I'M THE, UM, DEPARTMENT CHAIR OF THIS WONDERFUL NURSING PROGRAM AND I AM SO EXCITED THAT WE ARE ALL HERE TODAY TO CELEBRATE THESE WONDERFUL STUDENTS.
I HAVE HAD A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES TO SPEND TIME WITH THEM, AND I CAN CONFIDENTLY SAY THAT IF I WERE EVER IN A HOSPITAL BED AND LOOKED UP AND SAW THEM, I WOULD KNOW I WAS IN GOOD HANDS.
SO, SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, I AM GOING TO INTRODUCE NOW THE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY, DR.

THE NURSE SPINNING CEREMONY IS A TIME HONORED TRADITION IN THE NURSING PROFESSION, SIGNIFYING THE TRANSITION FROM STUDENT TO PROFESSIONAL NURSE.
[00:05:01]
IN THE 1860S COINCIDING WITH THE EMERGENCE OF MODERN, MODERN NURSING PRACTICES AND NURSING EDUCATION.OVER TIME, THE NURSE SPINNING CEREMONY HAS BECOME A RITE OF PASSAGE FOR NURSING STUDENTS DURING THEIR TRANSITION FROM ACADEMIC REALM TO CLINICAL SETTING.
IT IS A MOMENT OF PRIDE AND CELEBRATION FOR BOTH THE GRADUATES AND THEIR FAMILIES RECOGNIZING THE HARD WORK, DEDICATION, AND SACRIFICES THAT HAVE LED TO THIS SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE.
AS WE CELEBRATE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS, I'M REMINDED OF THE LIFE AND WORK OF A NURSE WHOSE LEGACY CONTINUES TO INSPIRE GENERATIONS.
CLARA BARTON OFTEN REFERRED TO AS THE ANGEL OF THE BATTLEFIELD, CLARA BARTON, EMBODIED SELFLESSNESS AND COURAGE IN HER TIRELESS EFFORTS TO PROVIDE CARE TO WOUNDED SOLDIERS DURING THE US CIVIL WAR.
BARTON RISK HER LIFE TO BRING SUPPLIES AND MEDICAL ATTENTION TO SOLDIERS ON THE FRONTLINE.
AS BULLET WHIZZED OVERHEAD AND ARTILLERY BOOMED, SHE TENDED TO THE WOUND TO THE WOUNDED FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE CONFLICT.
CLAIRE BARTON WENT ON TO FOUND THE AMERICAN RED CROSS IN 1881 AT AGE 59 AND LED IT FOR THE NEXT 23 YEARS.
JUST, JUST LIKE CLAIRE BARTON, EACH OF YOU HAS CHOSEN A PATH OF SERVICE.
WHETHER YOU FIND YOURSELF IN HOSPITALS, CLINICS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, SCHOOLS, OR ANY OTHER HEALTHCARE SETTING, YOU'LL HAVE A PROFOUND IMPACT ON A LIFE, ON A LIVES OF THOSE ENTRUSTED TO YOUR CARE.
TODAY WE ARE PLEASED TO RECOGNIZE AND AND ADMIRE THE INCREDIBLE SUSTAINED EFFORT YOU SHOWED TO REACH THIS MOMENT.
YOU DEDICATED COUNTLESS HOURS TO RIGOROUS STUDIES, CLINICAL PRACTICE, PREPARING FOR THE ASSESSMENTS.
YOU HAVE MISSED PARTIES AND THE IMPORTANT FAMILY EVENTS, CUT SHORT VACATIONS, LOST SLEEP, AND CONQUERED STRESS AND TEST ANXIETY.
AND YOU DID THIS BECAUSE YOU CHOSE A PROFESSION THAT DEMANDS NOT ONLY INTELLECTUAL ABILITY, BUT ALSO A DEEP DEDICATION TO CARING FOR FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS.
ALMOST ALL OF US HAVE BEEN A PATIENT AT SOME TIME IN OUR LIVES AND MANY OF US REMEMBER WITH GRATITUDE, THE KINDNESS AND COMPETENCE OF THE NURSES WHO CARED FOR US.
AS YOUR MENTORS PREPARE TO BESTOW YOUR PEN, THEY ARE GIVING YOU A SYMBOL OF THE CAMARADERIE AND PROFESSIONALISM THAT CHARACTERIZES THE NURSING COMMUNITY.
THIS TRADITION OF WELCOME HONORS THE PAST, CELEBRATES THE PRESENT AND INSPIRES THE FUTURE.
IT IS A GESTURE THAT REMINDS YOU THAT YOU WILL NOT WALK ALONE IN THIS PROFESSION OF CARE, COMPASSION, INTEGRITY, AND LIFELONG LEARNING.
ALSO, YOU DID NOT GET HERE ALONE.
I WANT TO EXTEND MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO THE FACULTY AND STAFF OF THE NURSING PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BE EFFECT.
YOUR DEDICATION TO NURSING AND
[00:10:01]

AND YOUR PRESENCE HERE IS A TESTAMENT TO THE IMPORTANCE OF LOVE AND ENCOURAGEMENT ON A JOURNEY TO SUCCESS GRADUATES.
AS YOU EMBARK ON THIS NEW CHAPTER OF YOUR LIVES, MY HEART GOES WITH YOU.

ADAM FLORES, THIS SHOULD BE GOOD.
WOW, LOOK AT YOU ALL OUT THERE.
A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR OUR CLASS OF 20, 24 NURSES.
WELL GOOD MORNING LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
AS THEY SAID, MY NAME IS ADAM FLORES AND ON MY ON BEHALF OF MY FELLOW NURSING GRADUATES, I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU ALL TO THE PINNING CEREMONY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BEAUFORT NURSING CLASS OF 2024.
INDEED CHANCELLOR, DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, FACULTY AND STAFF, THANK YOU FOR HELPING US PUT ON SUCH AN AMAZING CEREMONY FOR OUR CLASS.
TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN ATTENDANCE, THANK YOU FOR HELPING US.
THANK YOU FOR HELPING OH SORRY TO OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN ATTENDANCE, THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS MOMENT WITH US.
YOUR PRESENCE HERE TODAY IS TRULY APPRECIATED AND TO OUR LOVED ONES WHO CANNOT BE HERE TODAY, WHETHER BACK HOME OR AROUND THE WORLD WATCHING ONLINE OR SADLY THOSE WHO ARE NO LONGER WITH US, BUT CELEBRATE WITH US IN SPIRIT.
KNOW THAT YOU ARE IN OUR HEARTS AND WE LOVE YOU.
IT IS TRULY AN HONOR TO STAND BEFORE YOU TODAY AS OUR CLASS SPEAKER AND I HOPE YOU DON'T MIND.
BUT I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE A FEW MINUTES OF YOUR DAY TO TELL YOU ABOUT OUR JOURNEY AND BRAG ABOUT MY COLLEAGUES AND I PROMISE I WON'T KEEP, I'LL KEEP THIS SHORT.
I KNOW I'VE GOT PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT HAVE ALREADY STARTED THE STOPWATCH SO WE'LL, WE'LL TRY TO MAKE THIS SHORT AND SWEET, BUT BEFORE I BEGIN, CAN I JUST SAY, OH MY GOD, I'M SO GLAD THIS JOURNEY IS OVER.
FOR YOU SEE, MY FRIENDS AND I, WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH ONE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY.
