUST, AND I JUST SAID IN THE TEXT SCHOOL BOARD AGREEMENT AND, UH, SHE'LL TEXT ME BACK LATER.
SO,
THE ONLY THING I WANTED TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION OR TALK TO YOU GUYS ABOUT IS, UM, OUR RETREAT A FEW MONTHS AGO, WE PUT OUT A NEW, UM, CAMPAIGN COME RISE WITH US, AND THAT RISES RESPECT, INTEGRITY WITH THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE.
AND, UH, WE DIDN'T THIS TERM AROUND, BUT THE NEXT TERM WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GET ALL OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS A COPY OF THAT, SIR, PLEASE.
AND THAT THOSE LITTLE THINGS THAT WE HAVE IN OUR OFFICE, ALL OF OUR STAFF, WE WENT THROUGH A NICE RETREAT AND, UH, TOOK A NICE PICTURE AND WE PUT THIS RISE CAMPAIGN UP IN OUR OFFICE.
[00:45:01]
TO GET YOU GUYS A COPY OF THAT AS WELL.AND NOT JUST FOR US, BUT WE WANT ALL OF OUR PATRONS, WE WANT ALL OF OUR COACHES, UH, OH, WE WANT, UM, EVERYBODY TO USE A, A RECREATION FACILITY AND A AND BEYOND IN BEAUFORT COUNTY TO BE A PART OF THIS.
BECAUSE I THINK THAT THAT ACRONYM IS JUST HOW WE NEED TO GOVERN OURSELVES AS EMPLOYEES, AS CITIZENS, AS, UM, AS PEOPLE BASICALLY.
AND SO WE'RE GONNA MAKE SURE THAT THIS CAMPAIGN GOES BEYOND JUST RECREATION, ESPECIALLY WITH OUR SPORTS TEAMS. UM, BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, IF I RESPECT YOU AND I SHOW INTEGRITY AND I HAVE A STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE, YOU KNOW, IT'LL CARRY ME A LONG WAY.
AND SO, UM, I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU GUYS AND MAKE SURE THAT WE GET YOU GUYS, UM, ONE OF THOSE BROCHURE, ONE OF THOSE, UH, AND IT'S NOT A BIG ONE, BUT IT'S A SMALL, UM, BOOKLET THAT YOU CAN HAVE AND YOU'LL SEE THAT, UH, YOU GUYS WILL ACTUALLY GONNA RISE WITH US.
ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME?
UM, AND ALSO ON OUR WEBSITE, THE FINAL REPORT FOR THE, UM, FOR THE STUDY, THE PARKS MASTER PLAN.
AND, UH, AS YOU ALL KNOW, UM, YOU KNOW, WE'RE, WE, WERE PART OF THAT PROCESS, BUT THE REALITY IS ALL THE FUND FUNDING FOR ALL THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS, ET CETERA, HAPPENS AT THE COUNTY COUNCIL LEVEL.
SO, UH, I WOULD URGE ALL OF US TO TAKE A LOOK AT THAT.
UM, IT'S A PRETTY COMPREHENSIVE DOCUMENT.
UH, AND, AND I THINK IN GENERAL IT SHOWS THAT WE'RE, WE WERE DOING THINGS PRETTY WELL FOR THE MOST PART.
UM, YOU DID MENTION, I KNOW, BECAUSE WE, THERE IS SOME MISUNDERSTANDING OF WHAT OUR ROLE IS AS A BOARD AND SOME OF THAT CAME OUT AT OUR LAST MEETING.
AND I KNOW THAT YOU WERE GOING TO GO INTO THE VARIOUS COMMUNITIES, UH, AND HAVE MEETINGS.
HAVE, UH, MY QUESTION IS HAVE YOU DONE THAT? HOW'S THAT GOING? WELL, YEAH, WELL, ONE SINCE WE, SINCE WE WE LAST MET AND JUST TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON THE ROLES OF THIS BOARD AND THE ROLES OF OUR ELECTED OFFICIAL BOARD, THE BOARD, THE, THE, THE DECISION MAKERS OR THE LAWMAKERS AND ALL THAT IN BEAUFORT COUNTY.
