THANK YOU.

SO AT THIS POINT I'M GOING TO INTRODUCE OUR COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER.

UM, AND OF COURSE THAT'S DR.

FRANK RODRIGUEZ.

YOU KNOW, UM, WE'RE SO, I'M SO GRATEFUL AND WE'RE SO LUCKY TO HAVE DR.

RODRIGUEZ BE OUR SPEAKER TODAY.

IT JUST STRUCK ME AS WE ARE PROCESSING UP HERE THAT EVERYBODY IS HEY, DR.

RODRIGUEZ.

HEY, IT'S ME.

HELLO.

HOW YOU DOING? HE'S FAMOUS.

SO WE'RE SO VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HIM HERE.

HE IS SUCH A GOOD PARTNER.

BUT LET ME READ THE, READ THE PARTS THAT I'M SUPPOSED TO READ.

UM, DR.

RODRIGUEZ, AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, AS A SUPERINTENDENT OF THE BURET COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT HERE IN THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN SOCIAL SCIENCE FROM FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY, A MASTER'S DEGREE IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION FROM FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY AND HIS DOCTORATE IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP FROM FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY.

BEFORE COMING TO BUFORT AS SUPERINTENDENT IN 2019, HE SPENT 26 YEARS SERVING THE SOUTH FLORIDA EDUCATION COMMUNITY IN A VARIETY OF CAPACITIES.

I WOULD LIKE TO NOTE THAT DR.

RODRIGUEZ

[00:30:01]

IS THE FIRST BEAUFORT COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT WHO IS FLUENT IN SPANISH AND HE HAS TWO CHILDREN THAT ARE ACTUALLY IN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM, UM, AND BUFORD IN BLUFFTON HIGH SCHOOL.

I BELIEVE I'D LIKE TO READ A QUOTE FROM DR.

RODRIGUEZ.

I AM I AM DRIVEN BY THE NOTION THAT A GREAT EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO A PERSON'S FUTURE.

AND I DEDICATE MYSELF TO ENSURING THAT EACH AND EVERY CHILD RECEIVES ONE.

I THINK THAT'S A GREAT CREED THAT WE ALL SHOULD LIVE BY DR.

RODRIGUEZ.

GOOD EVENING EVERYONE, AND THANK YOU, UH, PRESIDENT GOFF FOR THE OPPORTUNITY, UH, TO BE HERE TODAY AND THIS EVENING.

AND, UH, IT IS REALLY SUCH A PLEASURE FOR ME, UH, TO BE HERE WITH ALL OF YOU, UH, IN THIS BEAUTIFUL WATERFRONT PARK.

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY PRESIDENT GOFF PICKED AND ORCHESTRATED, UH, FOR US TODAY AS WE CELEBRATE THIS SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE IN YOUR LIVES.

UH, AND THANK YOU MS. WHITE FOR YOUR INSPIRING REMARKS.

YOU WILL BE A DOCTOR AND YOU WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE BECAUSE YOU'VE SAID IT AND BECAUSE YOU HAVE PROVEN YOUR COMMITMENT AND DEDICATION TO PERSEVERANCE AND ACCOMPLISHING GOALS.

BUT I STILL PLAN ON SEEING YOU AT YOUR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AND MANY OF YOU OTHERS OUT HERE TODAY.

IT'S STUDENTS LIKE YOU THAT REPRESENT THE SIGNIFICANCE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE MOMENTOUS PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND TCL.

MS. WHITE'S ACHIEVEMENTS ARE THE WONDERFUL CULMINATION OF OUR TWO ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TOGETHER, REPRESENTING THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES AT ONE'S FINGERTIPS FOR THE STUDENTS AND CITIZENS OF THE LOW COUNTRY.

THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING ALL THAT IS POSSIBLE HERE THIS EVENING.