I'VE COME TO THINK OF IT KIND OF LIKE THE TWO AND A HALF YEAR ROLLER COASTER THAT NO ONE COULD HAVE EVER PREPARED US FOR.
THERE WAS THE INITIAL EXCITEMENT OF RECEIVING OUR ACCEPTANCE LETTER INTO THE PROGRAM.
THIS IS KIND OF LIKE STANDING IN LINE FOR THREE AND A HALF HOURS IN THE BAKING SUN, FINALLY MAKING UP TO THE NEXT ONE AND REALIZING YOU'RE THE NEXT THRILL SECRET OF JUMPING IN THE SEAT AND TAKE THAT THRILL RIDE.
WE WERE SO JOYFUL AND EXCITED WHEN WE GOT THERE AND STRAPPED IN.
WE DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO LOOK UP AT THE PASSENGERS DISEMBARKING, THE ROLLERCOASTER RIDE BEFORE US TO SEE THEIR WINDBLOWN HAIR, THEIR DISHEVELED CLOTHES, TEARS AND MASCARA ALL OVER THE PLACE.
WE JUST KNEW WE WERE THE NEXT ONES TO RIDE THE RIDE.
THEN THERE WAS OUR PREPARATORY BOOTCAMP WHERE WE RECEIVED OUR A TI BOOKS.
WE LEARNED AND RELEARNED CPR, WE WERE ADVISED BY FACULTY AND UPPERCLASSMEN WHAT TO EXPECT OVER THE COMING YEARS.
AND WE HEARD FOR THE FIRST OF WHAT IS UNDOUBTEDLY 9,476 TIMES,
[00:15:01]
BE SURE TO MAKE TIME FOR SELF-CARETHIS WAS LIKE THAT INITIAL ASCENT.
WHEN YOU START A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE, EVERYONE'S SMILING AS A ROLLER CHOKE TAKES OFF.
BUT AS WE START TO CLIMB A LITTLE HIGHER AND A LITTLE HIGHER, THOSE THOSE UH LOOKS OF EXCITEMENT AND JOY, THEY SLOWLY START TO TURN INTO NERVOUS GRINS.
AS WE LOOK AROUND AND THINK TO OURSELVES, THIS DIDN'T LOOK QUITE AS SCARY DOWN ON THE GROUND.
AND AS THOSE FINAL SLOW CLICKS OF THE TRACK PULLED US CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THE CREST OF THAT FIRST HILL, YOU WOULD'VE SEEN THOSE NERVOUS GRINS TURN INTO WIDE EYES.
LOOKS OF TERROR AS WE LOOK DOWN INTO THE ABYSS AND PLUMMET IS STRAIGHT INTO PATHOPHYSIOLOGY.
WE FOUND OURSELVES TRYING TO KEEP PACE WITH THE INFORMATION BEING THROWN AT US CARDIAC RESPIRATORY THERA SYSTEM.
SEE HOW EXCITED WE WERE AND IF PATHA WASN'T ENOUGH TO MAKE OUR HEAD SPIN, THERE WAS A LAB WHERE WE WHERE AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT YOU WOULD FIND ONE OF US MUMBLING THROUGH THE AIDED PROCESS.
KNOCK ON THE DOOR, HAND HYGIENE, INTRODUCE MYSELF.
HELLO, MY NAME IS, YOU GET THE PICTURE.
AS OUR INSTRUCTORS WATCHED US LIKE HAWKS, I SWEAR TO YOU, THE INSTRUCTORS SUPER GLUED THOSE GLOVES TOGETHER JUST TO MAKE US SWEAT.
OR YOU MIGHT JUST FIND US PRACTICING THE MANY SKILLS WE WOULD LATER APPLY DURING OUR CLINICAL ROTATIONS IN SIM LABS.
THAT SEMESTER ENDED STRONG THOUGH AS WE COMPLETED OUR FIRST CLINICAL ROTATION WHERE WE HAD THE CHANCE TO CARE FOR ELDERLY PATIENTS IN NURSING HOMES AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITIES IN THE AREA.
AND WHILE I'M SURE WE ALL CLEANED THE FIRST OF COUNTLESS HIGH ENDS, WE WILL INEVITABLY SEE DURING OUR LONG AND ILLUSTRIOUS CAREERS.
WHAT WE DID GET TO EXPERIENCE WAS OUR FIRST REAL TASTE OF CARING FOR PATIENTS.
SUMMER ARRIVED AND WE ALL CELEBRATED OUR SUCCESS.
THERE WERE SIDES OF RELIEF AS WE PROCLAIMED.
WE SURVIVED OUR FIRST SEMESTER OF NURSING SCHOOL, BUT WHAT WE DIDN'T REALIZE WAS THE RIDE HAD JUST BEGUN
WE WERE HIT IN THE FACE WITH A TWISTING DOUBLE LOOP TO LOOP OF MED-SURG.
ONE IN PHARMACOLOGY, MUCH LIKE A POINT IN THE ROLLERCOASTER WHERE YOU MIGHT LOSE YOUR WALLET OR KEYS.
WE HAD STUDENTS LOSING NAME BADGES.
STUDENTS WERE LOSING THEIR BREAKFAST ON THE WAY FROM THE LIBRARY TO CLASS IN THE MORNING BEFORE BIG TESTS.
AND I'M SURE MOST OF US LOST JUST A LITTLE BIT OF OUR SANITY ALONG THE WAY.
STILL OTHERS, I'M SURE LIKE ME, PROBABLY DIDN'T REALLY LISTEN TO THE INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE RIDE.
YOU KNOW THOSE INDIVIDUALS WHO FAILED TO PULL THEIR LAP BELT REALLY TIGHT OR PULL THE HARNESS DOWN ALL THE WAY.
THOSE OF US, WE PROBABLY FOUND OURSELVES JUST HANGING ON FOR DEAR LIFE, PRAYING TO GOD WE DIDN'T FALL OFF THE ROLLERCOASTER RIDE
THE REST OF THE RIDE, IF I'M HONEST, WAS PRETTY MUCH A BLUR AS WE THRASHED AROUND THE SWITCHBACKS OF OUR PEDS FAMILY COMMUNITY AND MENTAL HEALTH CLASSES.
ALL ALONG THE WAY THERE WERE MORE TESTS, MORE LABS, CLINICAL ROTATIONS, AND DAYS WHERE I FOR ONE, CROSSED MY FINGERS AND PRAYED THAT I WASN'T LEAD NURSE.
AS WE HEADED INTO SIM, 'CAUSE I
ALL ALONG WE WERE SIMPLY PLAYING.
DEAR GOD, PLEASE LET THIS RIDE END AND THAT BRINGS US HERE
SEE, THE RIDE HAS LEVELED OFF THAT LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.
WE ALL DESPERATELY PRAYED FOR.
IT SHINES BRIGHT AND WE HAVE ALL HEARD THAT SWEET, SWEET SOUND OF AS A ROLLERCOASTER RIDE COMES TO A STOP, THE SAFETY HARNESS RISES AND WE HEAR THE WORDS.
IT IS NOW SAFE TO EXIT THE RIDE FOR WE HAVE LEARNED A LOT OVER THE LAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS.
AND AS A SEASONED STUDENT MYSELF, I HAVE ENJOYED WATCHING THE ONCE DOE-EYED NEW NURSING STUDENTS.
I BEGAN THIS JOURNEY WITH GROW INTO THE CONFIDENT YOUNG MEN AND WOMEN SITTING BEFORE YOU TODAY.