AND SO AT THIS BOARD, IT'S NOT NECESSARY TO COME HERE AND ASK FOR A NEW BUILDING BECAUSE THIS BOARD DOESN'T GOVERN, YOU KNOW, NEW BUILDINGS.
UM, SO YEAH, WE'RE EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO BOARDS.
UM, PARKS ADVISORY BOARD, THEY ADVISE, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE NAME ACTUALLY SPELLS OUT WHAT IT IS.
HAD ON HAD ONE MEETING SINCE THEN, BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND MAKE THEM AWARE OF, UM, OUR BOARDS AND WHAT THEY STAND FOR, HOW THEY CAN HELP US AND ALL THAT GOOD STUFF.
SO YES, WE, WE, WE STARTED THAT PROCESS.
AND YOU'VE BEEN ON THE JOB HOW LONG NOW?
AND YOU AND YOU'RE STILL SMILING
SO, UH, I WOULD SAY HOLD ON, HOLD ON, EVAN.
NOW DARRELL DOESN'T SMILE VERY MUCH.
HE EVEN SMILES FOR HIMSELF A LITTLE BIT.
HE DOESN'T, HIS VOICE DOESN'T GO UP INFLECTION WISE THOUGH.
UM, DOES ANYBODY ELSE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ERIC? I'D LIKE TO MAKE A COMMENT.
SO SINCE UH, MR. BROWN HAS BEEN HERE, UM, WE'VE HAD CONVERSATIONS.
UM, HE'S BEEN ABLE TO, AND I'VE INVITED HIM, HE'S BEEN ABLE TO, UH, SPEAK TO THE, ALL OF THE PRINCIPALS, UM, MIDDLE, HIGH AND ELEMENTARY.
UH, AND I'VE INVITED HIM AGAIN.
HE'LL BE GOING AND HAVING AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TO ALL OF THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORS AND COACHES AT OUR CO COACHES CONVOCATION AT BATTERY CREEK ON JULY THE 25TH.
SO I'M LIKE, AS I SHARED WITH HIM BEING INTENTIONAL, UM, WITH THE FACT THAT WE WANT THIS MARRIAGE TO WORK BETTER THAN HAS WORKED IN THE PAST AND MAKING SURE THAT ALL THE STAKEHOLDERS WITHIN, UM, BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT, UH, THEY ARE MADE AWARE OF THE THINGS THAT, UH, THE PARK AND REC, UM, HAVE TO OFFER.
AND ONCE WE GET THE FACILITY PIECE ROCK AND ROLLING, I I JUST ENVISION A
[00:50:01]
LOT OF, A LOT MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL OF THE, THE, UH, STUDENTS HERE IN THE COUNTY AND ADULTS AS WELL.UH, I REALLY APPRECIATE THAT, CARLOS.
UH, I, THAT'S BEEN SOMETHING THAT HAD BEEN LACKING FOR A LONG TIME AND UM, I'M, I'M VERY HAPPY TO HEAR THAT, UH, THAT IS GOING WELL.
UM, BECAUSE YES, WE, WE HAVE PARALLEL INTERESTS, SO TO SPEAK.
AND WE SERVE THE SAME CONSTITUENCY.
SO THAT, THAT MAKES A LOT OF SENSE.
UM, SO, UM, I'VE BEEN, UH, IN THIS COMMUNITY FOR ABOUT 20 YEARS NOW.
UM, MY SON HAS ACTUALLY GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL GOING TO COLLEGE NOW.
BUT I KIND OF GOT INVOLVED IN ALL OF THIS BOTH THROUGH ADULT SPORTS AND BASEBALL AND WAS EVEN WITH THE YOUTH ORGANIZATION, THE BLUFFING NEW SPORTS.