AND THIS IS ONE OF THE KEY MESSAGES THAT I WANNA SHARE WITH YOU AND I HOPE YOU COME AWAY WITH TODAY, THAT WITH EDUCATION, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.

I THINK ABOUT MY OWN PERSONAL STORY AND MY GRANDFATHER'S WORDS WHEN I WAS A LITTLE KID, ALWAYS ASKING ME AND ASKING MY BROTHER IF WE WERE WORKING HARD AT SCHOOL AND IF WE WERE WORKING HARD TO GET A GREAT EDUCATION BECAUSE THAT WAS THE ONE THING THAT NOBODY COULD EVER TAKE AWAY FROM YOU.

AND IF HE SAID THAT ONCE A WEEK, HE SAID THAT FIVE TIMES A WEEK AND HE INGRAINED THAT INTO MY BROTHER AND I ON A REGULAR BASIS.

MY FAMILY CAME FROM CUBA IN THE LATE 1950S, EARLY 1960S, AND THAT WAS IN FACT MY GRANDFATHER'S SITUATION AT THAT TIME.

HE HAD TO LEAVE EVERYTHING BEHIND AND START FROM SCRATCH HERE IN THIS GREAT COUNTRY, BUT HE RELIED AND COUNTED ON HIS GRAD EDUCATION TO HELP HIM GET OFF THE GROUND AND GET HIM GOING.

AND SO THAT WAS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO HIM.

AND SOMETHING THAT, UH, I'VE ALWAYS REMEMBERED AND IS TRUE, UH, TO MY CORE.

AND EDUCATION NOT ONLY CHANGES OUR LIVES, BUT SHAVES THE FUTURE FOR THOSE AROUND US.

THIS IS WHY INSTITUTIONS LIKE TCL ARE SO IMPORTANT.

THE EDUCATION THAT YOU RECEIVED HERE EMPOWERS YOU TO CHART YOUR OWN COURSE AND MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY.

NO MATTER IF YOU'RE ENTERING THE WORKFORCE NOW OR GOING TO CONTINUE ON WITH YOUR EDUCATION, TCL HAS AFFORDED YOU A SEAMLESS PATHWAY MOVING FORWARD THAT IS NOT ONLY OF BENEFIT TO YOU, BUT TO OUR ENTIRE REGION.

MR. GOFF, PRESIDENT GOFF SHARED THAT 92% OF OUR GRADUATES HERE REMAIN HERE LOCALLY AND ARE THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR ECONOMY.

TCL PLAYS THIS CRUCIAL ROLE IN PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE WORKFORCE AND THEY PROVIDE OVER 60 DEGREE, UH, CERTIFICATES, DIPLOMAS PATHWAYS ACROSS CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT PROGRAMS. BUT WHAT MAKES THESE PROGRAMS SO IMPORTANT AND SPECIAL IS THAT THEY ALIGNED WITH THE NEEDS OF OUR CURRENT AND FUTURE REGIONAL INDUSTRIES RIGHT HERE IN THE LOW COUNTRY THAT REQUIRE SPECIALIZED TRAINING AND CERTIFICATIONS.

AND YOU GET THAT THROUGH YOUR EXPERIENCE HERE.

YOU, THE GRADUATES ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF OUR COMMUNITY.

IN OTHER WORDS, YOU MATTER AND YOU MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY.

I TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN KNOWING THAT NEARLY 300 BEAUFORD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT STUDENTS HAVE JUST COMPLETED THEIR SPRING COURSES AT TCL.

AND THAT TCL HAS A RECORD NUMBER OF DUAL ENROLL GRADUATES THIS YEAR FROM BEAUFORT, FROM COAN, FROM JASPER AND HAMPTON COUNTIES HERE THIS EVENING.

GRADUATES LIKE DARBY KINSEY FROM BATTERY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL, WHO WAS RECENTLY

[00:35:01]

NAMED A SOUTH CAROLINA TEACHING FELLOW AND RECIPIENT OF THE PAT CONROY'S LITERACY CENTER'S FUTURE EDUCATOR SCHOLARSHIP AND GRADUATES LIKE JANEA COX FROM WHALE BRANCH EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL, WHO HAS BEEN HONORED WITH THE TCL YOUNG ACHIEVER AWARD TO ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT ARE HERE TODAY.