NOW THAT THE RIDE IS OVER, I HOPE WE ALL TAKE JUST A FEW MOMENTS TO LOOK BACK AND REALIZE THAT IT WASN'T QUITE AS SCARY AS WE REALLY THOUGHT IT WAS.
WE'VE MADE A LOT OF MEMORIES ALONG THE WAY, AND I BELIEVE TIME WILL SHOW THAT THERE WERE MANY MORE HIGHS THAN THERE WERE LOWS.
I AM SO PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU, AND
[00:20:01]
THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT YOU WILL ALL GO ON TO DO GREAT AND AMAZING THINGS THROUGHOUT YOUR CAREER.NOW IT'S TIME FOR US TO WALK AWAY AS WE PREPARE TO CLIMB ON THE NEXT RIDE THAT AWAITS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US ON OUR JOURNEY GRADUATES.
WE HAVE BEEN THROUGH AND ACCOMPLISH SO MUCH DURING OUR TIME TOGETHER, BUT WE DIDN'T DO IT ALONE TO OUR FACULTY AND STAFF.
THANK YOU ALL FOR PROVIDING US THE KNOWLEDGE, THE SKILLS, AND THE CONFIDENCE NEEDED TO BE EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT.
NURSES TO OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS, THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING US.
YOU HAVE LIKELY SEEN THE BEST AND THE WORST OF OUR PERSONALITIES THROUGHOUT THIS ENTIRE PROCESS.
WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT, ENCOURAGEMENT, AND LOVE, NONE OF THIS WOULD'VE BEEN POSSIBLE TO MY FELLOW NURSING GRADUATES.
YOUR DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO ONE ANOTHER IS TRULY REMARKABLE.
WE STOOD BY ONE ANOTHER THROUGH ALL THE CHAOS, OFFERING SHOULDERS TO CRY ON EARS TO VENT TO FIST BUMPS WHEN THERE WAS SUCCESSES AND SOFTWARES.
THAT SAID, IT'S GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT, NURSING CLASS OF 2024.
IT IS MY HONOR TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH YOU TODAY AS COLLEAGUES, BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, I AM BLESSED TO CALL YOU ALL FRIENDS.
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS ONE HECK OF A RIDE I WILL NEVER FORGET.
AND NOW IT IS MY ESTEEMED HONOR TO WELCOME UP OUR GUEST SPEAKER FOR THE DAY.
THIS IS A MAN WHO DRUG US KICKING, SCREAMING, AND CRYING THROUGH OUR FIRST SEMESTER OF NURSING SCHOOL, A MAN WHO IS SO SMART.
HALF THE WORDS THAT HE SAID WENT WAY ABOVE OUR HEADS.
BUT HE NEVER MISSED AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE CHANCE TO MAKE SURE WE UNDERSTOOD WHAT HE WAS TEACHING US.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I PREVENT TO YOU MR. DR.
SKIPPER, FACULTY, GUEST, FRIENDS, PARENTS, STUDENTS.
FOR THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW, I TEACH PATHOPHYS.
I THINK THAT WOULD BE VERY OBVIOUS.
SO I DO FOUR MONTHS OF WORK AND REST FOR EIGHT MONTHS, WHICH I NEED BADLY.
UM, SO BEFORE WE START, THERE ARE A COUPLE ADMINISTRATIVE THINGS I NEED TO GET OUT OF THE WAY.
NUMBER ONE, I DON'T STAND AT A PODIUM.
WELL, I'M NOT A PREACHER NOR A POLITICIAN
SO IF YOU CAN'T HEAR ME IN THE BACK, RAISE YOUR HAND, I'LL WEAR MY HEARING AIDS UP
NUMBER TWO, THERE ARE NO POWERPOINT SLIDES NOR WHITEBOARD.
HOW WE, HOW WE GONNA AND C, THE LAST ADMINISTRATIVE MARK IS YOUR RIGHT POSITION TO SPEAK TO.
I FEEL'S ANOTHER SURGEON GENERAL WARNING SHOULD BE PLACED OR POTENTIALLY SOMEBODY BE SAYING CAREFULLY GET CLIENT STAFF, ET CETERA, ET CETERA BY ATTENDING THIS.
THOSE THINGS OUT OF THE WAY, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE THE NURSES, BUT I WANT TO SPEND A COUPLE MINUTES
YOU HAVE SOMEONE THAT YOU CAN ASK.
SO WITHOUT ANY ADO, ALTHOUGH ADAM DID A GREAT JOB KIND OF SUMMARIZING PATHOPHYSIOLOGY, I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND YOU OF A COUPLE THINGS THAT WERE REMARKABLE FOR ME.
NUMBER ONE, MY MOST FAVORITE SLOT.
CLEARLY WE HAVEN'T FORGOTTEN THAT.
NUMBER TWO, MULTIPLE MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTIONS.
SELECT OUTTA FIVE CHOICES TO THREE CORRECT ANSWERS.
THERE WAS TO, THAT WAS PHENOMENAL UNTIL WE REALIZED THAT HE GIVES PARTIAL CREDIT.
THEN IT WAS, HEY, MAYBE WE CAN MAKE IT THROUGH THIS.
THE NEXT THING WAS HIS SECOND MOST FAVORITE SLIDE.
EVERYONE REMEMBER WHAT THAT YOU DON'T REMEMBER? I'LL REMIND YOU, REN AN ANNUAL.
WE STRUGGLED WITH THAT IMMENSELY.
OTHER THINGS THAT I REMEMBER WAS ONE COMING INTO QUIZZES, WHICH I GIVE ALMOST EVERY WEEK.
SAY A WORD, JUST GIVE US A TEST.
[00:25:01]
MY BRAIN.I, IN THIS CASE, THE COMPUTER.
AND THE LAST THING I REMEMBER, IT'LL NEVER BE SOMETHING THAT I'LL EVER FORGET.
NOW, CAREER 42 YEARS MEDICINE, I HONOR ONE STUDENT ANNOUNCED TO ME THAT I NEED TO LET THEM LEAVE CLASS RIGHT NOW.
NURSING ASSESSMENT OR IN KEYNOTE SPEAKERS, COME TO GIVE ADVICE, UH, TELL SOME STORY.
RECOMMEND WHAT YOU DO IN THE FUTURE.
I'M GONNA DO ALL ANY OF THOSE THREE.
I'M ASK YOU TO DO THREE THINGS OR THINK ABOUT THREE THINGS AND THEN JUST START THEM IF YOU DON'T LIKE THEM, BECAUSE I THINK THEY'LL CHANGE YOUR LIFE BECAUSE THEY CHANGE MIND FOR YEARS PRACTICING MEDICINE.
AND I THINK THEY CAN DO THE SAME FOR YOU IN NURSING.
THE FIRST ONE IS TO TEACH YOURSELF.
YOU'RE GONNA SPEND TIME, OBVIOUSLY IN CLASSES BEING TAUGHT.
YOU'RE NOW GOING TO AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU ARE GONNA BE RESPONSIBLE.
IT'S KIND OF FUNNY BEING DO THINGS BUT NOT BE RESPONSIBLE.
DIFFERENT BEING THE ONE RESPONSIBLE.
I THINK WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU GONNA LEARN FROM PEOPLE WHO STANDING AROUND YOU.
PEOPLE ARE GONNA TEACH YOU SOMETHING EVERY DAY.
I WOULD ASK THAT YOU TAKE TIME TO WRITE DOWN, YOU TALKED ABOUT THIS BEFORE.