SO FOR THE LAST 12 YEARS, I'VE KIND OF HEARD OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN IN BLUFFTON THAT WE WERE GONNA GET MORE FIELDS AND NEW FIELDS AND LITERALLY WE WERE TOLD THAT EVERY SINGLE YEAR.
AND SO I'VE KIND OF BEEN OUT OF THE MIX LAST COUPLE YEARS AND I'M KIND OF, I DON'T KNOW IF YOU KNOW THIS, BUT I'M GOING BACK INTO IT A LITTLE BIT WITH THE YOUTH SPORTS.
AND SO THEY'RE ASKING, I'M GETTING A LOT OF PEOPLE ASKING ABOUT WHAT'S THE PLAN TO BUILD MORE BASEBALL FIELDS.
SO WE ACTUALLY HAVE A, WE ACTUALLY HAVE A PLAN WHERE THERE'S FOUR FIELDS, MAYBE TWO FIELDS, AND WE ARE GONNA HAVE A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD, UM, WITH TWO OTHER TWO OF THOSE FIELDS AS WELL.
SO FOUR FIELDS TOTAL THAT WILL THE PROCESS HAVE STARTED ALREADY HERE, RIGHT HERE ON THIS CAMPUS.
FOUR MORE FIELDS SO THAT IT'S, UM, YOU SAID 12 YEARS HAS BEEN IN THE PROCESS.
WELL, IT'S COMING TO FRUITION.
SO WE ARE IN THE PROCESS, EARLY STAGES, PROCESS, LEMME PUT THAT OUT THERE.
EARLY STAGES, JUST PLANNING STAGES.
YOU KNOW, THERE, THERE ACTUALLY ARE PLANS OUT ALREADY, SO THE FIELDS ARE NOT GOING UP TOMORROW, BUT THERE ARE PLANS TO MOVE THAT FORWARD, RIGHT? YES.
AND THEN I WOULD PRESUME ALSO WITH THAT INTERACTION WITH SCHOOL FACILITIES, YOU KNOW, FOR, FOR EXAMPLE, ONE FACILITY BEING BLUFFTON MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS A VERY NICE SOFTBALL FIELD.
SO I, I THINK THIS INTERACTION WITH THE SCHOOL AND THIS NEW CONTRACT IS GOING TO, UM, UH, REALLY DO A LOT FOR THAT.
NOT NECESSARILY JUST ON THE SOUTH END OF THE COUNTY, BUT ALSO THE NORTH END WHERE WE DON'T HAVE A BIG FACILITY IN SOME OF THE UNDERUSED AREAS.
SO IF WE CAN GET ACCESS TO SOME OF THOSE GYMS AND SOME OF THOSE OTHER THINGS IN THOSE COMMUNITIES POTENTIALLY, UH, THAT'S GONNA LEVERAGE, UH, RESOURCES THAT WE HAVE.
NO, AND AND YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.
AND YOU CALL IT, UH, CONSTITUENTS, I CALL IT COMMODITIES.
WE, AND DURING THE DAY, DURING SCHOOL HOURS, THIS PLACE IS NOT PACKED WITH CHILDREN 'CAUSE THEY'RE IN SCHOOL.
SO GUESS WHAT? THEY CAN UTILIZE THE FACILITY AFTER SCHOOL.
BUT WE HAVE EVENING PROGRAMS WE CAN UTILIZE THE FACILITIES, RIGHT? SO IT'S GONNA BE A MARRIAGE MADE, YOU KNOW, UM, IN BUFORT BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY UTILIZE, UM, EACH OTHER'S FACILITIES.
AND THOSE SAME KIDS WILL GET A CHANCE TO COME IN A REC CENTER OR GO TO A, UH, SCHOOL BOARD PROPERTY FOR, FOR REC FOR REC BALL AS WELL AS ADULTS.
BECAUSE I KNOW, UM, EVAN HAS A, A ADULT LEAGUE THAT WE, WE TRAVEL ALL THE WAY TO HILTON HEAD AND, YOU KNOW, TRAFFIC GOING TO HILTON HEAD, YOU KNOW, IN THE EVENING TIMES, YOU KNOW, CAN BE MURDER.