YOUR CONTRIBUTION NOW EXTENDS BEYOND A HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM.

YOU ARE NOW WELL EQUIPPED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOCIAL, ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL WELLBEING OF THE LOW COUNTRY INDOOR, OUR COMMUNITY RIGHT HERE IN BEAUFORT.

I ENCOURAGE THE GRADUATES HERE TODAY TO TRULY EMBRACE THE NOTION OF BEING A LIFELONG LEARNER.

I HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO USE TCL AS A RESOURCE IN YOUR QUEST OR IN YOUR QUENCH AS YOU QUENCH YOUR THIRST FOR KNOWLEDGE.

THIS INSTITUTION IS NOT JUST FOR PEOPLE BEGINNING THEIR CAREERS, IT'S FOR ALL CITIZENS OF ALL AGES AT ANY STAGE OF LIFE.

PEOPLE LOOKING, UH, PEOPLE LOOKING TO ADVANCE THEIR CAREER WITH ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATIONS.

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO LEARN NEW SKILLS.

PEOPLE LIKE GRADUATE DIANE KEENE, WHO HAD A SUCCESSFUL FIRST CAREER BUT FOUND A NEW PASSION AND PROFESSION THROUGH THE CULINARY ARTS AND BAKING PROGRAM AT TCL TO EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE GRADUATES HERE TODAY.

IT IS AN HONOR AND TO STAND HERE BEFORE YOU AS YOU PREPARE TO RECEIVE YOUR CERTIFICATES, YOUR DIPLOMAS AND ASSOCIATE DEGREES.

THIS IS A MOMENTOUS OCCASION THAT MARKS THE CULMINATION OF YOUR HARD WORK, DEDICATION AND PERSEVERANCE.

BE PROUD OF ALL THAT YOUR RECOGNITION THIS EVENING REPRESENTS YOU EARNED IT.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR PERSEVERANCE, YOUR COMMITMENT AND ACHIEVEMENT IN YOUR EDUCATION.

IT TRULY IS THE ONE THING NOBODY CAN EVER TAKE AWAY FROM YOU.

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS DR.

RODRIGUEZ.

WE, WE HAVE A LITTLE MEMENTO FOR YOU TO TAKE WITH YOU AND UM, I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, BUT I DON'T THINK IT'S DRINKABLE.

, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

THANK YOU.

GRACIOUS FATHER, IT IS GOOD TO TAKE TIME TO CELEBRATE THE MILESTONES OF LIFE AS WE HAVE DONE HERE THIS EVENING.

IT HAS BEEN SO WONDERFUL TO APPLAUD AND RECOGNIZE THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF EACH OF THESE GRADUATES WHO MAKE UP THE TECHNICAL COLLEGE CLASS OF 2023.

MAY EACH GRADUATE BE EVER MINDFUL AND THANKFUL FOR EACH PERSON WHO MADE THIS ACHIEVEMENT POSSIBLE.

MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES, TEACHERS, COACHES, GUIDANCE COUNSELORS, ENCOURAGING FRIENDS AND OTHERS.

I WANT TO PRAY A BLESSING OVER EACH OF THESE GRADUATES AS THEY BEGIN THE NEXT CHAPTER THAT FOLLOWS IN THE DAYS AHEAD, AS THESE STUDENTS CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION OR BEGIN NEW JOBS OR START NEW CAREERS OR CONTINUE TO TAKE A NEXT STEP OF SOME KIND, WHATEVER THE NEXT CHAPTER HOLDS.

I PRAY G GRACIOUS FATHER, THAT YOU WOULD BLESS EACH STUDENT HERE THIS EVENING.