YOU COME ACROSS AS YOU DUNNO, GO HOME.
TAKE FIVE OF THEM, HOW MANY OF YOU TAKE THEM? TAKE, UM, AND SPEND THREE TO FIVE MINUTES LEARNING THAT NOT SOMEONE ELSE, JUST FOR YOURSELF KNOWLEDGE AT THE END OF THE WHOLE CAREER, YOU'LL BE JUST A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE.
SO THAT'S THE FIRST THING I WOULD ASK IS FIND A WAY THAT YOU CAN GO HOME AFTER WORK, NOT BURN UP ALL YOUR TIME, BUT SPEND FIVE MINUTES DOING SOMETHING TO MAKE YOURSELF SMARTER THAT SOMEONE ELSE DIDN'T TEACH YOU.
AND THAT HABIT THEN WILL GO ON FOR THE REST OF YOUR CAREER.
THE NEXT ONE IS ASK, LISTEN, AND ASSESS.
NOW THAT CAN COVER A BROAD CATEGORY, YOUR HONOR, TO BE STRESSFUL.
AND UH, THE REASON I SAY THAT IS BECAUSE I WANT YOU TO ASK, LISTEN, AND ASSESS NOT THE PEOPLE AROUND IN STRESSFUL SITUATION A OF THEIR PEOPLE.
WE TELL STORIES ALL THE TIME, BUT WE DUNNO ABOUT US AFTER THE FACT.
YOU ASSESS WHAT EVERYONE DID IN STRESSFUL SITUATION, NOT FIVE MINUTES TO YOURSELF.
ASK YOURSELF, YOU WHAT YOU DID REALLY WELL, DON'T YOURSELF, BUT YOU DID REALLY WELL.
WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO QUESTION THEN I'D LIKE YOU TO SESSION YOURSELF, YOUR BIGGEST CRITIC IN HEALTHCARE.
YOU'LL ALWAYS BE HARDER AROUND YOURSELF.
SO TAKE WHAT YOU GET AND LISTEN, BE LYING.
I'D LYING YOU IF I TOLD THERE AREN SITUATIONS THAT, UM, HIGHER THAT.
SO YOU YOURSELF, AS YOU DO THAT, YOU'LL PRO YOU'LL CHANGE YOU TIME SELF.
THE LAST THING I WOULD LIKE YOU TO DO IS FIND A MENTOR.
NOW IN THESE AND TIME PEOPLE SIGN.
I'M NOT ASKING YOU TO TAKE ASSIGNMENT.
YOU TO FIND PROFESSIONAL PERSON, EXTREMELY DEDICATED, EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGEABLE, AND EXTREMELY CONFIDENT.
WALK UP TO THEM AND ADVISE THEM POLITELY THAT THEY THAT GO WELL,
[00:30:01]
IN MY INTERNSHIP, I CHOSE TWO PEOPLE, BOTH WHO PAID ME FOR THREE YEARS AND A LITTLE ME ALL THIRD.BUT THEY WERE MOST REALLY COMPASSIONATE FROM MY PERSPECTIVE, KNOWLEDGE, I PART PHENOMENAL VISION.
AND TO THIS DAY, I STILL SPEAK TO THOSE PEOPLE.
BUT MORE IMPORTANT AS YOU, YOU LOOK UP TO WHO SHARES YOUR VALUES, YOU PERSON, WE'RE GONNA WORK WITH THEM, TRY TO SOLVE.
AND THOSE ARE THE THREE THINGS.
TEACH YOURSELF, ASK, LISTEN, AND ASSESS AND BE A MENTOR.
THAT'S BEEN AN INTERESTING RIDE FOR TWO AND A HALF YEARS, BELIEVE IT OR NOT, EVEN THOUGH LEFT THE CLASS SOPHOMORE YEAR, I TRACKED MANY, MANY FOR TWO YEARS.
I HAD INFORMATION ON YOU FOR PEOPLE I DIDN'T INFORMATION
MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF YOURSELF TODAY, TOMORROW, FOLLOWING DAY IS ALL ABOUT YOU.
PEOPLE SITTING BEHIND YOU THAT ARE PRIVATE YOU AND SUPPORT YOU.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, YOU'RE GONNA GO AND EVERYONE SAYS THIS, YOU'RE GONNA GO FROM TOP ON MONDAY OR SO TO THE HOPE THAT YOU A LONG CAREER NEED NURSES, CONFIDENT, DEDICATED NURSES.
AND I REMIND YOU THAT BECAUSE OF NURSING, I'M ABLE TO STAND UP IN BECAUSE IN MY I QUESTION MY LIFE, A NURSE HAS TAKEN ME, BUT I HAVE DECIDED TO CHALLENGE THE BOUNDARIES OF LIFE HAS TAKEN ME AND BROUGHT ME BACK FROM THE STAFF I THE NURSE TO SAVED MY LIFE.
SO NOW WE'RE GETTING TO THE PORTION OF OUR CEREMONY WHERE WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING, UM, OUR NURSE PINNING.

[01:00:11]
FOR THE NEXT AWARD, I'D LIKE TO INVITE PROFESSOR EMTA, UM, SUSAN WILLIAMS TO COME TO THE STAGE.AND THIS IS TO, UM, PRESENT THE SUSAN WILLIAMS SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD.
THIS AWARD GOES TO DEBBIE COOPER.
SO THE SUSAN SUSAN C. WILLIAMS SPIRIT OF NURSING AWARD IS FOR THE STUDENT FOR REACHING THE STAR, REACHING FOR THE STARS, AND OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO ACHIEVE ONE'S PERSONAL BEST.
THAT SUCCESS IS NOT MEASURED SO MUCH BY THE POSITION THAT ONE IN ONE'S LIFE, BUT RATHER BY THE HOPE OF THE OBSTACLES THAT HE OR SHE HAS.
YOU HAVE PERSEVERED AND PERSEVERED WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF YOUR VISION.
AND YOU HAVE DONE THIS WITH AMAZINGLY HIGH SPIRITS ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND RESILIENCE, ALL THE WHILE UPLIFTING THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU AND I, ANYONE WHO SO HONORED TO PRESENT OF IT, I WOULD LIKE TO NOW INVITE DR.
ERIC SKIPPER, PROVOST AND EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR ACADEMIC ACADEMIC AFFAIRS TO THE STAGE TO PROVIDE THE CLOSING REMARKS FOR TODAY'S CEREMONY.
AND SO THIS DAY IS FOR OUR NURSING GRADUATES.
BUT TO START, UM, I WOULD LIKE TO ASK BRIEFLY FOR TWO REASONS THAT OUR NURSING FACULTY STAND AND REMAIN STANDING FOR JUST A MOMENT.
ALL OUR NURSING FACULTY, INCLUDING THOSE ON THE STAGE, UH, FIRST FIRST THEY WANNA DO IS, UH, ESPECIALLY YOUR NURSING GRADUATES, TO GIVE THEM A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR ALL THAT THEY'VE DONE.
THE SECOND REASON IS TO RECOGNIZE THIS FACULTY FOR HAVING NURSE.ORG NUMBER ONE, NURSING PROGRAM IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
CONGRATULATIONS, YOU THANK YOU.
AND THAT AWARD, BY THE WAY, WAS VOTED ON BY STUDENTS.
AND SO IT'S A REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENT.