AND GETTING OUR STAFF THERE TO, TO MAINTAIN THOSE FIELDS.
NOW IF WE HAD A, UM, FACILITY USE OF, UH, UH, USAGE AGREEMENT WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD, THEN WE CAN JUST GO RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET AND YOU UTILIZE THE HIGH SCHOOL FIELD.
AND SO THAT AGREEMENT WILL FREE UP SOME TIME, YOU KNOW, SOME, SOME FINANCES AND, AND UH, DEFINITELY GIVE US, YOU KNOW, UM, SPACE WHERE BLUFFTON, ESPECIALLY HERE IN BLUFFTON, THEY'LL HAVE FIELDS RIGHT HERE THEY CAN USE AND RIGHT HERE.
SO WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE, THE PARTNERSHIP.
WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO, UM, THE AGREEMENT BEING FINALIZED SO THAT WE CAN DO THOSE THINGS.
UM, ONE OTHER THING I, I THINK THE STUDY BROUGHT, UH, I THINK IT WAS THE STUDY TALKED ABOUT, UM, HAVING A VOLUNTEER CORPS OF, UH, LOCAL PEOPLE WHO COULD ASSIST, UH, THAT WANT TO VOLUNTEER IN PARKS AND RECS.
HAS THERE BEEN ANYTHING, HAVE, HAVE YOU, I MEAN I KNOW THIS IS A LOT, YOU'VE DONE A LOT IN A SHORT TIME.
WELL, WELL, BUT, BUT THAT WAS AN ISSUE, RIGHT? PEOPLE WHO WANTED TO VOLUNTEER, YOU KNOW, THAT WOULDN'T BE PAID EMPLOYEES, RIGHT? YEAH.
AND, AND, AND THAT WOULD REQUIRE A POSITION, I GUESS SOMEONE TO FACILITATE ALL THAT YEAH.
IS THAT SOMETHING THAT'S STILL OUT THERE? WELL, IT'S, IT'S OUT THERE, BUT WE HAVE, ESPECIALLY IN THE, UH, SHELDON AREA, BOOKER T AREA, UM, JUST THIS PAST SUMMER I WAS ABLE TO GO OUT AND FIND A COUPLE OF VOLUNTEERS THAT ACTUALLY WENT AND, UM, WENT THROUGH OUR PROCESS
[00:55:01]
OF BEING, UH, VOLUNTEER ELIGIBLE TO BE ABLE TO DEAL WITH OUR CHILDREN.AND THEN, YOU KNOW, OF COURSE THE AGNES CENTER WENT DOWN, SO WE WEREN'T ABLE TO HAVE CAMP THERE, BUT WE PUT IN PROVISIONS SOME WITH SOME THINGS TO GET THEM OTHER PLACES, BUT IT DIDN'T MATERIALIZE.
BUT THAT HAS, HAS ALREADY STARTED WITH OUR VOLUNTEERS, UM, HELPING OUT, NOT JUST IN SPORTS, BECAUSE THAT IS HUGE.
WE HAVE A HUGE, UM, GROWING OF, OF, OF ADULT SPORTS COACHES.
BUT THEN, YOU KNOW, ONCE OUR AFTERCARE PROGRAMS STARTED, SOME OF OUR FACILITIES WE'LL NEED VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEERS TO COME IN WITH THAT.
AND NOW AT THE LYNN BROWN CENTER, WHICH ACTUALLY IS ACTIVATED NOW FULLY, WE HAVE VOLUNTEERS THAT ACTUALLY STARTED A FEMALE AND A MALE MENTORING PROGRAM.
AND I THINK IT WAS EIGHT VOLUNTEERS SO FAR THAT REGISTERED FOR THAT.
AND SO THAT PROCESS OF ALREADY STARTED.
DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANYTHING ELSE FOR ERIC? ANY QUESTIONS, ANY COMMENTS? I LIKE TO SAY I WAS, I'VE BEEN ON THIS BOARD SINCE, UM, 2009, I THINK.