I ALSO PRAY THAT EACH OF THESE STUDENTS WILL GET A GLIMPSE OF THEIR OPPORTUNITY TO POSITIVELY IMPACT THIS COMMUNITY THAT NEEDS EAGER MINDS AND HEARTS THAT WANT TO MAKE OUR CITY, OUR STATE, OUR COUNTRY, OUR WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

AND MAY EACH OF THEM KNOW THAT YOU HAVE A PLAN FOR THEM, A PLAN TO PROSPER THEM AND NOT TO HARM THEM.

MAN, THIS IS SO COOL.

LOOK AT THIS.

THIS IS ONE OF OUR CORN SNAKES FROM THE NATURE CENTER AND I KNEW IT WAS UH, GRAVID, SO I BROUGHT IT HOME AND SET IT UP HERE.

YOU NOTICED THIS F*G, THE MOSS IN A CONTAINER IN IT'S LAID IN EGG AND I THINK IT'S PROBABLY GONNA LAY A BUNCH MORE THIS, ASSUME THAT ON THAT EGG A LITTLE BIT.

I DON'T WANT TO DISTURB HER TOO MUCH.

SO WHAT WE'RE GONNA DO IS COME BACK AND SEE IF SHE LAYS MORE.

WOW, THIS IS REALLY COOL.

SO GUYS, I'M BACK AND IT LOOKS LIKE SHE'S LAID FIVE EGGS AND OH MY GOSH, HERE COMES ONE RIGHT NOW.

SO SHE'S ABOUT TO LAY AN EGG AND SHE'S KIND OF HAS CONTRACTIONS AND SHE'S JUST PUSHING THAT EGG OUT OF ONE OF HER OVERDOG.

AND THE OTHER THING YOU NOTICE IS THESE EGGS HAVE A TENDENCY TO ADHERE TOGETHER.

SO THEY STICK TOGETHER WITH KIND OF A CLUE LIKE SUBSTANCE AND THAT KEEPS THE EGGS FROM UM, ROLLING AROUND.

AND IF THEY STAY KIND OF IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION, THEN THE EMBRYO DOESN'T DIE.

WOW.

IT'S A BIG EGG.

YOU NOTICE THEY'RE REALLY SOFT WHEN THEY'RE FIRST LAID, BUT THEN THEY KIND OF, UH, GET A MORE LEATHERY SORT OF OUTSIDE COVERING.

LOOKS LIKE SHE LAID THAT ONE.

WOW.

SO THAT'S SIX EGGS AND IT LOOKS LIKE SHE'S GOT A LOT MORE INSIDE HER.

I'M GONNA BACK OFF AND GIVE HER SOME SPACE.

SO WE'RE BACK.

AND YOU CAN SEE SHE'S DONE LAYING.

IT LOOKS LIKE SHE HAS ABOUT 18 OR SO EGGS.

SHE LOOKS LIKE SHE'S DOING FINE.

THE EGGS LOOK TERRIFIC, BOY, THEY'RE NICE AND WHITE AND PRETTY LEATHERY SHELLS.

SO WE'RE GONNA PUT THESE IN VERMICULITE FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS AND THEY'RE GONNA HATCH INTO CUTE LITTLE EIGHT INCH CORN SNAKE BABIES.

MAN, THIS IS REALLY NEAT.

SO HERE ARE THE EGGS.

I'VE PUT 'EM IN VERMICULITE AND YOU CAN SEE THIS IS SOMETHING THAT'S REAL COMMONLY USED FOR NURSERIES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

I'M GONNA COVER 'EM UP JUST A LITTLE BIT AND THEN I'M GONNA PUT A LID ON THEM AND THIS GOT A COUPLE LITTLE AIR HOLES.

AND THEN I'M GONNA PUT THIS IN A WARM PLACE IN THE GARAGE AND THEN I'M GOING TO COME BACK AND CHECK ON 'EM IN WHILE, IN ABOUT TWO MONTHS.