UM, SO GIVES ME GREAT PLEASURE TO PROVIDE THESE REMARKS.
I WANT TO THANK, UM, ADAM FLORES.
I REALLY APPRECIATED THE ROLLERCOASTER ANALOGY.
I WOULD SAY YOU GUYS ARE GETTING OFF, BUT YOU'RE GETTING BACK ON AGAIN, SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
CLINT BUTLER, WHOSE ADVICE, NOT JUST PROFESSIONAL, I HEARD A LOT OF, UH, PERSONAL ADVICE AND A LOT OF WISDOM THERE AS WELL.
UM, TODAY, UH, I RECOGNIZE THIS PLACE THAT WE'RE IN.
[01:05:01]
I THINK IT'S GREAT TO HAVE THIS EVENT COME BACK TO BEAUFORT CAMPUS.I WOULD LIKE TO TO NOTE THAT, UM, JUST HOW OFTEN HISTORY SEEMS TO CIRCLE BACK AND REPEAT ITSELF.
SO, UM, I WAS READING LAST NIGHT, UH, TRYING TO THINK OF WHAT I WAS GONNA TALK ABOUT.
LARRY ROLAND, HE IS USCB, DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR EMERITUS, AND HE WROTE REMARKS FOR THE REDEDICATION, THE REDEDICATION OF THE BEAUFORT COLLEGE BUILDING.
THAT'S THAT FOUR PILLAR BUILDING RIGHT THERE.
IT'S A GREAT PLACE FOR PICTURES ONCE I FINISHED TALKING.
BUT HE, HE WROTE THE REDEDICATION FOR THAT BUILDING.
AND, UM, HE DELIVERED THAT IN NOVEMBER, 2000, WHICH IS BEFORE SOME OF YOU WERE BORN.
BUT DID YOU KNOW THAT DURING THE, UH, CIVIL WAR, THAT WOULD, THAT BUILDING WAS USED AS A HOSPITAL FOR THE US NAVY IN PARTICULAR, AFTER THEY HAD TAKEN OVER BEAUFORT AND THE SEA ISLANDS.
SO, UM, WHO WOULD'VE KNOWN THAT 163 YEARS LATER ISH, THERE WOULD BE DOZENS OF HIGH SCHOOL.
DOZENS OF COLLEGE GRADUATES FROM, FROM A BSN PROGRAM, JUST 500 YARDS AWAY GRADUATING.
SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL.
THEY COULD HAVE REALLY USED YOU BACK THEN.
THE OTHER LITTLE TIDBIT THAT'S RELEVANT IS THAT IN THE ANTEBELLUM ERA, WHICH PRECEDED THE CIVIL WAR, AND, AND, AND, UH, PROFESSOR ROLAND POINTS THIS OUT ALSO, THAT BEAUFORT COLLEGE, WHAT THIS USED TO BE, FUNCTION LIKE A MODERN JUNIOR COLLEGE WITH GRADUATES CONTINUING ON TO HARVARD, GALE BROWN, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA AND OTHER PLACES.
AND I'LL SAY THAT USC BUFORT IS DOING THE SAME THING TODAY AS OUR STUDENTS ARE GETTING ADMITTED FOR THEIR NEXT ASSIGNMENTS IN SOME OF THE MOST WONDERFUL PLACES IN THE NATION, INCLUDING DUKE AND VANDERBILT, JOHNS HOPKINS, EMORY, UM, AUGUSTA UNIVERSITY, MUSC, OTHER GREAT PLACES.
AND THAT'S JUST EVEN IN THE MOST, UH, RECENT TWO OR THREE YEARS.
SO CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL.
OF COURSE, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS, UM, WILL NOT BE CONTINUING ON SPECIFICALLY TO HIGHER EDUCATION, BUT JOINING THE WORKFORCE, JUMPING RIGHT IN.
AND CHANCELLOR PANNU AND OTHER OCCASIONS HAS TALKED ABOUT HOW NURSING IS THE MOST RESPECTED PROFESSION OUT THERE.
AND I'LL, I'LL POINT OUT ALSO, IT'S ONE OF THE MOST MOBILE PROFESS UH, PROFESSIONS THAT YOU GUYS, WHEN YOU GO OUT IN THE WORLD, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE LOTS OF OPTIONS.
I'M SO PLEASED THAT SO MANY OF YOU'RE STAYING IN THE LOW COUNTRY.
WE ALL ARE VERY EXCITED FOR ALL THAT YOU'RE ALL DOING, BUT YOU HAVE GREAT MOBILITY.
AND SO I WOULD SAY THAT'S NOT YOU GUYS BEING IN A LUCKY POSITION, BUT HAVING EARNED IT, AND IT MAKES US INCREDIBLY PROUD.
UM, HOW, HOW YOU'RE ABLE TO JUMP, GO OUT OF HERE AND GO TO THE NEXT THING, WHICH ARE, UM, ANYTHING FROM HOSPITALS TO SCHOOLS, PHYSICIANS OFFICES, UH, HOME HEALTHCARE, CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES, YOU NAME IT, YOU HAVE EARNED IT.
UM, I KNOW THAT YOUR NURSING FACULTY ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF THAT.
AND SO, AS YOU NEWLY MEANT, USTB NURSING GRADUATES EMBARK ON A CAREER OF SERVICE TO OTHERS.
I'M REMINDED OF A QUOTE ATTRIBUTED TO THAT FAMOUS PERSON NAMED ANONYMOUS THAT SAYS, SAVE ONE LIFE.
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, BEAUFORT BSN CLASS OF 2024.
THIS CONCLUDES THIS MORNING'S CEREMONY.
ON BEHALF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BEAUFORT NURSING DEPARTMENT, WE'D LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING.
PLEASE REMAIN SEATED UNTIL THE OFFICIAL PARTY HAS DEPARTED THIS STAGE.
YOU ARE WATCHING BC TV LIVE, WORK, PLAY.
I'M THE OFF PARK RANGER HERE AT DREW ISLAND STATE PARK.
[01:10:15]
HERE WE ARE AT DROWN STATE PARKS MARINA.I AM OVER MANAGING THE SLIPS HERE AT THE MARINA.
48 OF 'EM ARE 25 BY 15 FOOT SLIPS, AND THEN WE HAVE TWO 50 FOOTER SLIPS.
UM, I'VE BEEN OVER THE MARINA PROGRAM FOR A FEW YEARS NOW, AND, UH, WHEN I FIRST STARTED WE HAD EIGHT SLIPS FILLED OUT OF 50.
AND, UM, AFTER RUNNING IT FOR ABOUT 13 MONTHS, WE WERE ABLE TO REACH FULL OCCUPANCY.
UM, AND AS OF RIGHT NOW, I'VE HAD A WAIT LIST WITH ABOUT 15 EVER SINCE.
UM, WE GIVE SPECIAL OFFERS ON, UH, SLIP PRICES FOR THE 25 BY 15 FOOT SLIPS.
UM, IF YOU, YOU CAN DO A SIX MONTH OR A 12 MONTH IS THE ONLY TWO WE OFFER.
IF YOU DO THE 12 MONTH AND YOU CHOOSE TO PAY UP FRONT, YOU GET A 10% DISCOUNT.
IT'S $2,700 RATHER PAYING, UM, MONTH BY MONTH.
IT'S TWO 50 A MONTH, WHICH ADDS UP TO THREE GRAND.
AND THEN THE SIX MONTH LEASE IS $1,500.