AND YOU WERE A YOUNG MAN THEN TO HEAR, TO HEAR WHAT Y'ALL SAYING ABOUT THE, THE FELLOWSHIP PARTNERSHIP WITH THE SCHOOL, WITH THE SCHOOLS, THAT'S A GREAT 'CAUSE THAT, THAT SEEMED LIKE IT WOULD'VE BEEN A NIGHTMARE OVER THE YEARS.
LIKE IT WAS A HATE, A HATE THERE, AND I JUST NEVER UNDERSTOOD IT.
WHY IT WAS A HATE RELATIONSHIP.
BUT THAT'S, THAT'S A GOOD THING THAT, THAT Y'ALL PARTNER UP TOGETHER.
WELL, I, I APPRECIATE ALL THAT.
WE ALL APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT YOU ALL DO AND, UM, APPRECIATE EVERYTHING THAT YOU ALL DO AS WELL, UH, IN BRINGING RECREATION TO, UH, OUR COMMUNITY, OUR SENIORS, UH, EVERYTHING.
AND I'LL JUST CLOSE OUT BY SAYING I DO HAVE THE BEST STAFF ON THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN.
THESE GUYS ARE FANTASTIC, YOU KNOW, THAT'S GREAT.
SO WITH THAT, UH, UH, ANNOUNCEMENTS, UH,
[11. Announcements]
OUR NEXT MEETING IS SEPTEMBER 5TH.UM, WE, UH, OH, BEFORE I SAY THAT, UM, WE, UH, STILL HAVE I THINK, UH, A BOARD SEAT OPEN, UH, WITH, UM, PHIL HAS TAKEN A SOUTH OF THE BROAD SEAT, SO THAT LEAVES AN AT LARGE POSITION AVAILABLE.
AND THAT WOULD BE, UM, WE, WE HAVE SOME, UM, PEOPLE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THAT FROM THE NORTH OF THE BROAD.
AND, UM, I SPOKE TO ONE OF THEM THIS MORNING AND, UM, DON'T WE HAVE ONE OTHER SEAT, UH, SOUTH OF THE BROAD SEAT AVAILABLE, OR BECAUSE WE SHIFTED THAT, WE SHIFTED THAT.
AND THEN WE ALSO, UH, HAVE A, UH, A SEAT AVAILABLE THAT HASN'T BEEN FILLED FOR, UH, THE MILITARY.
AND SO, UH, WHAT I WOULD RECOMMEND, AND I CAN DO THAT, IS, YOU KNOW, I'LL SEND A LETTER OR SOMETHING, CONTACT THE, THE, UH, COMMANDING OFFICER OVER THERE IF WE CAN'T GET ANYWHERE.
AND I WOULD PRESUME THEY'D WANT TO BE INVOLVED, BUT, YOU KNOW, GROUP USUALLY AT, UH, THE SPORTS DEPARTMENT AT
AND, UH, THEN THE PERSON THAT WE WERE WORKING WITH, I GUESS IS SHE'S, SO I THINK SHE'S GONE.
SO WE NEED TO GET THE PROPER CONTACT PERSON BECAUSE I THINK THE RELATIONSHIP, AS YOU SAID, WITH THE SCHOOLS, THAT'S IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
AND I THINK ESPECIALLY ON THE NORTHERN, UH, SIDE OF THE COUNTY, THAT RELATIONSHIP WITH THE MILITARY IS VERY IMPORTANT.
UH, SO WE NEED TO GET THAT, UH, POST ACTIVELY FILLED BROWN WELFARE OFFICE MIGHT HAVE A POSSIBILITY OF A SUGGESTION.
SO, WE'LL, WE'LL TRY TO, UH, MAKE SOME HEADWAY ON THAT BY OUR NEXT MEETING.
SO WITH THAT, IF NOBODY HAS ANYTHING ELSE, I'LL TAKE A MOTION TO ADJOURN.