UM, WHETHER YOU PAY IT ALL UP FRONT OR IN $250 PAYMENTS, I'M RESPONSIBLE FOR GENERATING INVOICES FOR OUR CURRENT LEASERS AS WELL AS SETTING UP NEW CONTRACTS, UM, AS WELL AS RESPONSIBLE FOR CLEANING OF THESE PEDESTALS, CHECKING THE UTILITIES, THE WATER, THE POWER.
WE HAD A COLD SNAP RECENTLY HAD TO MAKE SURE THAT, UH, I SET A DRIP SO THESE WOULDN'T BE WITHOUT, UM, RUNNING WATER FOR THE, UM, PEOPLE THAT COME OUT HERE OFTEN.
UM, AS WELL AS, UM, YOU KNOW, KEEPING UP WITH THE LEASERS THEMSELVES AND GETTING TO KNOW 'EM ON A FACE-TO-FACE BASIS.
AND KNOWING, UM, KNOWING WHO I HAVE HERE AT THE MARINA, WE HAVE A FEW REGULARS, UM, AND THEY'RE A VITAL PART IN KEEPING THE, UH, MARINA UP TO DATE.
THEY LET ME KNOW IF SOMEONE'S BOATS COME LOOSE OR IF THERE'S BEEN DAMAGE TO A STORM.
UM, THE WATER'S DOWN RIGHT NOW, SO IT'S, UH, UM, IT IS A BIT OF AN ISSUE KEEPING TRACK OF, UM, THE SAFETY OF THESE BOATS.
UM, THE MARINA'S LIKE MY BABY, I'VE HAD A CHANCE TO, UM, WATCH IT GROW.
UM, A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY ABOUT THE MARINA.
UM, WE HAD AN OLD MARINA THAT USED TO BE RIGHT HERE.
UM, AND THEN IN 2008 WE HAD A REALLY BAD STORM THAT CAUSED ENOUGH DAMAGE THAT OVER THE YEARS AFTER THAT, UM, THE MARINA BEGAN TO SINK.
UM, LATER WE GOT THE BUDGET TO REDO THE MARINA, UM, WHICH IS WHAT YOU SEE HERE, AS WELL AS REDOING THE, UH, BATHHOUSE UP ON THE HILL, REMODELED ALL THE BATHROOMS, UM, SHOWERS, ALL THAT GOOD STUFF, ADDED HEAT AND AIR TO IT.
SO NEXT WE'RE GONNA GO TO ANOTHER FACILITY WHERE I'LL DEMONSTRATE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES I HAVE AS OUR SAFETY OFFICER HERE AT ALLEN STATE PARK.
HERE WE ARE AT DRY ALLENS GAS STOCK RIGHT NEXT TO OUR TACKLE SHOP.
UM, AND HERE I'M GONNA SHOW YOU ONE OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES AS SAFETY OFFICER IS CHECKING ALL OF OUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.
UM, THIS IS THE BIGGEST ONE WE HAVE ON PARK.
UM, IT'S RATED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE GAS STOCK.
AND WHAT WE DO WHEN WE INSPECT A FIRE EXTINGUISHER, UM, IS FIRST YOU TAKE IT OFF ITS STAND AND YOU CHECK THE GAUGE, UM, SEE IF IT'S NOT UNDER OR OVERCHARGED.
BUT THE MAIN THING THAT YOU WANT TO CHECK, UM, AS SOMEONE WHO'S NOT A, UM, A CERTIFIED FIRE TECH IS, UM, IF YOU TURN IT UPSIDE DOWN, LIKE SO IF THE WEIGHT SHIFTS GRADUALLY, THAT MEANS YOU KNOW THAT THE CONTENTS ISN'T CLUMPED UP TOGETHER.
YOU CAN KEEP DOING THAT JUST TO SEE, BUT IF YOU FEEL A BIG PLUMP, THAT MEANS IT'S CLUMPED UP TOGETHER.
UM, AND I DO THIS WITH ALL 42 FIRE EXTINGUISHERS.
WE HAVE ON PARK, WE HAVE 'EM IN THE CAMPGROUNDS, EVERY FACILITY, OUR CABINS, VILLAS, UM, OUR TACKLE SHOP, AS WELL AS THE GAS STOCK.
AND THE MAIN THING IS TO CHECK THAT AND TO CHECK THE CHARGE.
AND THEN WHEN YOU'RE DONE, YOU CAN JUST HANG IT BACK UP AND THEN YOU CAN SIGN OFF ON THIS SPECIFIC MONTH, UM, WHICH THIS IS JANUARY.
UM, AND I'LL NOTE THAT ONCE A YEAR I HAVE, UM, A CERTIFIED FIRE TECH COME OUT AND HAVE THESE SERVICED.
I JUST HAD THIS ONE SERVICED, UM, IN DECEMBER, RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS.
SO THIS ONE'S PRETTY MUCH GOOD FOR A WHOLE NOTHER YEAR.
UM, ANOTHER ASPECT OF BEING THE SAFEST OFFICER HERE AT DREW ISLAND STATE PARK IS, UM, FACILITY INSPECTIONS, MAKING SURE EVERYTHING'S SAFE, MAKING SURE WE'RE STAYING UP TO DATE ON, UM, SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE ON OUR, UM, HVAC, ON ANYTHING THAT NEEDS IT, LOOKING FOR STRUCTURAL DAMAGE, LOOKING FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT NEED REPLACING OR ATTENTION.
UM, AND OF COURSE FILING THE, UM, MONTHLY PAPERWORK FOR OUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER INSPECTIONS AS WELL AS THE FACILITIES.
UM, SO WE CAN STAY UP TO DATE AND BE OFFICIAL.
NEXT, WE'RE GONNA GO AND WE'RE GONNA TALK ABOUT THE LAKE.
HERE WE ARE ON OUR MAIN CAUSEWAY BRIDGE HERE AT DREW ISLAND STATE PARK.
UM, PERSONALLY THIS IS MY FAVORITE PART ABOUT COMING TO WORK, IS DRIVING ACROSS THIS CAUSEWAY BRIDGE AND LOOKING OUT AT THE LAKE EVERY DAY.
UM, AS I SAID EARLIER, THE LAKE'S DOWN PRETTY LOW RIGHT NOW.
UM, EVERY WINTER THEY DROP THE LAKE A FEW FEET,
[01:15:01]
BUT THIS YEAR IS THE 10 YEAR LOW.EVERY 10 YEARS THEY DROP THE LAKE SIGNIFICANTLY LOW, UM, TO KILL AN INVASIVE HYDRILLA PLANT AS WELL AS FOR PEOPLE TO WORK ON THEIR DOCKS.
AND SINCE THE DAM AND THE TOWERS ARE SO OLD, IT GIVES THEM A CHANCE TO MAINTENANCE THOSE AS WELL.
UM, LAKE MURRAY IS 50,000 ACRES, UM, OF MANMADE LAKE AND DR.
UM, BENEFITS FROM THIS LAKE HEAVILY.
UM, IT BRINGS SO MUCH, SO MANY GUESTS TO OUR PARK.
UM, THEY COME TO HANG OUT HERE AT THE SHELTERS.
UM, PITCH A HAMMOCK LAY OUT AT THE LITTLE BEACHY AREA WE HAVE AT OUR OLD OFFICE.
UM, IT BRINGS A LOT OF VISITORS COME SUMMERTIME.
UM, ALSO IN THE SUMMERTIME, UM, BRINGS ALL OF OUR BIG GAME TOURNAMENTS.
DREW ISLAND'S KNOWN FOR ALL OF HIS FISHING TOURNAMENTS.
WE HAVE 'EM YEAR ROUND JUST ABOUT EVERY WEEKEND.
UM, TO HIGHLIGHT ONE BIG ONE, DREW ISLAND GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO HOST THE WORLD BASS CHAMPIONSHIP WHERE WE HOSTED 25 COUNTRIES, UM, FOR A WEEK AND WATCH THEM SHOOT OUT EVERY DAY AND COME IN AND SAW THE BIG WEIGH-INS.
AND THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE MANY BIG ONES THAT WE HAVE HERE.
UM, THAT'S A BIG JOB FOR OUR OPENING SHIFT HERE AT DREW ISLAND IS TO, UM, DIRECT ALL THE BOATERS FOR THOSE TOURNAMENTS AND, AND PARK 'EM AND MAKE SURE THAT WE CAN HOUSE ALL THOSE FISHERMEN FOR, UH, FOR THOSE TOURNAMENTS.
WE HAVE THE BIG BASS, UH, CHALLENGE AND WE HAVE A LITTLE BUNCH OF SMALL TOURNAMENTS RANGING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 15 BOATS ALL THE WAY UP TO 150.
IF YOU'LL NOTICE, OVER HERE IS OUR FRONT CAMPGROUND, WHICH IS NEWLY RENOVATED.
UM, IT RECEIVED, UM, UPGRADES FOR ELECTRICAL, UP TO 50 AMP SERVICE, UM, NEW WATER, AND EVEN ADDED, UH, SEWER HOOKUPS AS WELL.
SO, UM, WHEN THIS ONE OPENS UP, HOPEFULLY EARLY SPRING, UM, IT'LL BE OPEN FOR THE GUESTS TO ENJOY A BRAND NEW CAMPGROUND WITH, UM, BRAND NEW FACILITIES.
UM, NEXT WE'RE GONNA GO AND WALK THROUGH ONE OF OUR VILLAS AND MAKE SURE IT'S READY FOR A GUEST CHECK-IN HERE.
WE ARE AT DREW ISLANDS VILLAS.
UM, THIS IS VILLA ONE BEHIND ME, BUT WE HAVE FIVE VILLAS, UM, VILLAS ONE, THREE AND FIVE ARE THREE BEDROOMS AND VILLAS TWO AND FOUR ARE TWO BEDROOMS. UM, THESE ARE A WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY FOR PEOPLE THAT YOU, YOU KNOW, AREN'T INTO THE, THE CAMPING LIFE OR THE TENT LIFE, UM, GLAMPING AS PEOPLE CALL IT.
UM, THESE PRICES RANGE ANYWHERE BETWEEN 1 35 A NIGHT TO MAYBE EVEN, UH, AS FAR AS TWO 50 A NIGHT, DEPENDING ON TIME OF YEAR, TWO BEDROOM, THREE BEDROOM.
UM, IF IT'S A WEEKEND WEEKDAY OR IF IT'S THE ONLY ONE LEFT.
UM, BILL IS ONE, ONE AND TWO ARE THE NEWLY REMODELED INSIDE AND OUT, NEW FURNITURE, NEW PAINT FLOORS, ALL THAT GOOD STUFF.
UM, THERE IS A DOCK BEHIND VILLA ONE.
IT IS THE ONLY DOCK THAT WE HAVE, UM, HERE AT THE VILLAS, BUT IT IS A COMMUNAL DOCK.
AND THE REASON THAT IT'S, IT'S ONLY BEHIND VILLA ONE IS BECAUSE VILLA ONE IS OUR HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE VILLA.
UM, BUT ANY VILLA CAN USE THAT DOCK AS THEY PLEASE.
UM, BUT WE'RE HERE TO DO A WALKTHROUGH OF THE VILLA, SO IF YOU WANNA FOLLOW ME, WE'LL GO AHEAD AND DO A WALKTHROUGH AND, UH, I'LL LET YOU KNOW EVERYTHING THAT GOES IN WITH THAT.
SO, AS YOU'LL SEE, I USED A KEY CARD.
WE WERE ABLE TO INSTALL, UM, KEY CARD LOCKS AT ALL OF OUR VILLAS IN OUR CAMPER CABINS, AS WELL AS THE BATHHOUSES FOR THOSE.
UM, MAKES IT EASIER IN CASE, UH, OUR METAL KEYS GET LOST.
UM, AND IT'S BEEN A REAL, UH, TREAT TO USE.
SO THIS IS THE INSIDE OF VILLA ONE.
UM, WHAT I'M IN HERE TO DO IS TO WALK THROUGH IT AND MAKE SURE THAT IT'S READY FOR A GUEST, UM, DOWN TO THE NITPICKY STUFF.
UM, MAKE SURE THAT THE, UM, IT WAS CLEANED PROPERLY AND THAT WE DON'T HAVE ANY COMPLAINTS OUT OF OUR GUESTS WHILE THEY STAY WITH US.
SO THEY HAVE THE BEST, UM, EXPERIENCE, UM, TOTAL.
SO WE ALWAYS, UH, CHECK THE FIREPLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT IT WORKS GREAT, WHICH IT DOES REMOTE'S PROGRAMMED AND EVERYTHING.
I'M TURN THAT BACK OFF BECAUSE IT IS A LITTLE WARM IN HERE.
UM, WE TRY TO CHECK EVERY LAMP TO MAKE SURE THAT IT LIGHTS UP.
UM, EVERY LIGHT IN THE VILLA, WE WANNA MAKE SURE WORKS.
UM, OF COURSE WE, WE CHECK THE TV, MAKE SURE THEY WORK.
AND IN THE BATHROOM WE'RE GONNA CHECK AND MAKE SURE ALL THE LIGHTS WORK LIKE THE REST OF THE VILLA.
MAKE SURE THAT ALL THE TOWELS HAVE BEEN, UH, PUT IN PROPERLY AND, AND STORED.
WE WANNA CHECK THE CLEANLINESS OF THE, UH, THE TUBS AND MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S NO DIRT HAIR OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT.
WE WANNA MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD.
UM, WE WANNA MAKE SURE THAT, UH, WE HAVE RUNNING WATER, FLUSH THE TOILETS, YOU KNOW, CHECK BEHIND, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING'S CLEAN.
THEN WE GO IN TO CHECK IN THE FIRST BEDROOM.
[01:20:01]
I LIKE TO DO IT IN A BIG CIRCLE SO I DON'T MISS ANYTHING WALKING THROUGH THESE VILLAS.WE CHECK ALL THE DRAWERS TO MAKE SURE THAT A GUEST DIDN'T LEAVE ANYTHING BEHIND IN THE PREVIOUS DAY.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, WE WANT TO CHECK UNDER THE BEDS TO MAKE SURE THERE'S NOTHING UNDER THERE THAT, UM, WILL CAUSING ISSUE FOR A GUEST.
CHECK AROUND IN THE NIGHTSTAND AS WELL.
WANNA RUN HER HAND ACROSS THE TABLE? MAKE SURE THERE'S NO DIRT OR CRUMBS LEFT FROM ANY PREVIOUS DAY.
WANNA CHECK THESE LIGHTS RIGHT HERE? MAKE SURE ALL THAT DON'T TURN ON.
WE'LL GO OUTSIDE REAL FAST AND WE'LL CHECK THE, UM, PORCH TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD.
MAKE SURE THE LIGHTS OUT HERE WORK FOR OUR GUESTS.
ALSO DO A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FIRE PIT.
MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING ON OUR OUTDOOR PATIOS WORK PROPERLY.
ONE, TWO, AND THREE ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT HAVE THIS, UH, OUTDOOR PATIO RIGHT NOW, BUT, UH, IT IS A PLAN FOR THE FUTURE TO HAVE THE REST OF THEM INSTALLED.
WE'LL GO BACK IN AND FINISH THE WALKTHROUGH.
SOMETIMES THERE'S SOME DISHES THAT ARE STILL LEFT IN HERE.
WE WANNA MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE, UM, CLEAN AND IF SO, PUT THEM AWAY, UM, AND WIPE DOWN ANYTHING THAT NEEDS IT.
UM, ON THE COUNTERS, WE WANT TO RUN OUR HAND ACROSS THE COUNTER, MAKE SURE THERE'S NO CRUMBS OR ANY RESIDUE STILL LEFT.
UM, AS WELL AS CHECKING THE MICROWAVE AS WELL.
YOU ALWAYS WANT TO CHECK THE DISH, MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S NO, UM, STUCK ON STAINS OR ANYTHING, ANY KIND OF SPATTER INSIDE THE MICROWAVE.
AND CHECKING EVERY CABINET TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NOTHING THAT SHOULDN'T BE IN THERE AND THAT EVERYTHING'S WHERE IT SHOULD BE.
THE MIRROR AND EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD IN HERE.
WE'LL MOVE ON TO THE LAST BEDROOM.
ALL RIGHT, NOW THIS WAS THE LAST ROOM IN THE VILLA TO WALK THROUGH.
NOW THAT EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD, I'LL RADIO THE OFFICE UP FRONT AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THE GUESTS CAN CHECK IN.
THANKS FOR JOINING ME TODAY HERE AT DRY ISLAND STATE PARK.
I'M GONNA GO BACK TO THE OFFICE AND FINISH UP SOME ADMINISTRATIVE STUFF WHERE I HEAD OUT FOR THE DAY.
UM, WHAT YOU SAW HERE TODAY WAS JUST A FEW OF THE MANY THINGS WE GET TO DO.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN CURIOUS WHERE YOUR DRINKING WATER COMES FROM AND HOW IT IS PURIFIED? YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT.
THE SAVANNAH RIVER, A MANMADE CHANNEL DIRECTS THE WATER ABOUT A HALF A MILE TO A RIVER PUMP STATION.
AT THIS STATION, THE WATER IS RAISED TO AN ELEVATION 26 FEET ABOVE THE RIVER LEVEL.
THE PUMP STATION IS CAPABLE OF PUMPING 55 MILLION GALLONS PER DAY AND SUPPLIES THE WATER FOR BOTH OF BUFORD JASPER WATER AUTHORITIES WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES FROM THE RIVER PUMP STATION.
THE WATER TRAVELS ANOTHER HALF MILE FLOWING DOWNHILL TO A RESERVOIR, WHICH CONTAINS 180 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER.
[01:25:01]
AS A HABITAT FOR MANY KINDS OF WILDLIFE.THERE ARE EVEN A PAIR OF AMERICAN BALD EAGLES THAT CALL THIS RESERVOIR HOME FROM THE RESERVOIR.
THE WATER FLOWS TO ONE OF TWO WATER TREATMENT FACILITIES COMBINED.
THEY HAVE A TOTAL WATER TREATMENT CAPACITY OF 44 MILLION GALLONS A DAY.
THIS IS BURG, WHICH CAN PRODUCE UP TO 15 MILLION GALLONS A DAY.
WATER IS PUMPED UP INTO A RAPID MIX TANK WHERE AAM AND LIME ARE INTRODUCED INTO THE WATER.
THE LIME ADJUSTS THE PH AND THE ALUM BEGINS THE PROCESS OF ATTRACTING FOREIGN PARTICLES TOO SMALL TO BE FILTERED.
THE PARTICLES CLUMP TOGETHER WITH THE ALUM FORMING LARGER PARTICLES THAT EVENTUALLY SINK TO THE BOTTOM OR CAN BE FILTERED OUT.
INSIDE THE PRAIRIE BURG LAB, A TECHNICIAN CAN RUN A TEST THAT SIMULATES THE RAPID MIX TANK TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF ALUM NEEDED FOR THE PARTICLES CALLED FLOCK TO FORM.
FROM THE RAPID MIX TANK, WATER THEN FLOWS INTO THE FIRST OF TWO FLOCCULATION BASINS WHERE THE WATER'S MOTION IS REDUCED, ALLOWING THE FLOCK PARTICLES TIME TO FORM LARGER PARTICLES.
AS TIME PROGRESSES, THE PARTICLES GET HEAVIER AND BEGIN TO SINK TO THE BOTTOM.
AS THE PARTICLES ARE SINKING, THE WATER FLOWS INTO SEDIMENTATION BASINS.
IN THE SEDIMENTATION BASINS, THE IMPURITIES SETTLE TO THE BOTTOM WHERE THEY'RE COLLECTED BY SWEEPS, AND THE CLEAN WATER EXITS THE TOP OF THE TANK ON ITS WAY TO THE NEXT STEP OF FILTRATION.
HERE YOU CAN SEE THE WATER, WHICH BY THIS STEP IN THE PROCESS IS ALREADY 95% CLEAN RISING OUT OF THE TOP OF THE WEIRS IN THE SEDIMENTATION BOOTH.
THE IMPURITIES THAT WERE COLLECTED BY THE SWEEPS ARE LATER PUMPED OUT OF THE SYSTEM INTO A HOLDING POND.
THE NEXT STEP FOR THE TREATED WATER IS FILTRATION.
THE WATER FLOWS INTO A LARGE TANK IN WHICH THE FLOOR IS A LARGE SAND AND ANTHRACITE FILTER.
GRAVITY PULLS THE WATER THROUGH THE FILTER, CAPTURING THE REMAINING SOLID IMPURITIES.
THE FINAL STEP AT BURG IS DISINFECTION BEAUFORT.
JASPER WATER AUTHORITY PRODUCES ITS OWN CHLORINE SOLUTION ON SITE FOR DISINFECTION.
IT IS INTRODUCED TO THE WATER AFTER FILTRATION AND BEFORE IT IS PUMPED OUT INTO THE DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM.
BACK IN THE LAB AT BURG, THERE ARE TECHNICIANS THAT TAKE HOURLY SAMPLES OF THE WATER AT ALL STAGES OF THE PROCESS TO ENSURE THE QUALITY REMAINS CONSISTENT.
AT THE SAME TIME, A COMPUTER SYSTEM MONITORS THE WATER QUALITY MINUTE BY MINUTE, 24 HOURS PER DAY, AND ALERTS TECHNICIANS OF ANY UNWANTED CHANGES IN THE WATER.
QUALITY TECHNICIANS MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE CHEMICAL DOSE OR WATER PRODUCTION RATE AS NEEDED.
MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL ALSO TAKE CARE OF CALIBRATION OF INSTRUMENTS AND MAINTENANCE OF EQUIPMENT, AND THIS ENTIRE PROCESS FROM START TO FINISH CONTINUES DAY AND NIGHT, 24 HOURS PER DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, AND 365 DAYS A YEAR PROVIDING YOU CLEAR, SAFE, CLEAN.
